[Arachnoid cysts (pathomorphological studies)].

Based on a macro- and microscopic analysis of the material of 2 section cases and 29 biopsies of persons operated on for arachnoidal cysts two types of cysts were distinguished: 1) arachnoidal cysts that occurred as a result of isolated congenital pathology of the leptomeninx; 2) cysts representing a manifestation of the combined developmental abnormality of the CNS occurring in the form of arachnoidal cysts coupled with intracerebral ones and with pathology of the adjacent cortical parts in the form of gross impairment of its architectonics and developmental abnormality of cerebral vessels.

[Morphofunctional shifts in the thyroid and liver and a change in the thyroid hormone level in the blood with the internal use of iodine-containing waters].

Assessment of thyroid function and antitoxic protein-synthesizing function of hepatocytes at light microscopic and ultrastructural levels revealed differences in the effects of natural and prepared iodine water under similar iodine-ion concentration (14 mg/l). The varieties seem to result from the presence of ion-salt base in the natural water.

[Paragangliomas of the chiasma and sellar area].

The article describes five cases of rare cerebral tumors, paragangliomas of the chiasma-sellar area. Their clinical course characteristically begins with the appearance of endocrine disorders manifested by progressive hypophyseal insufficiency. Analysis of the clinical and X-ray signs of paragangliomas of the chiasma-sellar region show these to be similar to adenomas of the hypophysis. A specific feature of paragangliomas of the chiasma-sellar area is their rich vascularization, which is demonstrated by angiography and verified in all cases during operation. The rich vascularization of paragangliomas of the chiasma-sellar area calls for their rapid and complete removal so as to reduce the loss of blood and provide reliable hemostasis.

[The characteristics of the action of potable mineral waters on the postradiation recovery processes in rats receiving different doses of gamma irradiation].

In experiments on 54 white noninbred male rats it was shown that drinking mineral water containing sulphate, calcium and sodium ions (Moskovskaia mineral water) activates postradiation regenerative processes in the thymus and the liver and normalizes functional activity of CCS-system in blood plasma if it was taken 28 days after whole-body 1 Gy gamma-radiation. This positive effect was less marked after 5 Gy gamma-radiation. Silicon and boron containing mineral water under the above conditions proved less effective.
