[Immunological disorders in vitamin A and B1 deficiencies].

Atrophy of the thymus, mitogen-induced inhibition of T-lymphocyte blast-transformation, and decrease of the humoral immune response were observed in rats with alimentary vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin B1 deficiency induced by administration of oxythiamine led to the thymus atrophy, inhibition of T-lymphocyte blastogenic response in mice, and to suppression of delayed hypersensitivity in guinea pigs.

[Activity of lysosomal hydrolases in the rat liver, spleen and thymus during antigenic stimulation and vitamin A administration].

Total activity of cathepsins A, B, C, D as well as of arylsulfatases A and B were studied in liver, spleen, thymus tissues of rats after peroral administration of vitamin A at a daily dose of 30,000 IU within 3 days and the following immunization with sheep erythrocytes. Under conditions of immunization with T-dependent antigen the immunostimulating effect of vitamin A was accompanied by the distinct activation of lysosomal proteinases in liver and spleen tissues but did not affect the functional state of thymocyte lysosomal apparatus. The reaction of lysosomal hydrolases observed was considered as one of biochemical steps in development of humoral immunity.

[Vitamin A: effect on phagocytosis and neutrophil bactericidal systems under normal conditions and in various pathological states].

Effect of vitamin A on phagocytic activity and the state of bactericide system involving myeloperoxidase and cationic proteins was studied in neutrophils from peripheric blood of volunteers and of the patients with chronic pneumonia and lung cancer. Vitamin A was administered per os within 1 week at a daily dose of 500,000 IU. In healthy persons vitamin A, not affecting the ability of neutrophils to capture and lyse microbes, activated myeloperoxidase and increased the cationic proteins content. Under conditions of lung cancer the vitamin did not alter any patterns of phagocytosis studied. Vitamin A did not affect the capture and lysis of microbes in chronic pneumonia but increased distinctly the myeloperoxidase activity in neutrophils, impaired during the disease, and normalized partially the content of cationic proteins.

[Effect of vitamin E on T and B lymphocyte numbers in the peripheral blood and various indicators of nonspecific immunity].

It has been shown in experiments on mice, guinea-pigs and rabbits that additional administration to the animals of vitamin E provokes an increase in the content of T lymphocytes in the peripheral blood without exerting any effect on the content of B lymphocytes. Such an addition also markedly stimulates natural killers of spleen lymphocytes. The complementary, lysozyme and nonspecific bactericidal activity of blood serum remains unchanged in this case.

[Further study of the role of vitamin A in immunologic reactions (observations in volunteers)].

Studies made on volunteers who received vitamin A for a week have demonstrated that the content of peripheral blood lymphocytes increased, which was followed by a relative and absolute increase in the content of B lymphocytes and a rise in the number of T cells in the peripheral blood. An increase in the complementary activity of the blood serum and an increase in IgA content in it were also recorded. After a month the majority of the parameters under study returned to normal.

[Effect of vitamin A on immunogenesis].

Experiments made on mice, rats and rabbits have shown that administration of vitamin A promotes an increase in the weight of the lymphoid organs, thymus and spleen and stimulates production of the antibody-forming cells by the spleen, as well as that of serum antibodies during immunization with different antigens: sheep red blood cells, influenza virus, tetanus and staphylococcal toxoids. The possible mechanisms that underlie vitamin A action are discussed.

[Ascorbic acid content in the blood serum and lymphoid organs in antigenic exposure].

Seven and 14 days following immunization with sheep red blood cells, the guinea-pigs incapable of synthesizing ascorbic acid showed its pronounced decrease in blood serum accompanied by elevation of ascorbate content in the thymus and spleen, central organs responsible for immunogenesis. Immunization of rats capable of synthesizing ascorbic acid did not lead to its changes in the blood serum, thymus or spleen.

[Specific and nonspecific immunity indices in a varying vitamin E allowance in rats].

Vitamin E deficiency within 1.5 and 3 months did not cause in rats any significant immunological impairments in natural and specific immunity. At the same time, after additional administration of vitamin E into rats at a dose of 100 IU within 3 days, the mass of thymus was increased, blasttransformation activity of lymphocytes was stimulated as well as an increase in titres of normal Vi-antibodies and activation of lysosomal enzymes in blood serum were also detected.

Animals↗

[Activity of certain mechanisms of natural immunity in white rats provided with different amounts of vitamin D].

In rats with D avitaminosis some mechanisms of natural immunity were shown to be unaltered (complement, unspecific bactericidal activity of blood serum, content of normal antibodies to Vi-antigen, lysozyme). Pronounced D hypervitaminosis led to an increase in the unspecific bactericidal activity of blood serum, accompanied by the increase in complement and lysozyme in blood serum, whereas content f lysozyme in leukocytes was decreased. The D hypervitaminosis was also accompanied by distinct atrophy of thymus and by inhibition of T-lymphocyte activity.

[The immunocorrecting effect of vitamin E during ethanol intoxication].

Chronic alcohol intoxication of mice CBA and C57BL/6 strains decreased distinctly the content of T lymphocytes in peripheric blood and inhibited the immune response to sheep erythrocytes. Vitamin E, administered into mice at a dose of 5 IU and into guinea pigs--of 50 IU within 3 days, restored completely the immunity status of these animals. Besides, vitamin E decreased ethanol consumption in mice kept under conditions of alternative choice of water-ethanol within one week after its injection.

Alcoholic Intoxication↗

[Vitamin E: immunocorrecting effect in bronchial asthma patients].

The examination of patients with bronchial asthma has established that vitamin E supplemented to their multimodality therapy produces an immunological effect. The decreased functional activity of T lymphocytes increases and their levels elevate in their peripheral blood. There was also an increase in the blood levels of B cells, by elevating the count of mature B lymphocytes and reducing that of immature B cells. Vitamin E enhances the phagocytic activity of peripheral granulocytes whereas the serum activity of lysozyme and complement declines.
