In 95 patients suffering blunt abdominal trauma the diagnostic validity of abdominal exploration, blood pressure, pulse rate, leukocyte count, and hemoglobin was compared with the results of peritoneal lavage for the detection of intra-abdominal bleeding. Classical clinical symptoms alone are not reliable in evaluation of the patient with abdominal trauma, especially if there are associated multiple injuries. Diagnostic peritoneal lavage has the highest accuracy (more than 95%) and an early diagnosis of intraperitoneal bleeding by widespread use of this method improves the prognosis in these patients.
Morphology, clinical signs and symptoms as well as surgical therapy of ulcerative colitis are discussed comparing own findings with results reported in the literature. Case reports are given of 48 patients with special emphasis on indications for surgical treatment, methods of surgery and complications. Timing of surgery and medical pretreatment do play a decisive role. The treatment of choice today is proctocolectomy with terminal ileostomy in one session; more serious complications as well as transition into a carcinoma can thus be avoided. In some acute cases a fistula-operation may be indicated for short-term relief.
Two cases of benign tumors of the extrahepatic biliary ducts with relapsing jaundice are reported. In both cases operation with conservation of natural draining of bile could be performed. Benign tumors of the bile ducts should be taken into consideration, if relapsing jaundice is combined with negative cholangiography or is noticed long time after cholecystecomy of on gallbladder without gallstones. Primary origin of cystadenomas from the extra hepatic biliary ducts is demonstrated.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy and appendectomy are widely accepted in clinical practice. In the initial stage, when the method is introduced, there are a number of mistakes, risks, and complications possible. The surgeons, the staff, the instruments, the anesthetist, and, last but not least, the patient, are among the possible contributing causes. We try to analyze the reasons and conditions leading to possible complications. Complications we have experienced are reported. In our conclusions we try to show how it is possible to avoid severe problems.
