Identification from crossed electro-immunodiffusion patterns of serum.

An attempt to identify the individuality from crossed electro-immunodiffusion (CEID) patterns of serum was made by using coefficient of variation (CV), the ratio of standard deviation to mean of ratios of area in couples of corresponding peaks in the CEID patterns. The values of CV in most cases of sera from identical subject were less than 10 except only one case of 10.6. On the contrary, those in most cases of sera from different subjects were more than 20 except a few cases of 14.9 to 20. No overlap of CV values was observed between the two groups. No significant differences were demonstrated in three groups of sex pairing, i.e., male-male, female-female and female-male. From these results, analysis of CEID patterns by employing CV was found to be available for fairly definite identification as well as differentiation but useless for distinction of sexes in cases of different subjects.

Esterase D phenotypes in North-eastern Japan.

Esterase D (EsD) was typed in 2,367 unrelated healthy blood donors from Yamagata and Miyagi districts, north-eastern area of Japan. The gene frequencies observed were: EsD1 = 0.642, EsD2 = 0.358. In these blood donors two rare EsD phenotypes, EsD 3-2 and a new variant, were found. As for this new variant, the mode of hereditary transmission was discussed by family study.

Lactate dehydrogenase and glutamic oxalic transaminase isozymes in heart muscle of forensic pathological cases.

LDH and GOT isozyme patterns in the heart muscle of forensic pathological cases were investigated to find out the relationship between their changes and the causes of death. In most cases of death by violence, natural causes, poisoning and cold, the sum of LDH-1 and LDH-2 averaged about 80-90% of the total LDH, and GOTs was equal to or slightly lower than GOTm. In about two thirds of cases of asphyxia and drowning, LDH-1 and LDH-2 decreased and LDH-3, LDH-4 and LDH-5 increased. The activity of GOTs decreased and the ratio of GOTs/GOTm diminished. In neonate, LDH-3 showed the highest activity, followed by LDH-2 and LDH-1. GOTm was much less than GOTs. In most cases of cardiac death from unknown cause and cot death, LDH-3 increased remarkably, though it was less than LDH-1 and LDH-2, and GOTm became much less than GOTs. These findings revealed that there were some similarities in the LDH and GOT isozyme patterns in the heart muscle of the cardiac death from unknown cause and cot death and that of neonate.

Sudden infant death syndrome: histological studies on adrenal gland and kidney.

Histological observations were made on the adrenal glands and kidneys in ten cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The amount of fetal cortex was excessive in the adrenal glands and many glomeruli of fetal form were observed in the kidneys. These findings suggest that the adrenal glands and the kidneys in SIDS cases are more or less immature in development. The immature development in these organs, especially in the adrenal glands, was considered to play a role in the cardiac or respiratory mechanisms in SIDS.

The course of respiration and circulation in death by carbon dioxide poisoning.

To investigate the effects of very high concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) upon the course of respiration and circulation, dogs were allowed to breathe high concentrations of CO2 while intrathoracic pressure, blood pressure (BP) in the femoral artery, electrocardiogram and electroencephalogram readings were registered. The respiratory movements either increased just after inhalation of high concentrations of CO2 and then ceased in 1 min, or decreased and continued for a while according to the concentrations of CO2. The BP showed an initial depression, then returned to the original level, then fell again rapidly or maintained an appreciable level for a while until circulatory breakdown. In the dogs allowed to breathe the gas mixture of 80% CO2 with 20% O2, the respiratory movement ceased in 1 min, and the terminal respirations were seen with the circulatory breakdown after apnoea of several minutes. These findings showed that the cause of death in breathing high concentrations of CO2 is not hypoxia, but the CO2 poisoning.

Orosomucoid phenotyping with monoclonal antibodies:polymorphic occurrence of ORM1*Q0 in aboriginal Taiwanese populations.

Three monoclonal antibodies (OR35, OR40 and OR48) against orosomucoid (ORM) were prepared for the phenotyping of the human ORM system. The OR35 and OR48 antibodies recognized ORM1 and ORM2 products, respectively. OR40 reacted strongly to the products of ORM1 but poorly to those of ORM2. With the help of these monoclonal antibodies, ORM phenotyping was performed on 658 individuals from nine subpopulations of aboriginal Taiwanese, with close attention to two individuals with an ORM1 Q0 homozygous phenotype. The ORM1*Q0 allele was found to be at a polymorphic frequency in eight of the nine subpopulations.
