Reproductive failure associated with cystic rete ovarii in guinea pigs.

Cystic ovaries were found at necropsy in 54 of 71 (76%) female guinea pigs between 18 and 60 months of age. Histologic appearance and location of the cysts within the ovary were consistent with cystic rete ovarii. Microscopic appearance of the large ovarian cysts suggested reproductive performance in these guinea pigs should be compromised. Breeding records indicated that fertility was markedly reduced in affected females over fifteen months of age. Cystic endometrial hyperplasia, mucometra, endometritis in appropriate placental tissue, or fibroleiomyomas were seen in 21 of 54 (39%) guinea pigs with cystic ovaries, but in only one of 17 (6%) guinea pigs without cystic ovaries.

Vitamin E and selenium status of guinea pigs with myocardial necrosis.

Myocardial necrosis and mineralization has been identified in a colony of guinea pigs which were subsequently tested for vitamin E and selenium deficiency. Serum vitamin E and whole blood selenium levels were within normal ranges. The erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase test has potential as a predictor of whole blood selenium levels in the guinea pig. The red blood cell hemolysis test used in this study did not correlate consistently with the serum vitamin E levels. We suspect that myocardial necrosis and mineralization may have resulted from inbreeding guinea pigs within the closed colony.

Nutritional deficiency anemias in nonhuman primates.

The purpose of this report is to review past studies in which anemias, occurred spontaneously in nonhuman primates due to feeding inadequate diets or were induced by feeding diets deficient in a nutrient. Included is a review of anemias induced by deficiencies of iron, niacin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid, protein, riboflavin, cyanocobalamin, folic acid, ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol. The anemia induced by deficiency of each nutrient is discussed with emphasis on the major clinical signs as well as peripheral blood and bone marrow pathology. Results of supplementation of the diet following induction of deficiency states are discussed also. Whenever applicable, a discussion is included of the use of nonhuman primates as animal models for studies simulating parallel nutritional deficiencies in man.

Adverse effect of a sucrose-based semipurified diet on development and postnatal growth of Fischer rats.

A commercially prepared semipurified diet (Bio-Serve No. 0006Q) composed of chemically defined ingredients was fed to male and female F344 rats before mating, to females during gestation, and to the offspring after weaning. Compared to rats treated similarly but fed a standard, cereal-based chow (Agway CR RMH 3000), offspring on the semipurified diet exhibited markedly retarded growth. At 12 weeks of age, the deficits in body weight were accompanied by decreased absolute organ weights, increased organ-to-body weight ratios, increased serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and development of hepatic periportal lipidosis in both male and female offspring on the semipurified diet. The deficits in body weight are explained, in part, by decreased intake of the semipurified diet, most likely attributable to its high sucrose content. Investigators are cautioned about the inadequacy of certain semipurified diets for development and postnatal growth of F344 rats.

Intraarterial ethanol as a long-term occlusive agent in renal, hepatic, and gastrosplenic arteries of pigs.

The renal, hepatic, or gastrosplenic arteries of eleven juvenile pigs were selectively injected intraarterially with 95% ethanol to evaluate its efficacy as an agent for use in permanent occlusion and infarction of the vascular bed supplied by the injected artery. A dose of 2.2 cc/5 kg (1 cc/5 lb) of 95% ethanol was injected over 30-45 sec. The animals were then killed at 1 to 91 days and all pigs demonstrated tissue infarction and vascular occlusion. Our results confirm that ethanol is an effective agent for the infarction of organs and that complications can result if catheter placement is not precise and normal tissue is inadvertently perfused.

Acute meningoencephalomyelitis in a rabbit infected with Pasteurella multocida.

Pasteurella multocida was isolated in pure culture from the optic chiasm of a rabbit that was euthanatized subsequent to acute development of neurological signs. Histopathologically, there was meningoencephalomyelitis, bilateral otitis interna, retrobulbar cellulitis, optic neuritis and iritis. The ocular involvement, severity of the spinal lesions and the lack of otitis media was unusual.

Spontaneous Pasteurella pneumonia in adult laboratory goats complicated by superinfection with Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis and Muellerius capillaris.

Three cases of Pasteurella pneumonia in laboratory goats were diagnosed during a 21 month period. Two goats died acutely and a third was euthanized after four weeks of unsuccessful therapy. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the lung lesions of all three goats. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis and Muellerius capillaris also were present in the lungs of the third goat. Pasteurella infections were associated with fibrino-hemorrhagic-necrotizing pleuritis and pneumonia, while lungs superinfected with Corynebacterium also contained microabcesses. The gross and histologic lesions are described and diagnosis, treatment and prevention are discussed.

Student-instructor relationships in nursing education.

The nursing instructor who assumes a colleagial or facilitator role in the student-instructor helping relationship assists students to learn and develop both personal and professional competence. In an attempt to attain power, female faculty members may exert power over students, causing students to feel threatened, powerless, and incompetent. Research studies indicate that there is a direct correlation between a student's self-concept and academic performance. When an instructor manifests open communication with students and demonstrates an interest in their learning, the instructor may facilitate a positive self-concept in students and enhance their cognitive abilities. Nursing practice is based on utilizing therapeutic communication, which is authentic, open, and personal. Students may acquire these skills and simultaneously increase their competence in nursing practice more readily when faculty members serve as role models in a helping relationship through sharing and developing trust. By applying the principles of the helping relationship, nursing instructors may facilitate students' personal and professional growth.
