Anticholinesterase poisoning in Turkey--clinical, laboratory and radiologic evaluation of 269 cases.

A retrospective study was conducted on 269 patients with anticholinesterase poisoning who had been admitted to the Internal Medicine and Pediatric Clinics over the past 10 years. Their ages ranged from 17 d to 62 years. In adults, suicide was the most common means of intoxication. Miosis was the most frequent symptom and was seen in 80.66% of the patients. Hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia, hypokalaemia, hyperkalaemia, hyperchloraemia, hypochloraemia and hyponatraemia were among the electrolytic and haematologic disorders (hyperglycaemia 48.00%, hypoglycaemia 6.40%). There were also electrocardiographic abnormalities. Asthma, although usually a late complication, was also noted at the beginning of treatment. Mortality rates were 8.98% for children and 9.6% for adults. Since hypoglycaemia was found in all the patients who died, it was accepted as an ominous prognostic sign. We think that anticholinesterase poisoning is an important health problem in our country. It is much less common in developed than semi-developed countries, and a complete understanding of it is essential for the emergency physician.

Antimicrobial activities of Ferulago essential oils.

Essential oils from Ferulago asparagifolia Boiss., F. galbanifera (Miller) W. Koch, F. humilis Boiss. (Endemic), F. trachycarpa Boiss. growing in Turkey were evaluated against 15 microorganisms for their antifungal and antibacterial activity using an agar tube dilution and microdilution broth susceptibility assay, respectively. The essential oil compositions were investigated by GC/MS. Inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Candida albicans, Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici, Sclerotium rolfsii and Fusarium moniliforme were remarkable. Results are discussed in comparison with the chemical composition of the essential oils.

Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of some imidazo-[1,2-a]pyridine-2- carboxylic acid arylidenehydrazide derivatives.

Imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxylic acid, ethyl esters were reacted with hydrazine hydrate to furnish imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxylic acid hydrazide. The hydrazides formed were treated with various aldehydes to obtain 28 imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-2-carboxylic acid arylidenehydrazides. Antimicrobial activity of the compounds were examined.

A facile synthesis of 2-aryl-4,5-di(2-thienyl)imidazoles under microwave irradiation and their antimicrobial activities.

In this study, some 2-aryl-4,5-dithienylimidazoles were synthesized by reacting di-(2-thienyl)ethandione and a suitable aromatic aldehyde in the presence of ammonium acetate in acetic acid. Either the classical reflux method or microwave irradiation method were applied as alternative reaction conditions. The antimicrobial activities of the compounds obtained were investigated in vitro and appreciable activities were obtained.
