Energetic behaviour of mitochondria isolated from rat livers perfused with a perfluorodecalin + N,N-perfluorodiethylcyclohexylamine emulsion.

Rat livers have been perfused with a saline control medium or with a perfluorocarbon emulsion containing perfluorodecalin and N,N-perfluorodiethylcyclohexylamine, and the respiratory rates and transmembrane electrical potentials of mitochondria isolated following perfusion have been evaluated. The results indicate that the perfluorocarbon emulsion used, by providing a good oxygen supply to the perfused liver, allowed to preserve the efficiency of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation.

[Cefoxitin in the preventive treatment of infectious complications in high-risk gastro-jejuno-colic and biliary surgery].

Cefoxitin is a bactericidal beta lactam antibiotic of the cephamycins group, with wide antimicrobial efficacy and active against both aerobes and anaerobes. In this study, 58 patients were divided in four groups according to the site of the disease (stomach, gallbladder and biliary tract, jejunum ileum and colon-rectum). The efficacy of cefoxitin in the prophylaxis of surgical infections was assessed for each group and for all patients. When compared with the combination of antibiotics used previously, cefoxitin led to a reduction of the mean duration of fever (7.2 and 5 days respectively with ampicillin/cloxacillin and lincomycin/gentamycin, 3.2 days with cefoxitin). Cefoxitin also led to a reduction in the incidence of surgical infections (50% with ampicillin/cloxacillin, 9.19% with lincomycin/gentamycin, 8.6% with cefoxitin) and in the incidence of localized surgical infections (29.6%, 20.3%, 8.6% respectively). In this study, cefoxitin has been found to be very useful and well tolerated in the prophylaxis of surgical infections.

[Updating case studies of primary tumors of the mesentery: angiofibroma involving the superior mesenteric artery].

The authors describe a rare case of jejunal mesenteric angiofibroma involving the superior mesenteric artery, referred to them as a clinical finding of an abdominal mass with associated disorders of alimentary transit. A review of the literature reveals the controversies existing to date on the subject of mesenteric neoplasms. In addition to their rare incidence, also confirmed by our personal experience in two surgical centres, intraligamentous abdominal tumours arouse interest owing to the diagnostic difficulties which as a rule hinder a precise pre-operative orientation and to surgical problems of a tactical nature related to the frequent involvement of adjacent anatomical structures.

[Aerospace use of nuclear energy and current biological problems of environmental contamination].

An examination of the danger to man which could result from accidents caused by the use of nuclear energy for space purposes leads to the presentation of parameters establishing levels of environmental contamination by radionucleids from the stratotroposphere. The factors affecting the transport of radioactive pollutants in the atmosphere are indicated and the importance of their deposition and absorption by man through the alimentary canal is emphasised.

[Estimate of the dose in the marrow and the gonads of patients undergoing neoplastic treatment with telecobalt therapy (author's transl)].

Measurements of the doses were carried out on phantoms in order to determine the dose in the marrow and gonads of patients undergoing radio-therapeutic treatment with telecobalt therapy with fixed fields. On average, the dose in the marrow for each treatment resulted to be 2.35 Gy in the male and 5.8 Gy in the female whereas the dose in the gonads for each treatment was on average 0.41 Gy in the male and 0.029 Gy with the exclusion of castrating doses in the female. If one considers the number of patients treated in 1975 with telecobalt therapy with fields (269 men and 309 women) the contribution to the leukaemia dose and to the genetically significant dose can be estimated in approximate terms for the year 1975 in the province of Varese: 0.48 mSv/year and 2.5.10-3 mSv/year respectively. Taking into account the risk factors indicated in publication 26 of the ICRP it can be deduced that in the group of patients treated the expected increase in the number of cases of leukaemia and genetic effects will be 5 and 0.5 respectively.

Description of a simple model for the study of bone calcium metabolism.

A simple model for the study of bone calcium metabolism is proposed. It describes the kinetics of a radioactive tracer in terms of an open single compartment system with an expanding volume for a finite period of time. In addition to the simplicity of the hypotheses introduced, the model is able to give a good description of the biological processes which regulate calcium kinetics. Moreover the functional parameters can be easily calculated, even just graphically. 15 normal subjects and 22 patients affected by various bone diseases were studied. The results were compared with those obtained by using the model proposed by Burkinshaw et al. and the method described by Reeve et al.

[Cholangiocarcinoma in a patient with hepatosplenic atrophy subsequent to thorotrast administration (author's transl)].

A case of cholangiocarcinoma observed in a woman of 38 following carotidographic examination with Thorotrast is described: the presence of radioactivity was also demonstrated by gamma spectrometry. The high mean dose absorbed by the liver (estimated at about 3,000 rad) together with the high relative biological effectiveness of the alpha contribution and the time lapse justify the hypothesis that the neoplasia was caused by irradiation.

[Photographic dosimetry in irradiation of the mediastinum (author's transl)].

Photographic dosimetry was used to ascertain the space distribution of the dose in mediastinal irradiation with sagittal median fields by means of cobalt therapy; the discrepancy between values in tissue-equivalent dummy and homogeneous dummy was minor and is discussed; comparisons are also made with computer values.
