Effects of toluene inhalation on locomotor activity and brain catecholamine levels in rats.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of toluene inhalation on locomotor activity and brain catecholamine levels. The inhaling of toluene vapor (0.7% in air, for 15 min) induced the increase in spontaneous locomotor activity. This locomotor accelerating effect lasted about 60 min after the end of toluene exposure. The repeated exposure was apt to decrease the rate of increase in toluene induced locomotor acceleration. The levels of brain noradrenaline and dopamine were not changed in the single inhaled rats. In the repeatedly inhaled (for 14 days) rats, dopamine level was significantly increased with no change in noradrenaline level. These results suggest that toluene may raise dopaminergic neuron activity.

A preliminary double-blind study on the efficacy of carbamazepine in prophylaxis of manic-depressive illness.

A preliminary double-blind controlled study on the prophylactic effect of carbamazepine on recurrent manic-depressive psychotics was conducted with 22 patients using an inert placebo in ten subjects as a control drug. Carbamazepine in the dosage of 200-600 mg was administered for 1 year. Among the 22 carbamazepine subjects, carbamazepine was found to be effective in 60% of the cases and inert placebo in 22.2% (U-test, P less than 0.10). It is suggested that carbamazepine is a useful drug for the prophylaxis of manic-depressive illness.

[Diagnosis and treatment of chylopericardium (author's transl)].

In a 22-year-old patient without clinical symptoms, a chylous pericardial effusion was found as cause of pericardial enlargement persisting over 7 years. Ultrasonic echocardiography, diagnostic pericardial puncture and the demonstration of chylomicrons enabled the diagnosis to be made. Lymphography showed lymphangiectasis of the thoracic duct. At operation two fistulous connections between pericardium and lymphatic system were found. Surgical ligature of the thoracic duct and the lymphatic fistulae and pericardial fenestration resulted in rapid normalisation of all findings.

Concentrations of thiamine and its phosphate esters in rat tissues determined by high-performance liquid chromatography.

Thiamine and its phosphate esters in rat tissues were determined by high-performances liquid chromatography after conversion to thiochrome and its phosphate esters as described previously (Ishii, K. et al. (1979) Anal. Biochem., 97, 191--195). Total thiamine concentrations determined in the brain, liver, heart and kidney were 6.39, 25.5, 15.7, and 14.9 nmol/g wet weight, respectively. In all the tissues tested, thiamine, its monophosphate, pyrophosphate, and triphosphate were found to be present at the rates of 1.2--7.7, 5.9--11.0, 85.7--90.0, and 0.7--1.6%, respectively. Although these percentages of thiamine phosphates were similar to those reported previously using different procedures, the percentage of thiamine triphosphate content in rat tissues was found to be fairly lower than that reported. The time required for the whole process of analysis averaged 90 min after isolation of the organs from the animal.
