Detection of multiple-quantum coherences with projective nuclear magnetic resonance measurement.

It is shown that in nuclear magnetic resonance, multiple-quantum (MQ) coherences can be detected "instantly" by exploiting the principle of quantum-mechanical projective measurement. Therefore, the mixing period, which involves collective multispin dynamics and converts MQ coherences into observable single-quantum coherence (magnetization), is not necessary. The experimental examples are given for two finite clusters: benzene in liquid crystal and liquid crystal 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl, and for solid adamantane with an infinite network of dipolar couplings.

DNA-induced size-selective separation of mixtures of gold nanoparticles.

We present a novel method for size-selectively separating mixtures of nanoparticles in aqueous media utilizing the inherent chemical recognition properties of DNA and the cooperative binding properties of DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticles. We have determined that the melting temperatures (T(m)s) of aggregates formed from nanoparticles interconnected by duplex DNA are dependent upon particle size. This effect is proposed to derive from larger contact areas between the larger particles and therefore increased cooperativity, leading to higher T(m)s. The separation protocol involves taking two aliquots of a mixture of particles that vary in size and functionalizing them with complementary DNA. These aliquots are mixed at a temperature above the T(m) for aggregates formed from the smaller particles but below the T(m) for aggregates formed from the larger particles. Therefore, the aggregates that form consist almost exclusively of the larger particles and can be easily separated by sedimentation and centrifugation from the smaller dispersed particles. This unusual size-dependent behavior and separation protocol are demonstrated for three binary mixtures of particles and one ternary mixture.

Multiplexed detection of protein cancer markers with biobarcoded nanoparticle probes.

We have developed the chemistry for preparing a universal probe and the appropriate nano- and microparticle labels that can be used to do highly selective multiplexed detection of three protein cancer markers at low-femtomolar concentration in buffer and serum media. The approach relies on a new multiplexed version of the biobarcode amplification method and offers new opportunities for studying multiple protein markers in a single sample. This could lead to new forms of disease diagnosis and monitoring disease recurrence in a variety of settings.

Structures of DNA-linked nanoparticle aggregates.

The room-temperature structure of DNA-linked gold nanoparticle aggregates is investigated using a combination of experiment and theory. The experiments involve extinction spectroscopy measurements and dynamic light scattering measurements of aggregates made using 60 and 80 nm gold particles and 30 base-pair DNA. The theoretical studies use calculated spectra for models of the aggregate structures to determine which structure matches the observations. These models include diffusion-limited cluster-cluster aggregation (DLCA), reaction-limited cluster-cluster aggregation (RLCA), and compact (nonfractal) cluster aggregation. The diameter of the nanoparticles used in the experiments is larger than has been considered previously, and this provides greater sensitivity of spectra to aggregate structure. We show that the best match between experiment and theory occurs for the RLCA fractal structures. This indicates that DNA hybridization takes place under irreversible conditions in the room-temperature aggregation. Some possible structural variations which might influence the result are considered, including the edge-to-edge distance between nanoparticles, variation in the diameter of the nanoparticles, underlying lattice structures of on-lattice compact clusters, and positional disorders in the lattice structures. We find that these variations do not change the conclusion that the room-temperature structure of the aggregates is fractal. We also examine the variation in extinction at 260 nm as temperature is increased, showing that the decrease in extinction at temperatures below the melting temperature is related to a morphological change from fractal toward compact structures.

Accurate measurement of 13C-15N distances with solid-state NMR.

Solid-state NMR technique for measuring distances between heteronuclei in static powder samples is described. It is based on a two-dimensional single-echo scheme enhanced with adiabatic cross polarization. As an example, the results for intramolecular distances in alpha-crystalline form of glycine are presented. The measured NMR distances (13)C(alpha)-(15)N and (13)C(')-(15)N are 1.496+/-0.002 and 2.50+/-0.02 A, respectively.

Three-layer composite magnetic nanoparticle probes for DNA.

A method for synthesizing composite nanoparticles with a gold shell, an Fe3O4 inner shell, and a silica core has been developed. The approach utilizes positively charged amino-modified SiO2 particles as templates for the assembly of negatively charged 15 nm superparamagnetic water-soluble Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The SiO2-Fe3O4 particles electrostatically attract 1-3 nm Au nanoparticle seeds that act in a subsequent step as nucleation sites for the formation of a continuous gold shell around the SiO2-Fe3O4 particles upon HAuCl4 reduction. The three-layer magnetic nanoparticles, when functionalized with oligonucleotides, exhibit the surface chemistry, optical properties, and cooperative DNA binding properties of gold nanoparticle probes, but the magnetic properties of the Fe3O4 inner shell.

Experimental demonstration of quantum state expansion in a cluster of dipolar-coupled nuclear spins.

It is experimentally demonstrated that an arbitrary quantum state of a single spin 1/2, a| upward arrow+b| downward arrow, can be converted into a superposition of the two ferromagnetic states of a spin cluster: a| upward arrow upward arrow... upward arrow upward arrow+b| downward arrow downward arrow... downward arrow downward arrow. The physical system is a cluster of seven dipolar-coupled nuclear spins of single-labeled 13C-benzene molecules in a liquid-crystalline matrix. In this complex system, the pseudopure ground state and the required controlled unitary transformations have been implemented. The experimental scheme can be considered as an explicit model of quantum measurement.

Pseudopure state of a twelve-spin system.

Pseudopure states of a system of twelve interacting spins are experimentally demonstrated. The system is a cluster of dipolar-coupled nuclear spins of fully labeled (13)C(6)-benzene in a liquid crystalline matrix. At present, this is the largest and the most complex composite system where individual quantum states have been addressed.

Adiabatic cross-polarization via intermediate dipolar-ordered state.

It is experimentally demonstrated that an adiabatic demagnetization-remagnetization in the laboratory frame, where the Zeeman order of abundant nuclei is first adiabatically converted into the dipolar order, and then, into the Zeeman order of rare nuclei, can significantly increase polarization of rare nuclei compared to the conventional cross-polarization technique.

Quantum amplifier: measurement with entangled spins.

It is experimentally demonstrated that entangled quantum states can be used to amplify perturbations and to increase changes in observable values. The physical system is seven nuclear spins of single-labeled (13)C-benzene in a liquid crystalline matrix. An entangled state of six proton spins was used to monitor interaction with the (13)C spin.

Experimental demonstration of a programmable quantum computer by NMR.

A programmable quantum computer is experimentally demonstrated by nuclear magnetic resonance using one qubit for the program and two qubits for data. A non-separable two-qubit operation is performed in a programmable way to show the successful demonstration. Projective measurements required in the programmable quantum computer are simulated by averaging the results of experiments just like when producing an effective pure state.

Synthesis of mesoporous silicas of controlled pore wall thickness and their replication to ordered nanoporous carbons with various pore diameters.

A synthesis strategy for the systematic control of the pore wall thickness has been developed for the mesoporous silicas with 2-D hexagonal order using ionic and nonionic surfactant mixtures. The mesoporous silicas have been used as templates for the synthesis of 2-D hexagonally ordered mesoporous carbons with controlled pore diameters. The synthesis strategy and results are useful not only for tailoring the properties of the mesoporous materials but also for extending our insights into the synthesis mechanism.
