[HCV antibodies in selected patient groups and blood donors].

In a multicenter study in three eastern German blood banks, we searched for HCV antibodies in polytransfused patients, unpaid donors, hemodialysis patients and hemophiliacs. The high seropositivity of HCV antibodies in polytransfused patients shows the danger of the transmission of HCV through the transfusion of blood. Therefore, blood banks should consider making HCV antibody screening of the blood of donors a part of the policy to reduce NANB PTH.

[Antibodies to cytomegaloviruses in blood donors].

The use of seronegative blood products is important to prevent transfusion-associated cytomegalovirus infection in immunocompromised patients. We have screened 3,458 normal blood donors for CMV-IgG-antibodies with an ELISA to receive a panel of seronegative donors and to determine the antibody prevalence. 1,948 donors were seropositive. Female donors had higher antibody prevalence than males in each age range tested.

[Detection of IgA defects in blood donors using an enzyme immunoassay].

An enzyme immunoassay is presented for screening blood donors for IgA-defects using horseradish peroxidase conjugated IgA. Fife of about 4,700 screened donors was found to be IgA-deficient. With another EIA using horseradish peroxidase conjugated monoclonal anti-IgA and IgA coated microplates the IgA-concentration in serum of these selected donors was determined.

[Detection of anti-IgA antibodies using enzyme immunoassay].

An enzyme immunoassay is described for the detection of anti-IgA-antibodies in human serum. The principle is based on the binding of the antibodies to IgA-coated polystyrene tubes and their following reaction with peroxidase conjugated Fc-specific anti-human-IgG.

[Demonstration of circulating immune complexes using a C1q-solid phase enzyme immunoassay].

An enzyme-immunoassay for the quantitative determination of circulating immune complexes in human serum is described. The technique uses alkaline phosphatase-conjugated anti-human IgG to detect immune complexes bound to solid phase C1q. This assay is sensitive detecting 4 ng/ml to 60 micrograms/ml aggregated IgG. First data from normal individuals and patients with systemic lupus erythematosus show that this method is specific and sensitive for detection of circulating immune complexes.
