A 47-year-old patient developed several rapidly growing tumours in his right leg. Histiologic and electron microscopic examination revealed morphological characteristics suggesting the histiocytic origin of the tumour cells. An important finding was the striking number of pleomorphic membraneous inclusions and large vacuoles containing numerous small vesicles. These cytoplasmic inclusions are interpreted as transformed multivesicular bodies. Their formation may be an expression of an increased and bizarre membraneous activity of a malignant cell race. Radiotherapy resulted in a remarkable rapid and complete remission.
Tissue biopsies of the breast with and without carcinomas were examined simultaneously by intraoperative histology and imprint cytology. In 95 per cent of the cases there was a good correlation between the histologic and cytologic diagnoses. The reliability of imprint cytology was tested in some complicated cases such as proliferating fibroadenomas, pseudoinvasive adenosis and carcinomas. In 20,2 per cent of the cases with carcinoma, the tumor cells showed peculiar intracytoplasmic inclusions, whereas such inclusions were found only in 0,43 per cent of the biopsies of mammas without carcinoma. Their morphological variations and the histochemical pattern are discussed. The results have demonstrated that simultaneous cytologic examination of unfixed mamma biopsies can be a good screening method and that the intracytoplasmic inclusions may be an especially helpful histopathologic feature in the diagnosis of breast cancer.
Malignant testicular tumors mainly occur in early adult life. 14 (7.8%) of our 180 patients with testicular tumors, treated from 1966 to 1976, were between 50 to 68 years of age. The pathological anatomical classification showed 9 germinal and 5 non-germinal tumors. To find out which tumor classification is the best for prognostic information and assessment of therapeutic consequences, we recommend setting up a central testicular tumor panel and register and refer to the multilateral study already initiated.

To successfully combat cancer, research needs to be based on prospective investigations and central collation of data. An initial report is presented concerning one such investigation that has been in progress since September, 1976: "central register and combined study of testicular tumors--Bonn." The aims are to collate epidemiologic data, achieve a standardization of the stages of the cycle of the seminiferous epithelium and of classification, on the model of the WHO, as well as to attain maximum efficiency of diagnosis and therapy. Fourteen participating clinics in the German Federal Republic, Austria, and Switzerland, and 70 submissions of data up to the 1st of March, 1977, amply justify the efforts so far expended and encourage us to solicit the cooperation of previous nonparticipants.
There were 700 tissue biopsies of the breast with and without carcinomas examined simultaneously by intraoperative histology and imprint cytology. In 20.2% of the cases with carcinoma the tumor cells showed peculiar intracytoplasmic inclusions, whereas in only 0.43% of the biopsies of the mamma without carcinoma such inclusions were to be found. Their morphologic variation and the histochemical pattern are discussed. It is pointed out that these intracytoplasmic inclusions may be a helpful histopathologic feature in the diagnosis of breast cancer.
250 tissue biopsies of the mamma were examined simultaneously by intraoperative histology (frozen sections) and imprint cytology. In 95% of the cases there was a good agreement between the histologic and cytologic diagnoses. The reliability of the imprint cytology was tested in some complicated cases such as proliferating fibroadenomas, sclerosing adenosis and carcinomas and the significance of the imprint cytology for the diagnosis of difficult cases was pointed out in detail. The results have demonstrated, that such a cytologic examination can not be a substitute for intraoperative frozen sections - but the simultaneous cytologic examination of unfixed mamma biopsies can be a good searching method and can be helpful in the intraoperative diagnostic.
A carcinoma of the renal pelvis was diagnosed in a female patient 42 years after a retrograde Thorotrast pyelogram. The patient died as a result of the carcinoma at the age of 60. The literature is reviewed. As a result of this case, the need is stressed for early recognition of Thorotrast depositis in the kidney. In this case it was demonstrated by autoradiography. Appropriate treatment is discussed.
Basal cell carcinoma-the most common malignant disease in man-only rarely metastasizes. The skeletal system is involved in 20 to 30% of the cases. As an isolated finding only a few cases are described. This case report presents the history of a 61 years old man, who developed 11 years after diagnosis of a basal cell carcinoma of the temple skin several vertebral metastases. Other sites of tumor manifestations could not be confirmed up to now. Clinical and histological findings as well as possible criteria for a high metastatic risk are discussed.
