[Chemotherapy of hepatocellular carcinoma--with special reference to one-shot intra-arterial infusion of a high dose of adriamycin].

Twenty-two cases of non-operable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were treated with three types of chemotherapy mainly with Adriamycin (ADM). In the group (A), one shot intraarterial infusion of 100 mg ADM into the hepatic artery (9 cases), group (B), one shot intraarterial infusion of 30 mg ADM (3 cases), and group (C), 20-60 mg of systemic administration of ADM (10 cases) were examined. The therapeutic effects and side effects were studied comparatively among these three groups. In terms of tumor regression, RR was 4 cases (44.4%), and MR was 4 (44.4%) in group (A), and PR was 1 (10%) in group (C). The average survival time was 8.3 months (5 cases are still alive) in group (A), 5.7 months in group (B), and 4.2 months in group (C), respectively As side effects, alopecia was found 100% in (A), 33% in (B); leukocytopenia was found 100% in (A), 33% in (B); but no serious complication due to leukocytopenia was observed in any of them. One shot of 100 mg of ADM intraarterial infusion therapy seemed to be superior in therapeutic effects against HCC over other therapies.

[Clinical effects of netilmicin].

In the present study, we used netilmicin for the postoperative complications and obtained the following results. 1. Netilmicin was used in totally 29 cases; 23 with localized peritonitis, 4 with generalized peritonetis and 2 with wound infection. Excellent effects were obtained in 2 cases, effective results in 24 cases and ineffective results in 3 cases. The effective rate was 89.7%. 2. Adverse reactions or abnormal clinical laboratory test results which might be attributable to the use of netilmicin were not noticed.

Significance of pregnancy-associated alpha 2-glycoprotein (alpha 2-PAG) in patients with breast, gastric and colorectal cancer.

Pregnancy-associated alpha 2-glycoprotein (alpha 2-PAG) levels were measured in human sera by a modification of Laurell's electroimmunoassay using rabbit anti-alpha 2-PAG serum. Sera were obtained from healthy controls (32 males and 46 females), patients with benign breast diseases (55 cases), and patients with breast (82 cases), gastric (89 cases), or colorectal (22 cases) cancers. In healthy controls, the mean alpha 2-PAG value for females was higher than that for males (p less than 0.05), so alpha 2-PAG values for males and females were considered separately in this study. Serum alpha 2-PAG levels in patients with benign breast tumors were almost the same as those of controls. In patients with primary breast and gastric cancer, alpha 2-PAG levels were higher than those of controls (p less than 0.005) and tended to increase with progress of the disease. Raised alpha 2-PAG levels decreased in these patients after curative surgery. These results show that serum alpha 2-PAG is useful as a marker in both the initial diagnosis and follow-up of breast and gastric cancer. The reliability of alpha 2-PAG as a tumor-associated marker was reinforced by comparison of the positive rates of the three parameters alpha 2-PAG, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and immunosuppressive acidic protein (IAP) in patients with breast and gastric cancer.
