[Measurement of inflammatory activity in chronic rheumatism by blood pretein levels].

Seventy six patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatism were treated with various non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs for 5 to 7 days. The average variations of several serum proteins were studied. The variation of haptoglobin remained nil. Those of other serum proteins remained negative and significantly different from zero, distributed from the greatest to the smallest value of the degree of statistical significance as follow : ceruloplasmin (p < 0.0001), orosomucoide (p < 0.02), fibrinogen (p < 0.02) alpha-2-macroglobulin (p < 0.04) and alpha-1-antitrypsin (p < 0.05). The study of the partial results showed the variability of the degree of significance of the serum proteins in relation to the non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. The practical interest of these serum protein seemed low to measure in the short term, the efficacy of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. Their interest in long term studies remains to be demonstrated compared with that of the measurement of the sedimentation rate by the technic of the sigma E.S.R.

Increase in thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and vascular complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Lipid peroxidation was assessed by measuring the concentrations of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in plasma from 204 Type 2 diabetic patients, relative to 107 controls. The concentrations obtained in diabetic patients (3.08 +/- 0.37 mumol/l) were significantly higher than in controls (2.80 +/- 0.34 mumol/l) (p < 0.0001). Values were also significantly increased in patients with macroangiopathy and/or microangiopathy (3.17 +/- 0.41 mumol/l), relative to patients void of vascular complications (2.92 +/- 0.34 mumol/l) (p < 0.001). Elevated concentrations were independent of the type of vascular complication and their possible associations. In patients without vascular affection, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances were in significantly higher concentrations in hypertensive (3.07 +/- 0.36 mumol/l) than in normotensive (2.87 +/- 0.29 mumol/l) (p < 0.01) patients. There was a correlation between these values and those of total cholesterol (r = 0.46, p < 0.0001) and triglyceride (r = 0.45, p < 0.0001). Statistical analysis by multivariate logistical regression revealed that among the independent factors (TBARS, APO A1, hypertension, age), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances constituted the parameter most strongly linked to the existence of vascular complications. This study has evidenced a lipid peroxidation disorder in non insulin- dependent diabetes mellitus, more marked in patients with vascular affection. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances appear to be an independent marker of vascular complications in Type 2 diabetes.

[Alterations in the proteins found in the amniotic fluid in the course of normal pregnancy. A study carried out by immunoprecipitation tests on the amniotic fluid (author's transl)].

A fluonephelometric technique was used to study the proteins in amniotic fluid. 113 samples taken between the 8th and the 44th week of amenorrhoea from pregnancies without any fetal abnormality were tested. The levels of 8 protein fractions were estimated: albumen, IgG, IgA, alpha 1 antitrypsin, transferrin, orosomucoid, alpha 2 macro-globulin and IgM. 6 of these fractions could be estimated in almost every sample of amniotic fluid, but alpha 2 macroglobulines and IgM could only be found in a few cases. Furthermore, the fractions of the proteins most clearly shown appeared in a parallel way more or less as the total levels of proteins as estimated by Lowry's method.
