Syphilis and gonorrhea; epidemiology update.

The epidemiologic patterns of venereal diseases (VD) in Greece were studied using data from the National Statistical Service, the University Hospital for VD and the special clinic for VD of the Ministry of Health, where prostitutes and homosexuals are examined. The main findings are as follows. Between 1962 and 1976 the frequency of both syphilis and gonorrhea declined among men as well as among women but the decline was more evident among women and among the older age groups (20+). Among men, the highest incidence is the age group 20-29 years, whereas among women the peak incidence is a little earlier. The rates for both syphilis and gonorrhea are higher in men than in women, higher in the greater Athens area than in the rest of Greece, and higher in single persons than in married one. There was a marked seasonal variation of VD with peak incidence at late summer. The decline of VD was also evident among prostitutes and male homosexuals with the exception of syphilis among uncontrolled prostitutes (increase) and male homosexuals (slight decrease).

Antigenic alterations in tumors of epidermal origin.

One hundred tumors of epidermal origin were studied by means of indirect immunofluorescence technique with sera from patients with proven pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid. We found that in tumors of epidermal origin, there was a loss of antigenicity of the intercellular substance and basement membrane; this was minimal for benign tumors, greater for premalignant tumors, and very clear for malignant tumors. We also found a gross correlation between the histologically proven malignancy of squamous cell carcinoma and the grade of antigenic loss; both for the intercellular substances and for the basement membrane antigens. However, this did not yeild definite results in the group with basal cell carcinoma. With regard, especially, to the intercellular substance antigen, it seemed to be completely independent of histologic type of basal cell carcinoma. We found that the duration of the epidermal tumor did not correlate with the percentage of intercellular substance and basement membrane antigenic loss. This suggested that the antigenic loss was an early feature of neoplastic behavior. The deeper parts of the malignant tumors in the dermis showed a lower percentage of antigenicity for both antigens.

Epidemiology of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Greece.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a disease endemic in Greece. Cases collected between the years 1975 and 1979 are analyzed from a clinico-epidemiologic point of view. Prevalence is highest in the Ionian islands and Crete. The disease most commonly affects individuals 10 to 20 years of age. The exposed parts of the body are most commonly involved, particularly the face. The period of highest incidence is mid-winter.

Immunohistochemical study on 70 human embryos concerning the epidermal binding of pemphigus and pemphigoid antibodies.

In the present study, the development of pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid antigens was investigated by means of the indirect immunofluorescence technique using sera of pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid patients, respectively, on human foetus skin antigenic substrate. Seventy skin specimens from embryos of 9-38 weeks of gestation were studied. Both pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid antigens were observed for the first time at about 16 weeks of gestation. Pemphigus antigen has a slower rate of evolution. Between 30 and 38 weeks both antigens were detected as strongly positive.

Thin-layer chromatography of phospholipid components of normal and psoriatic epidermis.

The phospholipid pattern of human epidermis from 23 psoriatic patients and from 14 healthy individuals has been determined using lipid thin-layer chromatography. An increased amount of total phospholipids and statistically significant differences in some phospholipid components were found in psoriatic patients as compared to healthy controls. These abnormalities may be related to the altered architecture of the plasma membranes and their surface coats observed in psoriatic keratinocytes.

[Pityriasis versicolor in Greece and its predisposition factors].

The age and seasonal incidence of 2610 patients with pityriasis versicolor in Greece were studied. Determination of the pH of Na and K ions of the sweat and the microbiol flora of the skin of pityriasis versicolor patients was undertaken. Besides these the effectiveness of a 1% selenium disulfid suspension was tested. The results indicate that the age groups of 20-29 and 30-30 years are mostly affected by the disease. A high incidence of the skin manifestation was noted during the summer and fall months. A difference of the pH of the sweat between pityriasis versicolor and healthy controls was observed, but no difference was found in the Na and K ions of the sweat among these two groups. Neither did the microbial flora from the skin lesions of patients and from corresponding sites of controls show any difference. The high relapse in this experiment indicates the relative ineffectiveness of selenium disulfid preparations when used as a 1% suspension in the treatment of pityriasis versicolor.

[Acquired ichthyosis as a cutaneous symptom of Hodgkin's disease. Paraneoplastic syndrome].

A case-report of a patient with acquired ichthyosis is given. The symptoms of the main disease-ascites, heavy edema, cachexia and general dissolution-became manifest at the same time as the cutaneous manifestations. The histological examination of a neck lymph node showed metastases of a carcinoma of the gastrointestinal tract. The autopsy resulted in the diagnosis M. Hodgkin. The dermatosis (ichthyosis) is explained as cutaneous pareneoplastic syndrome. The pathogenesis of the disease and the possible role of A-vitaminosis resp. disturbance of vit. A metabolism in the manifestation of the cutaneous manifestations is discussed.

Ichthyosis hystrix of 'porcupine man' type. Report of a case.

Ichthyosis hystrix is a term used to describe an ichthyosiform dermatosis in which formation of hyperkeratotic, verrucose excrescences is a prominent clinical feature. This paper deals with an interesting case of ichthosis hystrix associated with a negative family history and two squamous cell epitheliomas.

Seasonal influence on patch test results in Greece.

Several studies have been reported on the suppressive effect of ultraviolet B (UVB), UVA sunlight and PUVA on contact dermatitis. However, studies that have tested the hypothesis that patch tests reactions have a seasonal variation due to the suppressive influence of sunlight, had found conflicting results. In order to clarify the influence of climate conditions in Athens, Greece (sunlight, temperature, latitude 38 degrees) on patch tests results, data from 5468 patch-tested patients (1978-1990) were analyzed for monthly, seasonal variation. In addition, 180 patients with a high degree of sun exposure due to occupation that were prospectively re-patch-tested in a different season (i.e. summer versus winter), with the same allergens and technique, were studied and analyzed statistically. Climate data was provided by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service. The results indicate that there is no significant influence on patch tests reactions in Athens, Greece. This may in part be due to the small differences in climate conditions that exist between summer and winter in Greece.
