Diffuse panbronchiolitis with multiple tumorlets. A quantitative study of the Kultschitzky cells and the clusters.

An autopsy case of diffuse panbronchiolitis with incidentally observed multiple tumorlets was reported. Quantitative study revealed the distribution and number of single Kultschitzky cell and its cluster. These cells were more frequently observed in the present case than in 20 control cases, and moreover, they tended to occur more frequently in the pulmonary segment in which tumorlets were found and there was an apparent transition of them into tumorlets. Immunohistochemically, gastrin-releasing peptide, calcitonin, and serotonin were demonstrable in the cells which consisted of both tumorlets and Kultschitzky cell clusters. It is suggested that the Kultschitzky cell is a precursor cell of the tumorlet and that tumorlet is benign, being hyperplastic in nature.

Amyloid vascular disease and contracted kidneys--report of a case with review of literature.

A case of systemic amyloidosis associated with bronchiectasis is presented. At necropsy, contracted kidneys and centrilobular necrosis of the liver were observed. Systemic blood vessels had heavy deposition of amyloid, and the possibility of visceral ischemia and the development of contracted kidneys due to amyloid vascular disease as a pathogenetic relationship, was discussed against the background of a review of the literature.

Dissociation of circadian rhythms in rats with a hypothalamic island.

Complete isolation of the medial basal hypothalamus, including the suprachiasmatic nuclei in the isolated island, from the rest of the central nervous system was performed in rats. The circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone level remained essentially intact in 5 of 16 rats with complete islands, whereas that of spontaneous locomotor activity was decomposed into ultradian bursts in 15 rats, resulting in a clear dissociation of the two rhythms in four rats. One rat, whose circadian rhythm of both variables persisted after the hypothalamic isolation, showed a diurnal activity. The 24-h patterns of plasma corticosterone of the other rats could be characterized as either episodic or continuously low throughout the day. A prefeeding corticosterone peak was detected under restricted feeding in rats with episodic fluctuations but not in those with continuously low hormone levels. It is concluded that the hypothalamic island includes the fundamental structures necessary for the manifestation of the entrained circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone in rats under ad libitum feeding, whereas it contains only a part of that for spontaneous locomotor activity. The coupling pathways from the circadian oscillator(s) to these overt rhythms seem to be separate in the central nervous system, and the circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone is not a direct consequence of that of locomotor activity.

Ethosecretogram: relation of behavior to plasma corticosterone in freely moving rats.

An ethosecretogram, which illustrates the phase relation between animal behavior and plasma hormone levels, was constructed in conscious rats. A catheter was placed into the right atrium in male rats 2 days before blood sampling. Plasma corticosterone levels were monitored individually through the catheter every 5 min over a period of several hours under freely moving conditions on an Animex, which records spontaneous locomotor activity. The results showed that the bursts of locomotor activity were temporally correlated with those of plasma corticosterone level, the peak of the former preceding the hormone peak by 15 min. Regarding the type of locomotor activity, feeding and grooming were significantly correlated with the subsequent hormone elevation, whereas drinking was not. In a separate series of experiments, effects of feeding and drinking on plasma corticosterone levels were examined in conscious rats that had been fasted or water deprived for 24 or 48 h. In both cases, feeding induced a more pronounced elevation than drinking, although locomotor activity counts per se increased more sharply in the latter. It is concluded that in the ethosecretogram specific types of locomotor activity such as feeding and grooming induce a phase-locked elevation of plasma corticosterone under freely moving conditions.

Selective depression of prefeeding corticosterone peak in rat by sodium pentobarbital injection.

Dependency of prefeeding corticosterone peak on the time of meal supply and effects of an anesthetic, sodium pentobarbital, on both prefeeding and light-entrainable circadian hormone peaks were examined in rats. The prefeeding hormone peak which developed under restricted feeding was more prominent when rats had access to meal in the evening than in the morning. However, the increment of the hormone level above the baseline was greater in the morning than in the evening. An intraperitoneal injection of pentobarbital depressed the prefeeding hormone peak to the baseline level of circadian excursion at both times of day, but did not affect the light-entrainable circadian rise of the hormone level. It is concluded that the magnitude of prefeeding corticosterone peak under restricted feeding depends on the time of day and the mechanism behind the hormone peak was different from that underlying the light-entrainable circadian rhythm in that the former is sensitive to pentobarbital while the latter is insensitive to it.

[The significance of "capsular infiltration" of testicular Leydig cells--an autopsy study].

By means of histiopathologic analysis of testes from 462 autopsy cases of extratesticular diseases, the frequency and degree of so-called "capsular infiltration" of testicular Leydig cells as well as its relationship to hyperplasia of intraparenchymal Leydig cells and atrophy of the seminiferous tubules were semiquantitatively investigated. As a result, a positive correlation was demonstrated between the number of intracapsular Leydig cells and age, and the possibility of this phenomenon as an ageing process was suggested. Simultaneous hyperplastic processes of intraparenchymal Leydig cells were also associated with significantly higher frequency of "capsular infiltration". In addition, the morphogenesis of capsular Leydig-cells as well as several possible mechanisms concerning local control of Leydig cells were discussed from the analogy of other endocrine systems and review of literatures.

Ontogeny of an oscillation underlying the circadian rhythm of plasma corticosterone in rats.

In previous reports (J. Physiol. 325, 493, 507, 521, 1982) we have suggested a prenatal onset of the circadian oscillation in rats. This was based mainly on the findings obtained in pups which were reared by an alternating nursing. In the present study we have applied this technique to experiments which were designed to determine the stage of gestation in the original mother that decided the phase angle of pup's hormone rhythm which was to develop later in the postnatal life. In this experiment we observed, though preliminarily, that reversal of the light-dark cycle of the pregnant mother at day 10 of pregnancy resulted in an effective reversal of pup's hormone rhythm, whereas the reversal at day 17 of pregnancy failed to affect it. From these results it is surmised that the original mother primarily determined the phase angle of the circadian oscillation in the fetus prior to the 17th day of gestation.

Effects of restricted daily feeding on freerunning circadian rhythms in rats.

Male rats were kept in conditions of constant dim illumination and alternately fed ad lib or for 2 or 4 hr per day only. Locomotor activity was recorded as wheel running and as activity in the cage by a microphone system. At selected days before, during and after restricted feeding (RF) blood samples were taken from the tail in 4-hr intervals for the determination of plasma corticosterone. Under both schedules of RF, the circadian rhythms of activity and of plasma corticosterone continued to freerun without significant changes in period or phase while the feeding times were anticipated by increases in activity and in plasma corticosterone. After the termination of RF, the anticipatory components persisted for several days and merged into the freerunning rhythms through transients. The results support the concept of two systems with oscillatory capacities: the freerunning system which is driven by a pacemaker and not affected by RF, and the anticipatory system which can be uncoupled from the freerunning system by an entraining feeding cycle.

Chronic myelocytic leukemia with marked myelofibrosis and osteosclerosis.

An autopsy case of a 50 years old woman who manifested chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML) with secondary myelofibrosis (SMF) is reported. The interesting point of this case was a marked diffuse myelofibrosis (MF) with osteosclerosis, so that it was difficult to make a diagnosis of either CML or idiopathic myelofibrosis (IMF), but both clinical and histological findings supported the diagnosis of CML with SMF. Her long term busulfan therapy was suspected as being the cause of this severe MF. The relationship of CML and IMF was also discussed.

Basal cell epithelioma of the penis: a case report.

A 65-year-old man had a tumor with a small ulcer on the foreskin of his penis. A local excision was performed. Histological examination of the specimen revealed superficial basal cell epithelioma. Basal cell epithelioma is a common tumor of the skin, but is rarely found on the penis. Only 11 cases have been reported in the European and American literature. Basal cell epitheliomas were formerly called basal cell carcinomas and were treated as true carcinomas. However, recently they have been treated as benign tumors because of their good prognosis and rare metastasis.
