The myelin fraction from human peripheral nerve was prepared. Two basic protein fractions (BF-P2 and PB) were isolated from acid extracts of the myelin fraction and three glycoproteins (BR-PO, PASII and Y protein) were purified from its acid-insoluble residue. In biochemical analysis the human BF-P2 protein (M.W.13,000) showed similar but not identical properties to bovine BF-P2 protein. The PB fraction was suggested to include the encephalitogenic CNS-BP (M.W.18,000) and another, new protein of similar molecular weight. Both the human BR-PO protein (M.W.28,000) and PASII protein (M.W.13,000) showed similar biochemical properties to the corresponding myelin proteins of bovine peripheral nerve, while they both are clearly different from other myelin proteins. Close relationship between the BR-PO protein and the Y protein (M.W.22,000) was suggested by amino acid analysis. Injection of the myelin fraction of bovine peripheral nerve with the complete adjuvant produced EAN while the CNS-BP induced EAE in laboratory animals. However, all three purified proteins, BF-P2, BR-PO and PASII, from bovine peripheral nerve myelin were inactive in inducing demyelinating diseases.
From printout data of 50 normal and 50 abnormal scans of a brain slice picking up the basal ganglia the numerical values of SD and DC were obtained and those values lying inside M + 2sigma were arbitrarily regarded as normal. By these criteria two cases (4%) were diagnosed as false negative and three cases (6%) as false positive, with a misdiagnosis rate of 5%.
The case is that of a 21-year-old female with mediastinal and subcutaneous, tumors composed of sarcomatous growth of poorly differentiated histiocytes defined by enzyme histochemical staining, ultrastructural observation and detection of surface markers. At autopsy neoplastic cells in the solid tumor became less cohesive and pleomorphic with erythrophagia, while features in the lymph node draining from the tumor was compatible with the criteria of malignant histiocytosis. The place where such a sarcomatous variant of malignant histiocytosis should be placed within other histiocytic tumors is discussed and the literature reviewed.
Twelve primary fourth ventricle tumors and 22 medulloblastomas occupying mainly the fourth ventricle were analyzed, with emphasis on the differential diagnosis, vascularity, and some unusual findings. Though both types of tumor often have identical manifestations, the correct diagnosis can be made in most cases by careful evaluation of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery, particularly the choroidal and nodular branches. Unusual findings in primary fourth ventricle tumors mimicking tumors of the pons and medulla oblongata are described, and possible explanations for these findings are discussed. The results of this study underscore the importance of angiotomography in the diagnosis of tumors of the fourth ventricle.
Maximal aerobic power was measured for 5-6 successive years in 50 Japanese schoolboys starting from the age of 9 or 13 yr. and for 2-3 yr in 6 superior junior runners from the age of 14 yr. A large increase in aerobic power was observed during the adolescent growth spurt for 7 schoolboys who trained between the ages of 9 and 14 yr. Aerobic power for 43 average schoolboys increased from 45.0 to 52.2 ml/kg.min between the ages of 13 and 17 yr. The aerobic power of 6 superior junior runners increased from 63.4 to 73.4 ml/kg.min between the ages of 14 and 17 yr. A remarkable increase in aerobic power was not observed in trained boys before the age of peak height growth velocity (PHV). Beginning approximately 1 yr prior to the age of PHV and thereafter, training effectively increased aerobic power above the normal increase attributable to age and growth. The highly developed aerobic power found in superior junior runners may have been derived from strenuous training and partially by genetically superior endowment.
Rostral mesencephalic reticulotomy (RMR) has been performed since 1973 for relief of intractable pain. The target area is in the midbrain reticular formation (MRF) bordering the periaqueductal gray matter at the superior collicular level. The target of RMR is 13--16 mm posterior to the midpoint of the AC-PC line and 5--8 mm below the AC-PC line. The laterality of the target is measured from the center of the aqueduct, ranging 5 to 8 mm from the midline. The rationale for this procedure is based upon the previous findings that the brain stem reticular formation plays a more important role above the spinal cord level than the lateral spinothalamic tract in the central conduction of nociceptive impulse. In the present study, intraoperative single neuron recording was made with tungsten microelectrodes from the human midbrain tegmentum in response to peripheral pinprick stimulation. These nociceptive neurons were classified into three groups in regard to the unit latency from the peripheral pinprick stimulation.

Digitoxin, 1 mg, was orally administered to 12 cirrhotic patients (the 6 in a clinically compensated and the 6 in a decompensated state) and their serum concentrations were measured at 6 hours and everyday through 7 days by radioimmunoassay. The serum half-life of digitoxin in these groups and normal subjects, determined from the serum concentrations, was as follows: 4.7 +/- 0.55 days for controls, 4.9 +/- 0.45 days for the compensated group and 5.3 +/- 0.35 days for the decompensated group. No statistically significant difference could be found in half-life among these groups. (P less than 0.2). The same dose of digitoxin was orally administered to 6 cirrhotic patients and 6 control subjects and their left ventricular systolic time intervals, LVET and QS2, were determined at 6 hours and every morning for 7 days. Cardiac responses, exhibited by decrease in the systolic time intervals, in both control subjects and cirrhotic patients dissipated in fair parallel during the ensuing 4 days and returned to base line level by 5 days. From these both biological half-life and physiological effect, it may be concluded that overall metabolism of digitoxin in cirrhotic patients is not disturbed.
Longitudinal muscle of the rabbit jejunum usually generated burst discharges, whereas circular muscle mainly generated slow potential change. Membrane potential was higher, and the space and time constants were larger in circular muscle than in longitudinal muscle. Current-voltage relationship exhibited anomalous rectification by depolarization of membrane in longitudinal muscle cells, and delayed rectification in most circular muscle. Excitatory junction potentials (e.j.p.s) were recorded from both muscles and inhibitory junction potentials (i.j.p.s) were recorded from only circular muscle. The e.j.p.s consisted of muscarinic e.j.p.s and atropineresistant e.j.p.s, but only the latter were recorded from circular muscle. The i.j.p.s were not affected by either or both alpha- and beta-blockers, but were blocked by TTX. From mechanical and electrical responses of both muscle layers induced by field stimulation, it was postulated that four different types of nerve fibres innervate the jejunum muscles: (I) cholinergic excitatory nerves, (II) non-adrenergic and non-cholinergic inhibitory nerves (or purinergic nerves), (III) non-adrenergic and non-cholinergic excitatory nerves and (IV) adrenergic inhibitory nerves. In the longitudinal muscle, (I) was dominant, but (II) was also found. In the circular muscle all four types were found to exist. Effects of adrenergic nerve stimulation on the membrane potential was not detected by stimulation below 10 Hz, although externally applied noradrenaline at 5.9 X 10(-8)m had a relaxing effect.

The experiment was made on effect of Cardiocrome (containing Cytochrome c, Co-Carboxylase and Flavin mononucleotide), Cytochrome c and Cytidine diphosphate (CDP) choline on the EEG arousal response induced by electrical stimulation of mesencephalic reticular formation in 68 unanesthetized immobilized cats. The arousal response was accelerated by intravenous injection of Cardiocrome, Cytochrome c and CDP-choline. The accelerating effect of Cardiocrome was more prominet than that of Cytochrome c. In conclusion, it can be drawn that Cardiocrome has an arousal effect on consciousness.
