Extracellular polysaccharide synthesized by the oral bacterium Streptococcus mutans of serotype a to e in vitro.

Extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) synthesized in vitro by Streptococcus mutans belonging to serotypes a, b, c, d and e was shown to consist mainly of glucan. Only strains of type b and e regularly produced substantial amounts of fructan, too. Strains of type d synthesized significantly higher quantities of glucan than strains of the other types per gram of bacterial mass. The percentage of insoluble glucan was lowest in samples from strains of type a and c, and highest in samples from strains of type d. In contrast to the insoluble glucan, the linkage pattern of the soluble glucan of the five types showed only small differences. The percentage of alpha-1,3-linked glucose units was highest in the insoluble glucan from strains of type d and e, and lowest in glucan from type c. The differences were significant. Incubation of Strep. mutans under various culture conditions showed that the quantities and composition of EPS formed depend on the culture condition used. The effect of culture conditions, however, was similar for all strains. Therefore the differences found with respect to the quantities and composition of EPS synthesized in vitro by Strep. mutans of different types are apparently type-dependent.

An evaluation of serum protein profiles in the long-term surveillance of prostatic cancer.

Longitudinal and vertical studies on prostatic cancer have confirmed that many forms of oestrogen therapy have a profound effect on the levels of several acute phase reactant proteins (APRP). This action overrides any response of the APRPs to a rising tumour load. However, serum C-Reactive protein and albumin levels appear to be independent of oestrogen control and their respective rise and fall is associated with tumour progression even when the patient is saturated with oestrogens.

[Synthesis of extracellular polysaccharides by various forms of Streptococcus salivarius].

Streptococcus salivarius synthesizes extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) from saccharose under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Under aerobic conditions primarily soluble fructanes are formed. There are no differences between the EPS synthesized by r- and s-forms under aerobic conditions; anaerobically the s-forms produce more EPS and more fructane than the r-forms. As compared to streptococcus mutans, the streptococcus salivarius produces considerably more fructane and insoluble glucane under the conditions used.

[Cariogenic properties of various snacks in animal experiments].

In a conventional animal experiment with rats, the cariogenic properties of different snacks were studied and compared. Bananas caused the highest caries incidence, apples the lowest. In between ranged the caries values of two other tested sweets, wafers and gum drops. The differences in caries incidence were due to specific chemo-physical properties (stickiness, fat content). In addition to the evaluation of caries incidence, microbiological plaque examinations and sugar analyses of the tested substances were carried out.

[Extracellular polysaccharides from Streptococcus mutans of various biotypes--chemical characterization and enzymatic hydrolysis].

The composition and proportions of different types of compound were established in extracellular polysaccharides synthesized in virto by streptococcus mutans strains of various biotypes. The polysaccharides were further enzymatically hydrolysed with dextranase and the degree of hydrolysis as well as the character and amount of the products of decomposition were determined. Under the conditions employed the strains synthesized solely glucanes. The water insoluble polysaccharides of strains of various biotypes show significant differences with regard to the proportions of alpha 1,3 and alpha 1,3,6-compounds. There is a significant correlation between the proportions of these compounds and the degree of hydrolysis by dextranase.

Studies of transitional cell tumours of the bladder. Prognosis and causes of death.

Transitional cell tumours of the bladder from a total of 228 patients were histologically classified as papillomas, papillomatous carcinomas and non-papillomatous carcinomas. Each group was subdivided into four grades of dysplasia. Papillomas and papillomatous carcinomas occurred in younger patients at a higher rate than non-papillomatous carcinomas. The 5-year-survival of patients with papillomas and carcinomas was 70 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively. Among patients with papillomas with dysplasia grades 1 and 2 the survival rate was almost identical. In the group of patients with papilloma thrombo-embolic diseases were the most common cause of death. Carcinoma of the bladder developed in about 30 per cent of the patients in this group. Recurrence of the papilloma only rarely changed the grade of dysplasia. If the recurrence was in the form of a carcinoma, an increase in the grade of dysplasia was common. The survival was more favourable among patients with carcinoma dysplasia grade 2 than among those with dysplasia grade 3. The rate of survival was higher in the group of patients with papillomatous carcinoma than among patients with non-papillomatous carcinomas. Among the decreased patients with primary carcinomas, 77 per cent died with carcinoma of the bladder. To a certain degree, the grade of tumour cell dysplasia seems to be an expression of the malignancy of the tumours. The duration of the disease and the appearance of tumours (papillomatous, non-papillomatous) may have relation to the patients' "defence" system. At autopsy, the papillomatous and non-papillomatous carcinomas were found to be similarly disseminated regardless of the difference in survival rate.
