[Apitherapy and problems in treating gastroenterology patients].

The disputable questions demanding the urgent decision on the development and specification of the recommendations and contraindications for using the honey and other beekeeping products in the therapy of various so-called gastroenterologic diseases are presented in this article. The aspects of efficiency and expediency of honey using as monotherapy and in complex combination with medicamentous preparations and (or) with other substances of national medicine are discussed.

[Role of stress in the etiopathogenesis of duodenal ulcer in young patients].

The analysis of the acid-forming function of the stomach, both basal and stimulated with insulin, atropine test, tests for the content of the adrenocorticotropic hormone, somatotropic hormone, thyrotropic hormone, triiodothyronine, thyroxin, cortisol in the blood and the content of gastrin in the blood and gastric juice, activity of the processes of lipid peroxidation, content of ceruloplasmin in the blood, content of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) in the gastric mucosa were conducted in 68 men and 64 women at the age from 18 to 40 years suffering from gastroduodenal ulcer in order to examine the role of stress in ulcer formation. 38 patients with duodenal ulcer took proton pump blockers and antioxidants for 3 years whenever they were in a stress situation. The research revealed that young patients with duodenal ulcer show enhanced sensitivity of parietal cells and sympathoadrenal system to stressful situations, and stimulation of the acid-forming stomach function takes place under the effect of both catecholamines and gastrin. Men can have both Hp-dependent and Hp-independent duodenal ulcers, while women have mostly Hp-dependent duodenal ulcers. Prescription of proton pump blockers of and antioxidants for patients with duodenal ulcer, who are in a stressful situation, reduces the frequency of duodenal ulcer recurrences.

Current status and perspectives of gerontology in Russia.

The current situation of Russian gerontology and its development after 1991 are analyzed in this paper. The potential of Russian gerontology has been evaluated as rather high, and includes not only leading scientific centers (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg), but also many other regions of the country. The main directions of current research in gerontology, the strategy recommended as a base for future research, and medico-social means for health, care and improving the quality of life of the elderly in all its aspects are also discussed.

[Vasoactive effects of femostone in women with metabolic postmenopausal syndrome].

The metabolic postmenopausal syndrome (MPS) is characterized by a complex of metabolic disorders: lipid (76%), purin (56%), calcium-phosphorus (61%). There is also a rise in amplitude of spontaneous platelet aggregation (61%) and fibrinogen levels (78%). Clinically, these phenomena manifest in arterial hypertension and defective cerebral circulation. An estrogen-histogen drug femoston was tried for clinical effectiveness and tolerance in 40 females with MPS. Femoston was used in long-term regimen for 12 months. The response was observed in all the patients, all the above parameters underwent positive changes. The drug was well tolerated, side effects were moderate. No withdrawals occurred.

[Antihypertensive therapy with doxazosin in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus].

AIM: Assessment of the antihypertensive effect of doxazosin, alpha-1 blocker, as well as its action on lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, microcirculation and platelet function in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Doxazosin (tonocardin) treatment was given for 11 weeks to 33 NIDDM patients with concomitant hypertension. The clinical examination comprised evaluation of central hemodynamics, vessels of the fundus of eye, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, renal function, platelet aggregation. RESULTS: Tonocardin produced a fall in the systolic blood pressure (BP) by 14%, in the diastolic BP--by 17%. The 24-h profile of BP, lipid and purine metabolism, microcirculation of the vessels of the fundus of eye also improved. Total peripheral vascular resistance, left ventricular myocardial mass and platelet aggregation. Carbohydrate metabolism remained unchanged. CONCLUSION: Monotherapy with tonocardin (2-8 mg/day) is effective and safe in the treatment of arterial hypertension in NIDDM patients.

[Pharmacodynamic effects of lokren (betaxolol) in 3 month treatment of blood hypertension in elderly patients].

AIM: To study efficacy and tolerance of cardioselective beta-adrenoblocker lokren (betaxolol) in elderly patients with mild and moderate hypertension. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 25 elderly (mean age 70.2 +/- 1.43 years) hypertensive patients received lokren (a single dose of 10 mg daily for 3 months). The examination comprised routine tests, ECG, rheovasography of the ankle, REG of vertebral and carotid arteries, measurements of ejection fraction, total peripheral vascular resistance, myocardial mass, platelet aggregation, external respiration function, blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, beta-lipoprotein. RESULTS: The treatment produced a significant reduction in systolic (by 32.1% and 32.7% in position, respectively) and diastolic pressure (by 14.2 and 11.8%, respectively). Thickness of the posterior wall of the left ventricular myocardium decreased by 7.7%, ejection fraction by 2.9%, total peripheral vascular resistance went up by 11.5%. Spontaneous and induced platelet aggregation declined. There was an insignificant rise in the levels of cholesterol, beta-lipoproteins, triglycerides, glucose. REG and rheovasography data tended to a small rise. External respiration remained unchanged. The need in nitroglycerin reduced by 58%. CONCLUSION: Lokren (betaxolol) can be recommended as effective hypotensive monotherapy of mild and moderate blood hypertension in elderly patients.

[Experience in the use of eiconol (a complex of unsaturated fatty acids) in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus].

Cardiovascular disease is the principal cause of morbidity, functional disability and fatal outcomes in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). The results of administration of eikonol, food additive containing omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids, for 3 months were analyzed for 60 elderly NIDDM patients with ischemic heart disease. A single administration of eikonol leads to a decrease in accumulation of intracellular cholesterol by 15%. Diet eikonol decreased the level of total cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood by 23 and 43%, respectively. Moreover, the higher is the initial value of these parameters, the higher is the effect of the preparation. Eikonol proved to increase the level of lipoproteins of high density, produced a positive trends in NIDDM clinical picture. Food additive eikonol is recommended for wide administration in elderly NIDDM patients with atherogenic dyslipidemias.

[The effects of eiconol in elderly patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus].

A nutritional additive eikonol containing polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-3 was given for a month (8 g/day) to correct vascular complications in 60 patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Eikonol-treated NIDDM patients with diabetic retinopathy, polyneuropathy, angiopathy of the legs combining with arterial hypertension exhibited a reduction in the levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low and very low density lipoproteins cholesterol, a rise in concentrations of high density lipoproteins cholesterol. Blood pressure went down, peripheral vascular resistance and microhemocirculation improved. The findings evidence prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy of eikonol in vascular complications of NIDDM.
