Negligible clearance of ultrafine particles retained in healthy and affected human lungs.

Ambient particles are believed to be a specific health hazard, although the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. There are data in the literature indicating fast and substantial systemic uptake of particles from the lung. The present authors have developed an improved method to produce ultrafine particles with more stable radiolabelling and defined particle size range. Fifteen subjects inhaled technetium 99m (99mTc)-labelled carbonaceous particles of 100 nm in size. Radioactivity over the lung was followed for 70 h. The clearance of these ultrafine particles from the lungs and specifically translocation to the circulation was tested. Lung retention for all subjects at 46 h was mean+/-sd 99+/-4.6%. Cumulative leaching of 99mTc activity from the particles was 2.6+/-0.96% at 70 h. The 24-h activity leaching in urine was 1.0+/-0.55%. No evidence of a quantitatively important translocation of 100-nm particles to the systemic circulation from the lungs was found. More research is needed to establish if the approximately 1% cleared activity originates from leached activity or insoluble translocated particles, and whether a few per cent of translocated particles is sufficient to cause harmful effects.

In vitro evaluation of stent patency and in-stent stenoses in 10 metallic stents using MR angiography.

In vitro study to investigate the suitability of contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CEMRA) for determination of stent patency and grading of in-stent stenoses in 10 metallic stents. The Acculink carotid, DynaLink, Easy Wallstent, JostentSelfX XF, Luminexx, Omnilink, sinus-SuperFlex, SMART, Symphony and ZA stent were separately placed in a vascular phantom. Dedicated stenoses inside the stents generated a concentric lumen narrowing of 50%. CEMRA was performed for each stent. Signal loss inside the stents and artificial lumen narrowing were assessed objectively using the evaluation software of the MR imager. Moreover, three blinded observers determined visibility of stent patency and in-stent stenoses subjectively on a 3-point scale and graded in-stent stenoses. Loss of signal intensity within the stent lumen ranged between 90% (Wallstent) and 5% (ZA), artificial lumen narrowing between 56% (Symphony) and 22% (ZA). For the Symphony and Wallstent, visibility of patency and in-stent stenoses was impaired and the observers' grading exaggerated the degree of stenoses (by 23% and 33%, respectively). For the remainder of stents, patency and stenoses were visible and stenoses were graded accurately (less than 10% discrepancy from reference standard). In this in vitro study, eight of 10 stents presented with MRI characteristics which enabled determination of stent patency and accurate grading of clinically relevant in-stent stenoses.

Correlations between motor performance and cognitive functions in children born < 1250 g at school age.

Very low birth weight born children manifest a higher prevalence of motor and cognitive impairments than term children. Seventy-four prospectively enrolled children born < 1250 g underwent testing of motor (Zurich neuromotor assessment ZNA: timed motor performances and associated movements) and cognitive functions (Kaufman-ABC) at age six years. Children with cerebral palsy or mental retardation were excluded. Adaptive motor tasks (pegboard and dynamic balance) and visuomotor cognitive functions were specifically impaired, and a distinct correlation pattern between motor and cognitive abilities was detected. The adaptive fine motor task (pegboard) correlated with visuomotor functions of the Kaufman-ABC ("triangles", r = 0.35; "matrix analogies", r = 0.39), while pure motor tasks of the ZNA (repetitive, alternating, and sequential movements) did not in spite of impaired motor performance. Timed motor performance below the 10th percentile correlated strongly with cognitive delay (IQ < 85: adaptive fine motor: OR 6.0 [95% CI] 4.7-7.3; adaptive gross motor: OR 7.0 [CI 5.6-8.4]; static balance: OR 9.6 [CI 8.2-11.0]). In conclusion, motor deficits in children born < 1250 g without severe disabilities correlate with specific cognitive impairments, in particular of the visuomotor domain. The correlation pattern may indicate specific dysfunction in visuomotor transformation, the intermediate process between visual-perceptual input and motor output. Early assessment of both motor and cognitive functions using standardized assessment tools is important to determine the extent and combination of specific developmental disturbances and to tailor therapeutic intervention.

Immunohistochemical detection of macrophage migration inhibitory factor in fetal and adult bovine epididymis: release by the apocrine secretion mode?

Originally defined as a lymphokine inhibiting the random migration of macrophages, the macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is an important mediator of the host response to infection. Beyond its function as a classical cytokine, MIF is currently portrayed as a multifunctional protein with growth-regulating properties present in organ systems beyond immune cells. In previous studies, we detected substantial amounts of MIF in the rat epididymis and epididymal spermatozoa, where it appears to play a role during post-testicular sperm maturation and the acquisition of fertilization ability. To explore its presence in other species not yet examined in this respect, we extended the range of studies to the bull. Using a polyclonal antibody raised against MIF purified from bovine eye lenses, we detected MIF in the epithelium of the adult bovine epididymis with the basal cells representing a prominently stained cell type. A distinct accumulation of MIF at the apical cell pole of the epithelial cells and in membranous vesicles localized in the lumen of the epididymal duct was obvious. In the fetal bovine epididymis, we also detected MIF in the epithelium, whereas MIF accumulation was evident at the apical cell surface and in apical protrusions. By immunoelectron microscopy of the adult bovine epididymis, we localized MIF in apical protrusions of the epithelial cells and in luminal membrane-bound vesicles that were found in close proximity to sperm cells. Although the precise origin of the MIF-containing vesicles remains to be delineated, our morphological observations support the hypothesis that they become detached from the apical surface of the epididymal epithelial cells. Additionally, an association of MIF with the outer dense fibers of luminal spermatozoa was demonstrated. Data obtained in this study suggest MIF release by an apocrine secretion mode in the bovine epididymis. Furthermore, MIF localized in the basal cells of the epithelium and in the connective tissue could be responsible for regulating the migration of macrophages in order to avoid contact of immune cells with spermatozoa that carry a wide range of potent antigens.

Intra-arterial MR angiography in the iliac system: initial clinical experience with 25 patients.

The aim of this study was to evaluate intra-arterial magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the iliac arteries. Therefore, 25 consecutive patients (17 male, 8 female) suffering from symptomatic occlusive disease of the lower limbs were investigated prospectively. Catheter angiography was performed before MRA and served as the standard of reference. Contrast-enhanced intra-arterial MRA was performed using a 1.5 Tesla MRI system. Contrast agent (gadodiamide) was injected by a conventional pigtail-shaped angiography catheter placed in the abdominal aorta. Vascular lesions were assessed by four investigators. The degree of stenosis was compared with the findings of conventional catheter angiography. Additionally, the diagnostic quality of the MR angiograms was assessed by the investigators using a semi quantitative five-point scale. All lesions shown by catheter angiography were detected and correctly localized by intra-arterial MRA. MR angiograms exhibit a specificity of 95% and a sensitivity of 96% for stenoses of 50% or more. The diagnostic quality of the images was judged from good to excellent, on average. Intra-arterial MRA exhibits a specificity and sensitivity comparable with intravenous angiography. The image quality appears to be adequate for supporting MR-guided vascular intervention.

[Diffusion-weighted imaging in the diagnostic evaluation of the hydrocephalus in patients with acute or chronic increase in cerebral pressure].

PURPOSE: To investigate whether diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides additional information about the periventricular white matter for the assessment of hydrocephalus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen MRI examinations (11 with acutely increased cerebral pressure, 5 without symptoms) on 15 patients with hydrocephalus (4 patients with communicating hydrocephalus and 11 patients with obstructive hydrocephalus) were analyzed. One symptomatic patient subsequently became asymptomatic. We investigated the "apparent diffusion coefficient" (ADC) in the subcortical and periventricular white matter. The ADCs of the study patients were compared with those of a healthy control group. RESULTS: Symptomatic patients with hydrocephalus, 6/11 showed periventricular edema and a significantly higher ADC values in the periventricular region than in the subcortical white matter. 5/11 symptomatic patients showed significantly higher ADC values even in the absence of periventricular interstitial edema (both groups contained patients with communicating and obstructive hydrocephalus). All 5 asymptomatic patients with hydrocephalus did not have a significantly higher ADC values in the periventricular region. CONCLUSION: In patients with hydrocephalus and acutely increased cerebral pressure, DWI showed a significantly higher ADC values in the periventricular region even without visible interstitial edema on conventional MRI sequences.

Detection rate and efficiency of lymph node assessment with axial and coronal image reading based on 16 row multislice CT of the neck.

PURPOSE: Multislice CT (MSCT) has the advantage of isotropic volumetric data acquisition which allows high resolution data reconstruction in the axial and coronal plane. We evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of coronal reconstruction compared to axial reconstructions of a routinely performed CT scan exemplary in neck lymph node assessment performed on a 16 row MSCT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Contrast enhanced neck MSCT of 24 patients with known lymphoma were evaluated prospectively for lymph node assessment. 4 blinded readers evaluated the axial and coronal reconstructions of the same patient. Neck lymph nodes larger than 10 mm were evaluated by their anatomical region (deep jugular chain, submandibular, nuchal). Time for axial and coronal image evaluation was assessed. Detection rate was compared with consensus reading as gold standard. RESULTS: In consensus reading 169 enlarged lymph nodes in the deep jugular chain were found. Detection rate for axial image interpretation was 36.1 % with 54.9 % in coronal reading. Assessing the submandibular lymph nodes (n = 45) axial interpretation revealed 53.9 % with 36.1 % in coronal reading. Evaluation time for axial reading was in all but one reader significantly longer (mean 176 seconds) than in coronal reading (mean 129 seconds). CONCLUSION: Coronal image reading improves the detection rate of cranio-caudal oriented structures. Considering representatively neck lymph nodes in the deep jugular chain the image interpretation time is significantly reduced. Still axial reading remains necessary for assessing axially oriented structures such as the submandibular region in the neck.

Intra-arterial magnetic resonance angiography of the iliac arteries: clinical experience using two different protocols.

PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility of intra-arterial magnetic resonance angiography (iaMRA) with two different protocols. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty patients were prospectively examined after digital subtraction angiography. Contrast-enhanced iaMRA was performed using a 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. Contrast agent (gadodiamide) was injected through a conventional angiography catheter placed in the abdominal aorta. The patients were randomized into two groups each comprising 10 patients. Group 1 was examined with a FLASH-3D (fast low-angle shot) sequence, allowing the center of the k-space to be acquired 0.5 s after initiation of the measurement. Group 2 was examined with the identical sequence, but the center of the k-space was acquired after 8.7 s. The increase in the intravascular signal intensity was determined and the diagnostic value of the angiograms was independently scored by 4 investigators using a 5-point scale. RESULTS: Nineteen of 20 MRAs were scored as diagnostic; only 1 was scored as non-diagnostic by 2 observers. The diagnostic value of the angiograms of group 2 was judged superior to that of group 1 owing to a more homogeneous intravascular contrast distribution. CONCLUSION: Intra-arterial MRA is feasible. The diagnostic value of angiograms using a flash sequence with center of the k-space acquisition after 8.7 s ranged from good to excellent. This sequence is appropriate for iaMRA of iliac arteries to support MR guided intervention.

Comparison of magnetic resonance imaging colonography with conventional colonoscopy for the assessment of intestinal inflammation in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a feasibility study.

AIM: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based colonography represents a new imaging tool which has mainly been investigated for polyp screening. To evaluate this approach for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), we compared MRI based colonography with conventional colonoscopy for assessing the presence and extent of colonic inflammation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 22 consecutive patients with suspected or known IBD, MRI colonography was performed immediately before conventional colonoscopy. After bowel cleansing, a T1 positive contrast agent was applied rectally. In addition to T2 weighted sequences, T1 weighted two dimensional and three dimensional Flash acquisitions as well as volume rendered virtual endoscopy were performed. All images were evaluated with regard to typical MRI features of inflammation. The results were compared with colonoscopy findings. RESULTS: Distension and image quality was assessed as good to fair in 97.4% of all colonic segments. Only four of 154 segments were considered non-diagnostic. With colonoscopy serving as the gold standard, the sensitivity for correctly identifying inflammation on a per segment analysis of the colon was 31.6% for Crohn's disease (CD) and 58.8% for ulcerative colitis (UC). In CD, in most cases mild inflammation was not diagnosed by MRI while in UC even severe inflammation was not always depicted by MRI. Virtual endoscopy did not add any relevant information. CONCLUSION: MRI based colonography is not suitable for adequately assessing the extent of colonic inflammation in patients with IBD. Only severe colonic inflammation in patients with CD can be sufficiently visualised.

[Comparison between three-dimensional electro-anatomical mapping and conventional mapping in the ablation of atrial tachycardias].

In atrial tachycardias, catheter ablation using conventional mapping system is associated with high immediate success and low recurrence. Three-dimensional electroanatomical mapping system combined to catheter ablation of atrial tachycardias has reached, in small uncontroled series, success rates of 100%. However, limited data are available about rates of recurrence or complication using this approach. In order to compare both mapping systems, we have conducted a study of 65 consecutive patients (36 women and 29 men) that underwent both electrophysiologic study and catheter ablation for suspected atrial tachycardias. Pre-existing heart disease was noted in 43%, hypertension in 32% and a history of atrial fibrillation of flutter in 52%. Catheter ablation guided by conventional mapping was undertaken in 44 patients and by three-dimensional electroanatomical mapping in 21. Successful ablation was performed in 68% of patients with conventional mapping and in 90% with three-dimensional electroanatomical mapping. No complication and recurrence were observed with the latter approach, while 5 patients had a recurrence and 2 had immediate complication with conventional mapping. Catheter ablation of atrial tachycardias combined with three-dimensional electroanatomical mapping appeared to be effective and safe, however, conventional mapping system still remains a reliable approach that must be considered as the first choice for atrial tachycardias ablation.

Degenerative diseases of the cervical spine: comparison of a multiecho data image combination sequence with a magnetisation transfer saturation pulse and cervical myelography and CT.

Assessing degenerative disease in the cervical spine remains a challenge. There is much controversy about imaging the cervical spine using MRI. Our aim in this prospective study was to compare a T2*-weighted 2D spoiled gradient-echo multiecho sequence (MEDIC) with a magnetisation transfer saturation pulse with cervical myelography and postmyelographic CT. Using an assessment scale we looked at the vertebral bodies, intervertebral discs, neural foramina, anterior and posterior nerve roots, grey matter, ligamentaflava, oedema in the spinal cord and stenosis of the spinal canal. We also evaluated postmyelography CT and the MEDIC sequence for assessing narrowing of the neural foramina in a cadaver cervical spine. We examined 67 disc levels in 18 patients, showing 18 disc prolapses and 21 osteophytes narrowing the spinal canal or the neural foramina. All MRI studies showed these abnormalities findings equally well. Postmyelography CT was significantly better for showing the bony structures and the anterior and posterior nerve roots. The MEDIC sequence provided excellent demonstration of soft-tissue structures such as the intervertebral disc and ligamentum flavum. No statistical differences between the imaging modalities were found in the assessment of narrowing of the neural foramina or the extent of spinal stenosis. The cadaver measurements showed no overestimation of abnormalities using the MEDIC sequence.

Feasibility of MR-guided angioplasty of femoral artery stenoses using real-time imaging and intraarterial contrast-enhanced MR angiography.

PURPOSE: To show the feasibility of magnetic resonance (MR) for guided interventional therapy of femoral and popliteal artery stenoses with commercially available materials supported by MR real-time imaging and intraarterial MR angiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three patients (1 female, 2male), suffering from symptomatic arterial occlusive disease with stenoses of the femoral (n = 2) or popliteal (n = 1) arteries were included. Intraarterial digital subtraction angiography was performed in each patient pre- and post-interventionally as standard of reference to quantify stenoses. The degree of the stenoses reached from 71 - 88 %. The MR images were acquired on a 1.5 T MR scanner (Magnetom Sonata; Siemens, Erlangen, Germany). For MR-angiography, a Flash 3D sequence was utilized following injection of 5 mL diluted gadodiamide (Omniscan; Amersham Buchler, Braunschweig, Germany) via the arterial access. Two maximum intensity projections (MIP) were used as road maps and localizer for the interactive positioning of a continuously running 2D-FLASH sequence with a temporal solution of 2 images per second. During the intervention, an MR compatible monitor provided the image display inside the scanner room. Safety guidelines were followed during imaging in the presence of a conductive guidewire. The lesion was crossed by a commercially available balloon catheter (Wanda, Boston Scientific; Ratingen, Germany), which was mounted on a 0.035" guidewire (Terumo; Leuven, Belgium). The visibility was provided by radiopaque markers embedded in the balloon and was improved by injection of 1 mL gadodiamide into the balloon. After dilation, the result was checked by intraarterial MR angiography and catheter angiography. RESULTS: The stenoses could be correctly localized by intraarterial MR angiography. There was complete correlation between intraarterial MR angiography and digital subtraction angiography. The combination of guidewire and balloon was visible and the balloon was placed correctly to cover the entire stenoses. Balloon dilation reduced the degree of stenosis about 45 % on average. A prolonged dilation was necessary in one patient due to a relevant residual stenosis, which was recognized by intraarterial MR angiography. CONCLUSION: MR-guided balloon dilatation of femoral and popliteal artery stenoses supported by real time imaging and intraarterial MR angiography is feasible with commercially available materials in the above mentioned way.

Degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine. Comparison of the multiecho data image combination sequence with magnetization transfer saturation pulse versus lumbar myelography/postmyelographic computed tomography.

PURPOSE: To compare a T2* weighted 2D spoiled gradient echo multiecho sequence (MEDIC) with magnetization transfer saturation pulse versus lumbar myelography and postmyelographic computed tomography (pCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 84 disk levels in 27 patients were examined. The vertebral bodies, intervertebral disks, neural foramina, cauda equina, ligamentum flavum, and narrowing of the spinal canal were investigated using an evaluation scale. In addition, the pCT and the MEDIC sequence were evaluated for assessing the narrowing of the neural foramina in a phantom study using a cadaver preparation of the lumbar spine. RESULTS: A total of 28 disk herniations, 11 cases of osteophytes narrowing the spinal canal or the neural foramina, and 7 spinal canal stenoses were detected. The pCT was significantly better in visualizing the cauda equina. The MEDIC sequence was significantly superior in visualizing the extension of the ligamentum flavum. No statistical differences between either image modality were found concerning assessment of the narrowing of the neural foramina and the spinal canal, nor regarding evaluation of the vertebral disk and the vertebral body. Measurements of the phantom study showed that the MEDIC sequence did not overestimate narrowing of the neural foramina. CONCLUSIONS: The T2* MEDIC sequence has proved to be as accurate as pCT in evaluating osteophytes and narrowing of the neural foramina. In doubtful standard magnetic resonance imaging findings, this means that an additional axial T2* MEDIC sequence may be of value in reaching the same accuracy as pCT.

Long-term clearance kinetics of inhaled ultrafine insoluble iridium particles from the rat lung, including transient translocation into secondary organs.

Recently it was speculated that ultrafine particles (UFP) may translocate from deposition sites in the lungs to systemic circulation and whether long-term clearance differs between ultrafine and micrometer-sized particles. We have studied lung retention and clearance kinetics in 12 healthy male adult WKY rats up to 6 mo after an inhalation of (192)Ir-radiolabeled, insoluble, ultrafine 15- to 20-nm iridium particles. Whole-body retention was followed by external gamma counting, and particle clearance kinetics were determined by excretion radioanalysis. Four rats each were sacrificed after 3 wk and 2 and 6 mo; all organs as well as tissues and the carcass were radioanalyzed to balance the entire deposited radioactivity of the particles. The most prominent fraction was retained in the lungs at each time point of sacrifice (26%, 15%, 6%, respectively), and clearance out of the body was solely via excretion. Extrapulmonary particle uptake did not continue to increase but decreased with time in liver, spleen, heart, and brain when compared to previous data obtained during the first 7 days after inhalation (Kreyling et al., 2002). UFP long-term lung retention derived from whole-body measurements was comparable to previously reported data using insoluble micrometer-sized particles (Bellmann et al., 1994; Lehnert et al., 1989). In addition, differential analysis including daily excretion data revealed a pattern of fractional particle clearance rate of the ultrafine iridium particles similar to that of micrometer-sized particles reported by Snipes et al. (1983) and Bailey et al. (1985).

[Evaluation of radiological teaching programs in the Internet].

PURPOSE: Evaluation of web based training programs, which can be contacted from the homepages of radiological departments of German universities. MATERIAL AND METHOD: From June 2000 to January 2002 the 75 web based training programs of 57 providers, which can be contacted from the web pages of the radiological departments of German universities were evaluated in a prospective study. A medical student experienced in using the world wide web examined each training program three times in an interval of six months using the following criteria: availability of the web sites, target group, kind of training program, contents and structure and the technical solution. RESULTS: 51 of the 57 the homepages were fully available at each visit. 64 of the 75 web based training programs which could be connected from these sites were available at all three visits. One program was only partially available at one spot check. 8 of the 75 programs were designed for physicians and medically trained personal, 23 were made for medical students and 44 addressed both target groups (partially more than once mentioned). The number of the presented cases ranged between one single and 3700. In 31 of 75 training programs links to other teaching files were found. A complete presentation of cases was presented by 48 of the 75 web sites.5 of the 75 web sites offered physiological images for comparison. In 20 training programs the pathological changes were optically marked in the x-ray images. A logical and didactical structure was found in 24 teaching files, 14 gave the possibility to check the learning results. No provider made use of the possibility to pass credits to the students or physicians account with regard to official training programs. Multimedia techniques were used in 15 training programs.43 sites used data reduced preview images (thumbnails). The latest update of the site is mentioned in 55 of the 75 web sites. 19 of 57 providers had either no possibility of contact or did not answer to an e-mail. CONCLUSION: From the homepages of the departments of diagnostic radiology of German universities 75 teaching files can be contacted. There is a great variety in quantity and quality. Most sites offer collections of cases. A web based training program which is comparable in quality to a CD-ROM teaching program could not be found. No program used the possibility to give credits to the users with regard to official training programs.

Establishing of two in vitro models of epithelial cells from the apocrine secreting rat coagulating gland.

Apocrine secretion is an alternative export pathway for proteins and was described especially for accessory sex glands of rodents and men. This mechanism is not as well characterized as the classical merocrine (eccrine) export. In the rat coagulating gland both secretion modes were observed, and several proteins were identified to be released by these two pathways. To obtain more data on the apocrine secretion mode, we established two culture models of the rat coagulating gland: primary epithelial cells and an organ culture system. The in vitro models were characterized with immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy and RT-PCR. The polarity of primary and passaged epithelial cells (passage 8) was proven by the detection of occludin, E-cadherin and beta-actin. The gland tissue pieces showed good maintenance after 1-week culture. Finally we demonstrated that the epithelial cells of both culture models are still expressing and producing apocrine and merocrine proteins. Using these two culture models for the rat coagulating gland, it is now possible to initiate studies on the apocrine secretion mechanism in vitro.

[Aptitude statements after head injury].

In an exemplary way the case study of M. S. shows that the statements concerning aptitude, which are based on intelligence structure tests, lead to false positive judgements under certain preconditions. Particularly if you postulate learning disorder and partial amnesia, the standard status diagnosis via intelligence and achievement tests has to be supplemented by a method of testing by which the dynamics of cognitive processes can be recorded. In the individual case study of M. S., learning disorder and partial amnesia have been disclosed via the dynamic learning test by Seitz (1998). They did not become manifest when only the routine diagnostic methods were applied. Against the background of socio-legal implications of the specific case some demands on psychological diagnosis and valuation are being discussed from the practician's point of view. They subsequently lead to certain demands concerning academic research. This applies above all to the dynamic learning test which is described above. It states as a result a linear relationship between the effort put into learning and the quantity of learning (the slope is interpreted as an individual constant). The dynamic learning test is also likely to be interesting in respect to pure research in general psychology and the formation of theories.

Expression of peroxisomal proteins provides clear evidence for the presence of peroxisomes in the male germ cell line GC1spg.

Peroxisomes are cell organelles that perform multiple functions in the metabolism of lipids and of reactive oxygen species. They are present in most eukaryotic cells. However, they are believed to be absent in spermatozoa and they have never been described in male germ cells. We have used the immortalized germ cell line GC1spg to investigate the expression of peroxisomal proteins in germ cells of mice. The GC1spg cells represent the differentiation state of type B spermatogonia or preleptotene spermatocytes. We could show that peroxisomal membrane proteins like Pmp70 and Pex14p as well as peroxisomal matrix proteins like catalase or acyl CoA oxidase are expressed in GC1spg cells. All these proteins were colocalized in the same structures within the cells. Furthermore, by electron microscopy we have identified subcellular particles with an ultrastructural appearance that is characteristic of peroxisomes. This is the first report demonstrating the peroxisomal compartment in male germ cells of mice.
