[Neospora caninum causes abortions in a cattle herd in North Rhine Westphalia].

In a cattle herd in North Rhine-Westphalia a series of eight abortions occurred between 15th August and 14th October, 1996. Four of the aborted fetuses were histopathologically, virologically, bacteriologically and parasitologically examined. A multifocal necrotising encephalitis was observed in two fetuses. In addition, the liver of two fetuses and the placenta of one fetus contained infected foci. In three fetuses protozoan stages were detected which were identified as N. caninum by immunohistochemistry. A polymerase chain reaction conducted with histological material revealed N. caninum-DNA in the placenta of an aborted fetus. When seven cows that had aborted were tested for antibodies directed against N. caninum, six animals were positive by immunofluorescence and all seven by immunoblotting. The serological examination of the entire herd revealed a high herd seroprevalence of antibodies directed against N. caninum. Potential modes of infection with N. caninum in the herd are discussed, in particular the possibility of exposure to a point source (definitive host).

Mediators of the long-term impact of child sexual abuse: perceived stigma, betrayal, powerlessness, and self-blame.

Using a community sample of 192 adult women who had been sexually abused during childhood, the present study tested the hypothesis that perceived stigma, betrayal, powerlessness, and self-blame mediate the long-term effects of child sexual abuse. A path analysis indicated that the level of psychological distress currently experienced by adult women who had been sexually abused in childhood was mediated by feelings of stigma and self-blame. This result provides partial support for Finkelhor and Browne's (1985) traumagenic dynamics model of child sexual abuse. The limitations of the study are discussed.

The relation between methods of coping during adulthood with a history of childhood sexual abuse and current psychological adjustment.

With a community sample of 192 women who had been sexually abused during childhood, the investigators determined if methods of coping in adulthood with the aftermath of child sexual abuse were associated with current symptoms of psychological distress. Multiple regression analyses indicated that disengagement methods of coping with the sexual abuse accounted for unique variance in general psychological distress even after controlling for characteristics of the abuse and methods of coping with other stressors. Disengagement methods of coping were also used more often to deal with the stressful aspects of having been sexually abused than to deal with other stressful events. In contrast, engagement methods of coping were used more often to deal with the other stressors than with sexual abuse.

Seroprevalence of orthopox virus specific antibodies in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in the Federal State Brandenburg, Germany.

The prevalence of orthopox virus (OPV)-specific antibodies in 1,040 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) was evaluated on a large scale in the German Federal State Brandenburg. Serum samples were selected from 809 communities within the study area from January 1991 to September 1994 by simple random sampling. Screening was carried out by an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Orthopox virus-specific antibodies were found in 162 (16%) of the 1,040 fox sera. Furthermore 154 (15%) sera were considered suspect positive. The specificity of the antibodies detected in ELISA-positive and suspect positive sera was confirmed by Western blotting. Presence of OPV-antibodies occurred in 291 communities. No correlation of OPV-antibodies findings to latitude or characteristic topographical and ecological peculiarities of the study area was found. Although the causative agent is still unknown we believe that orthopox viruses probably have a ubiquitous presence among red foxes.

Dating violence: the association between methods of coping and women's psychological adjustment.

The present study examined the psychological impact of dating violence and the relationship between methods of coping with dating violence and psychological adjustment in a nonclinical female student population. Analyses revealed that women who experienced dating violence were at significantly greater risk than a comparison group for experiencing psychological distress. More symptoms of psychological distress were observed even after controlling for differences between the groups in histories of sexual aggression since age 16 and violence experiences in childhood including physical abuse, sexual abuse, and witnessing physical conflict between one's parents. The dating violence group was also more prone to use disengagement methods of coping to deal with nondating violence stressful life events than was the comparison group. In addition, disengagement methods of coping with the dating violence per se accounted for unique variance in psychological adjustment even after controlling characteristics of dating violence and methods of coping with other stressors.

Biotransformation of diphenyl ether by the yeast Trichosporon beigelii SBUG 752.

Trichosporon beigelii SBUG 752 was able to transform diphenyl ether. By TLC, HPLC, GC, GC-MS, NMR- and UV-spectroscopy, several oxidation products were identified. The primary attack was initiated by a monooxygenation step, resulting in the formation of 4-hydroxydiphenyl ether, 2-hydroxydiphenyl ether and 3-hydroxydiphenyl ether (48:47:5). Further oxidation led to 3,4-dihydroxydiphenyl ether. As a characteristic product resulting from the cleavage of an aromatic ring, the lactone of 2-hydroxy-4-phenoxymuconic acid was identified. The possible mechanism of ring cleavage to yield this metabolite is discussed.

A seroepidemiological survey for orthopox virus in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes).

703 blood samples from red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) were investigated to determine the prevalence of antibody against an orthopox virus (vaccinia virus strain Elstree). A blocking-ELISA based on a neutralizing monoclonal antibody was used. In this assay 46 sera (6.5%) were positive with titers of 1:2 to 1:16. ELISA-results were confirmed by the plaque reduction test with 44 of the 46 sera reacting positively. The specificity of antibodies in 21 selected sera was also demonstrated by Western blot analysis.

Sexual fantasy.

This article reviews the research literature on sexual fantasy, a central aspect of human sexual behavior. Topics include (a) gender similarities and differences in the incidence, frequency, and content of sexual fantasies and how they relate to sociocultural and sociobiological theories of sexual behavior; (b) the association between frequency or content of sexual fantasies and variables such as age, sexual adjustment and satisfaction, guilt, sexual orientation, personality, and sexual experience; and (c) "deviant" sexual fantasies (i.e., what they are, whether they play a role in the commission of sexual crimes, and whether they can be modified). The article ends with a summary of major findings and suggestions for future research.

Cytotoxicity of cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa.

Cytotoxic effects of crude extracts and fractions of the purification steps towards Microcystin-LR (MCYST-LR) were investigated in vitro. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by measure of lactate dehydrogenase liberation of Chang liver cells and by hemolysis. Crude extracts of strain PCC 7806 damaged the cells within a few minutes. In contrast, MCYST-LR did not show any detectable cytotoxic effects. The cytotoxic activity could be related to a heat-labile substance with a molecular weight of about 30,000 Da.

Spontaneous remission of urinary tract obstruction and ascites in a fetus with posterior urethral valves.

We report a case of posterior urethral valves with its typical sonographic findings. The initial diagnosis of an infravesical obstruction was made at 18 weeks gestation based on the finding of an enlarged fetal bladder and bilateral dilated renal pelves. Weekly observations showed no change in bladder size until 27 weeks gestation. At this time there was a significant increase in dilatation, the bladder wall was thickened and at 28 weeks a large amount of fetal ascites was diagnosed, but there was no oligohydramnios. Fetal urine investigations following ultrasound-guided puncture of the fetal bladder revealed hypotonic urine and adequate renal function. Hence no vesicoamniotic drainage was performed. At 32 weeks, spontaneous remission of ascites and reduction of the bladder dilatation were noted. The fetus was delivered vaginally at term. Follow-up of the newborn during the 1st year of life is reported. At the age of 1 year the infant shows good renal function with a serum creatinine of 0.33 mg/dl. This case shows that spontaneous remission of fetal urinary tract obstruction as a consequence of posterior urethral valves is possible. The sequence of events leading to spontaneous remission and the favorable outcome is discussed.

A comparison of the persistence in a clay loam of single and repeated annual applications of seven granular insecticides used for corn rootworm control.

In May 1983, granular formulations of carbofuran, chlorpyrifos, disulfoton, fonofos, isofenphos, phorate, and terbufos were applied in incorporated bands to duplicate 2 m2 field plots of clay loam. Insecticide concentrations were determined in the bands at 0,1,2,3,4,6,8,10,12,16, and 20 wk. Following spring cultivation, the insecticides were applied to the same plots in 1984 and 1985. In addition, carbofuran was applied to previously untreated plots in 1984 and all 7 materials were applied to previously untreated plots in 1985. Sampling and analysis were carried out as in 1983. Persistence was assessed on the basis of the disappearance rates measured for the 1st 8 wk and of a calculated Effectiveness Potential (the ratio of the average residue in the upper 5 cm of the band at 8, 10 and 12 wk and the published LC95 for western corn rootworm in clay loam soil). Soils treated with carbofuran and isofenphos in 1984 and all soils treated in 1985 were tested for anti-insecticide activity. Soil cores from some carbofuran, chlorpyrifos and terbufos treated plots were sectioned vertically to establish the distribution of the insecticides during 1985. In addition, granular and pure chemical forms of isofenphos and carbofuran were applied at 10 ppm to anti-isofenphos and anti-carbofuran active and control soils (from field plots) maintained at 10 and 20% moisture in the laboratory to assess the effect of formulation and moisture on persistence in active soils. Insecticide concentrations were determined at 0,1,3,7, 10,14,21,28, and 35 days. The persistence of chlorpyrifos, terbufos and phorate was relatively constant over the 3 years and between plots receiving single and multiple treatments. Disulfoton and fonofos behavior was more variable and that of carbofuran and isofenphos was extremely variable. Anti-insecticide activity against carbofuran and isofenphos was detectable 2 wk after an initial application and was still present the following spring. Anti-insecticide activity against fonofos, terbufos sulfoxide, phorate sulfone and disulfoton sulfone was also generated in this soil. Anti-insecticide activity against chlorpyrifos, disulfoton, terbufos and phorate was not present. Carbofuran, chlorpyrifos and terbufos (+ metabolites) present in the upper 5 cm of soil averaged 93, 94 and 94%, respectively, of the total core contents over 12 wk. Significant moisture dependent differences were observed between the behavior of granular carbofuran and granular isofenphos in anti-insecticide active soils.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Determination of beta-endorphin and substance P in small volumes of human cerebrospinal fluid.

A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography procedure combined with radioimmunoassay (rp-HPLC-RIA) is presented. It makes possible the quantitative determination of the neuropeptides, beta h-endorphin and substance P, in small volumes of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The concentration-dependence of the recovery of the method is demonstrated and the effect of free silanol groups of the stationary phase on the recovery is discussed. CSF was shown to contain 9.6 +/- 1.1 fmol beta h-endorphin and 12.0 +/- 0.9 fmol substance P per ml.
