Pigeon allergens in indoor environments: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have measured pigeon allergens in non pigeon coop environments. This study was conducted to determine approximate pigeon dropping allergen concentrations in indoor environments. METHODS: Polyclonal antibody serum was prepared by injecting a rabbit three times with crude wild pigeon dropping extract in 50 mM Tris buffer with Freund's adjuvant. One hundred and fifteen dust samples were collected in a pigeon-infested school, pigeon coops, homes and hospitals and analyzed by a direct competitive pigeon enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: The highest level of pigeon allergen inhibitory activity were recorded in four samples from pigeon coop bedding samples with a median activity of 11.2% relative to pigeon droppings. The second highest level of pigeon allergens was in a pigeon-infested high school with a median or 7.4% activity relative to pigeon droppings. At an entrance underneath pigeon roosts, one sample had a relative inhibitory activity of 62.3%. Pigeon allergen inhibitory levels were generally low in the home and hospital samples, but nevertheless 46 out of 89 of these samples were still above detection limit. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that large concentrations of pigeon allergens can be found in buildings without domestic pigeons such as the pigeon-infested high school.

Trans-10,cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid reduces triglyceride content while differentially affecting peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma2 and aP2 expression in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes.

A series of experiments was conducted using 3T3-L1 preadipocytes as the cell model to determine: (i) whether the triglyceride (TG)-lowering effects of a crude mixture of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers were due to a specific isomer of CLA and the timing of treatment, (ii) if CLA reduced TG content by inhibiting a key regulator of adipogenesis, (iii) if CLA incorporated into either neutral lipid or phospholipid cell fractions, and (iv) whether the effects of CLA treatment were reversible. Trans-10,cis-12 CLA reduced TG content, whereas the cis-9,trans-11 isomer increased TG content compared to vehicle [bovine serum albumin (BSA)] controls. Treatment with 50 microM trans-10,cis-12 CLA during the entire 6 d of differentiation reduced TG content to a greater extent than treatment during either the first 3 d or last 3 d of differentiation. Trans-10,cis-12 CLA treatment of preadipocyte cultures for 48 h increased peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma2 (PPARgamma2) protein expression compared to cultures treated with linoleic acid (LA) or the BSA controls. CLA had no effect on adipose P2 (aP2), a fatty acid-binding protein regulated by PPARgamma2. Both the cis-9,trans-11 and the trans-10,cis-12 isomers of CLA were incorporated into neutral lipids and phospholipids. However, cis-9,trans-11 CLA levels were one- to twofold higher than trans-10,cis-12 CLA levels. Moreover, trans-10,cis-12 CLA treatment reduced cis-11 18:1 concentrations in both neutral lipids and phospholipids while increasing cis-9 18:1 and 18:2 concentrations. Palmitoleic acid (16:1) levels were also lower in the neutral lipid fraction of cultures treated with trans-10,cis-12 CLA. Supplementing trans-10,cis-12 CLA-treated cultures (50 microM) with increasing levels of LA resulted in a dose-dependent increase in TG content compared to cultures treated with 50 microM CLA alone. LA supplementation also prevented some of the morphological changes associated with trans-10,cis-12 CLA treatment as seen with scanning electron microscopy. Treatment with 50 microM trans-10,cis-12 CLA for 6 d decreased PPARgamma2 levels, and supplementation of CLA-treated cultures with LA increased PPARgamma2 levels compared with cultures treated with CLA alone. Taken together, these data indicate that in cultures of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes: (i) trans-10,cis-12 CLA is the TG-lowering isomer of CLA, and its effects are dependent on dose, duration of treatment, and the amount of LA in the cultures; (ii) trans-10,cis-12 CLA treatment alters the monounsaturated fatty acid profile of neutral- and phospholipids of the cultures; and (iii) although acute (2-d) trans-10,cis-12 CLA treatment increased PPARgamma2 protein levels, chronic (6-d) treatment decreased PPARgamma2 levels.

Peer support: a theoretical perspective.

This article offers one theoretical perspective of peer support and attempts to define the elements that, when reinforced through education and training, provide a new cultural context for healing and recovery. Persons labeled with psychiatric disability have become victims of social and cultural ostracism and consequently have developed a sense of self that reinforces the "patient" identity. Enabling members of peer support to understand the nature and impact of these cultural forces leads individuals and peer communities toward a capacity for personal, relational, and social change. It is our hope that consumers from all different types of programs (e.g. drop-in, social clubs, advocacy, support, outreach, respite), traditional providers, and policy makers will find this article helpful in stimulating dialogue about the role of peer programs in the development of a recovery based system.

Platelet-activating factor antagonism and streptokinase-induced hypotension in clinical acute myocardial infarction.

Continuing efforts are being made to improve thrombolytic therapy for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The rate of streptokinase (SK) infusion is commonly limited by the hypotension that is induced. If this could be avoided, an accelerated regimen of SK could be given, analagous to that used for other thrombolytic agents such as alteplase. The mechanism of the SK-induced hypotension is unknown, but there is some evidence that platelet-activating factor (PAF) plays a role. The potent PAF receptor antagonist lexipafant (10 mg) (n=35), or matching placebo (n=36), was administered intravenously over 5 min, in a randomized double-blinded protocol, to consecutive patients about to receive SK for AMI; all but three had inferior MI, because of the preference for strategies other than SK therapy in patients with anterior MI. The rate of infusion of SK was set to give 1.5x10(6) units over 30 min, anticipating significant hypotension. Blood pressure fell sharply over the first 10 min of SK administration. The maximum fall in systolic blood pressure occurred between 8 and 12 min, and averaged 43+/-28 mmHg (mean+/-S.D.) and 40+/-26 mmHg in patients given placebo and lexipafant respectively. Systolic pressure having fallen to <90 mmHg, according to protocol the SK administration rate was reduced in 21 of 36 (58%) of patients given placebo and in 19 of 35 (54%) of patients given lexipafant. The total SK dose was given to all subjects over 40.3+/-17.5 and 40.2+/-13.4 min for the placebo and lexipafant groups respectively. Peak and time integrals of creatine kinase were not different in the two groups. There were no adverse effects attributable to lexipafant. It is concluded that the PAF receptor antagonist lexipafant has no significant effect on SK-induced hypotension and does not facilitate an accelerated regimen of administration.

Bioaerosol emissions from a suburban yard waste composting facility.

The purpose of this study was to assess worker and community exposure to bioaerosols emitted from a suburban yard waste composting facility in northern Illinois, USA. Characterization of on- and off-site viable bioaerosols was undertaken through a total of 288 on- and off-site Andersen samples conducted over 10 sampling days. A total of 46 dust samples and 38 Kramer-Collins spore samples were also collected in this period. Evaluation of the impact of the facility on community bioaerosol concentrations was undertaken by comparing on- and off-site measurements by sampling locations, wind direction, and site activity. On-site concentrations of total spores, Aspergillus/Penicillium spores, total bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, actinomycetes, total particulates, endotoxin, and beta-1,3 glucans were higher than off-site concentrations. Total fungal spores averaged 13,451 spores/m3 (range 5,223-26,067) on-site and 8,772 spores/m3 (range 243-18,276) off-site. Viable bacterial airborne concentrations (in cfu/m3) averaged 11,879 on-site (range 480-78,880) and 3,204 off-site (range 160-17,600). Mean levels of endotoxins (in ng/m3) were 1.94 on-site (range 0.12-6.06) and 0.14 off-site (range 0.01-0.41). Mean levels of beta-1,3 glucans (in ng/m3) were 2.17 on-site (range 0.12-14.45) and 0.24 off-site (range 0.01-0.78). Mean total viable fungi, on the other hand, were higher off-site than on-site (8,651 vs 3,068 cfu/m3). On-site concentrations of total bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and actinomycetes demonstrated a statistically significant pattern of decreasing concentration with distance from pile and higher downwind vs upwind concentrations. Mean on-site concentrations of viable bacteria, viable fungi, and endotoxins were significantly higher during periods of activity compared to periods of no activity. Off-site concentrations of bacteria were also significantly higher during periods of activity compared to no activity. The highest concentrations of total particulates, endotoxin, and beta-1,3-glucans were observed in the personal samplers worn by workers at the facility. One personal sampler measured an Asp f1 exposure of 22.17 ng/m3 during turning activity. Peak exposures to several bioaerosol constituents were sufficiently high to warrant use of respirators by workers during periods of pile activity that lead to dust generation.

Gender, religion, and adolescent patterns of self-disclosure in the divided society of Northern Ireland.

Adolescence is a period when levels of self-disclosure are often lowest. While studies have revealed a clear preference for female targets of disclosure, little research has been carried out on the effects of religion upon disclosure. The impact of religion was of importance in this investigation, given that it was conducted in Northern Ireland, where religion affects almost every aspect of social life. The aim was to ascertain the effects of gender and religious affiliation on adolescent disclosure to friends and strangers. Results revealed that while females were significantly higher disclosers than were males, religion per se did not play a key role. This suggests that even in a highly polarized society, gender is the central determinant of disclosure and is even more important than political identity. The implications of these findings are discussed, particularly with regard to the difficulty young males have in terms of revealing personal information.

A new look at the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor pharmacophore.

Interest in the field of nicotinic receptors has been recently stimulated both by the discovery of the potential therapeutic effects of new agonists, and by the discovery of an association between nicotinic receptor mutations and human neurological diseases. Expression of human receptors in an exogenous system allows their study in isolation. Receptors reconstituted by pairwise injection of either alpha4 or alpha3 with beta2 or beta4 subunits displayed important differences between the resulting receptor subtypes. These results were further compared with those obtained with alpha3:alpha4 fusion proteins. The modifications of either the ligand-binding site in the N-terminal domain or in the ionic pore domain were found to affect the pharmacological properties of the receptors. Finally, the analysis of non-natural derivatives of epibatidine demonstrates how an agonist can be modified to be selective at one receptor subtype or to become an antagonist. These data are well explained on the basis of a three-state allosteric model.

Conjugated linoleic acid suppresses triglyceride accumulation and induces apoptosis in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes.

Four sets of experiments were conducted to examine the influence of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers during proliferation and differentiation of cultures of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes using physiological culturing conditions. Cultures treated with either albumin [bovine serum albumin (BSA) vehicle] or linoleic acid (LA) served as controls. For the proliferation study (Expt.1), cells were cultured in media containing a crude mixture of CLA isomers or pure LA at 0, 10, 50, or 200 microM for 4 d. Preadipocyte proliferation (cell number, 3H-thymidine incorporation into DNA) decreased as the level of CLA increased in the cultures. In contrast, LA had no impact on DNA synthesis. In Experiment 2a, postconfluent cultures were grown in media containing a crude mixture of CLA isomers or LA at 0, 10, 50, or 200 microM for the next 6 d. Postconfluent cultures supplemented with 50-200 microM CLA had less triglyceride (TG) and were smaller in size than cultures supplemented with similar amounts of LA. In Experiment 2b, postconfluent cultures supplemented with 200 microM of a crude mixture of CLA isomers or LA were harvested on days 1, 3, 6, or 9. Differences in TG content of cultures supplemented with 200 microM CLA compared to control and LA-supplemented cultures became apparent after 3 d of culture. Experiments 3a and 3b examined whether the fatty acid vehicle (BSA vs. ethanol) or the vitamin E status (+/-0.2 mM alpha-tocopherol) of the cultures altered CLA's impact on preadipocyte TG content. In Experiment 3a, ethanol-treated cultures had more TG than non-ethanol-treated cultures regardless of the fatty acid treatment. In Experiment 3b, cultures treated with 100 microM of either a crude mixture of CLA or the trans-10,cis-12 CLA isomer without supplemental vitamin E for 6 d had less TG than CLA-treated cultures containing vitamin E. In Experiment 4, postconfluent cultures were grown in media containing 100 microM LA or either a crude mixture of CLA isomers or the trans-10,cis-12 CLA isomer for 24-96 h to assess CLA's influence on the cell cycle and indices of apoptosis. Cultures treated with 100 microM CLA for 24-96 h had more apoptotic cells than BSA- or LA-treated cultures. Furthermore, cultures treated for 48 h with CLA had fewer cells in the S-phase than control cultures. The effects of the trans-10,cis-12 CLA isomer were more pronounced than those of the crude mixture of CLA isomers. These data suggest that CLA may exert its antiobesity effects by inhibiting proliferation, attenuating TG content, and/or inducing apoptosis in (pre)adipocytes.

Association of asthma symptoms and severity with indoor bioaerosols.

BACKGROUND: In this study, repeated measurements were made of levels of mold spores, bacteria, and dust-mite allergens over a 7-month period in the homes of asthmatics, and relationships with measures of asthma severity were evaluated. METHODS: A sample of 57 asthmatic individuals, living in 44 homes in East Moline, Illinois, and nearby communities, participated in a panel study. The homes were visited up to nine times during the study to collect air and dust samples. Asthma severity indicators were derived from questionnaire data and from the daily health records from the panel study. Associations between indoor levels of mold spores, bacteria, and dust-mite allergens were tested with several asthma severity indicators. RESULTS: There was evidence of associations between all asthma severity measures and levels of total and gram-negative bacteria, but mold-spore abundance was associated only with emergency room (ER) visits for asthma. No significant associations were found with house-dust-mite allergen and any of the asthma severity indicators, but the levels of dust-mite allergen were low, with median concentrations of 0.18 microg/g dust Der f 1 and 0.19 microg/g dust Der p 1. CONCLUSIONS: Some evidence was found for associations of increased concentrations of gram-negative bacteria and mold spores with asthma severity, particularly with ER visits. No association was found between house-dust-mite allergen and asthma severity indicators; however, the mite-allergen levels in the study homes were generally well below the proposed threshold level of 2 microg/g dust.

Indoor air quality in a middle school, Part II: Development of emission factors for particulate matter and bioaerosols.

A middle school (grades 6 to 8) in a residential section of Springfield, Illinois, with no known air quality problems, was selected for a baseline indoor air quality survey. The study was designed to measure and evaluate air quality at the middle school with the objective of providing a benchmark for comparisons with measurements in schools with potential air quality problems. The focus of this article is on the development of emission factors for particulate matter and bioaerosols. The school was characterized as having no health complaints and good maintenance schedules. Four indoor locations including the cafeteria, a science classroom, an art classroom, the lobby outside the main office, and one outdoor location were sampled for various environmental comfort and pollutant parameters for one week in February 1997. Integrated samples (eight-hour sampling time) for respirable and total particulate matter, and short-term measurements (two-minute samples, three times per day) for bioaerosols were collected on three consecutive days at each of the sampling sites. Continuous measurements of carbon dioxide were logged at all locations for five days. Continuous measurements of respirable particulate matter were also collected in the lobby area. A linear relationship between occupancy and corresponding carbon dioxide and particle concentrations was seen. A completely mixed space, one compartment mass balance model with estimated CO2 generation rates and actual CO2 and particulate matter concentrations was used to model ventilation and pollutant emission rates. Emission factors for occupancy were represented by the slope of emission rate versus occupancy scatter plots. The following particle and bioaerosol emission factors were derived from the indoor measurements: total particles: 1.28 mg/hr/person-hr; respirable particles: 0.154 g/hr/person-hr; total fungi: 167 CFU/hr/person-min; thermophilic fungi: 35.8 CFU/hr/person-min; mesophilic fungi: 119 CFU/hr/person-min; total bacteria: 227 CFU/hr/person-min; gram-negative bacteria: 69.5 CFU/hr/person-min; gram-positive bacteria: 191 CFU/hr/person-min; Aspergillus: 17.0 CFU/hr/person-min; Penicillium: 161 CFU/hr/person-min; and yeasts: 16.4 CFU/hr/person-min.

Phase II multicenter clinical study of the platelet-activating factor receptor antagonist BB-882 in the treatment of sepsis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the platelet-activating factor receptor antagonist BB-882 in the treatment of patients with sepsis. DESIGN: Double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, multi-centered study. SETTING: Thirty-four European intensive care units. PATIENTS: One hundred fifty-two patients with clinical suspicion of infection and a mean APACHE II score between 15 and 35 in the 24 hrs before entry into the trial. INTERVENTIONS: Patients received either a loading dose of 4 mg of BB-882 on the first day, followed by an intravenous infusion of 96 mg/24 hrs for up to 120 hrs, or placebo. MEASUREMENTS: Hemodynamic, respiratory and oxygen transport variables, blood lactate concentrations, interleukin-6, interleukin-8, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, soluble TNF receptor concentrations, organ failure score, 28-day mortality rate, Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score within 24 hrs of entry. RESULTS: Sixty-nine patients (42 male, 27 female) received placebo and 83 (59 male, 24 female) received BB-882. Patients ranged in age from 16 to 89 yrs (mean, 60 yrs). No important differences existed between the two groups in terms of gender distribution, age, or initial APACHE II score. Sepsis was identified as Gram-positive in 49 patients, Gram-negative in 40, mixed in 37, and unknown in 26. No important differences were shown in hemodynamic, respiratory, or oxygen transport variables between groups during the study. Organ failure scores were similar in the two groups throughout the study. Cytokine concentrations were not significantly different in the two groups. Within 28 days of entering the study, 75 patients died, including 31 (45%) in the placebo group and 44 (53%) in the treatment group, p = .32. The median time to death in the placebo group was 6.0 days, and in the treatment group, it was 4.5 days (p = .30). CONCLUSION: Treatment of sepsis with the platelet-activating factor antagonist BB-882 offers no advantage over placebo on survival, hemodynamic status, respiratory function, or organ failure scores.

A double-blind placebo-controlled study of an infusion of lexipafant (Platelet-activating factor receptor antagonist) in patients with severe sepsis.

Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is a potent endogenous proinflammatory mediator implicated in the pathogenesis of septic shock. A double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial of an intravenous PAF receptor antagonist (lexipafant) was conducted with 131 adult Thai patients with suspected severe sepsis (66 of whom had positive blood cultures). Detailed serial clinical, biochemical, and cytokine measurements were performed. Lexipafant treatment was well tolerated. The 28-day mortality in the lexipafant group (61.4%) was similar to that in the placebo group (62.6%). There was also no evidence that lexipafant affected clinical or biochemical measures of disease severity or the profile of sequentially measured plasma cytokine levels. PAF may not have an important role in the pathogenesis of severe sepsis.

No evidence for linkage between schizophrenia and markers at chromosome 15q13-14.

Freedman et al. [1997: Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 94:587-592] reported linkage in nine multiplex schizophrenia families to markers on chromosome 15, using impaired neuronal inhibition to repeated auditory stimuli (P50), a neurophysiological deficit associated with schizophrenia, as the phenotype. The highest LOD score obtained (5.3 at theta = 0) was for marker D15S1360 mapped to chromosome 15q13-14, less than 120 kb from the alpha7-nicotinic receptor (CHRNA7) gene. The study also reported a small positive LOD score for D15S1360 when examined for linkage to the schizophrenia phenotype. Following these findings, we examined three polymorphic markers (D15S1360, L76630, and ACTC) on chromosome 15q13-14 near the CHRNA7 gene for linkage to schizophrenia, using 54 pedigrees from an independent study. Alleles for these three markers were genotyped and analyzed using parametric and nonparametric methods. No LOD score above 1.00 was obtained for any marker, and affected sib-pair analysis likewise showed no evidence for linkage. We conclude that in our families the region around the CHRNA7 locus does not contain a major locus for susceptibility to schizophrenia.

Chicago community-based asthma intervention trial: feasibility of delivering peer education in an inner-city population.

The most effective means of educating children with asthma and their families has not been clearly demonstrated in previous studies. Peer education is uniquely suited to the complex problems encountered in underserved populations. The purpose of this study was to show the feasibility of delivering a peer education program for children with asthma and the effect of the program on indoor allergen levels in an inner-city population in Chicago. Overall, the program was well received. Baseline allergen levels were consistent with some previous studies in showing low levels of mite allergens and high levels of cockroach allergens, with 79.6% of samples having levels > 8 U/g. A total of 28.2% of samples had cat allergen levels > 2 microg/g, although only 9.7% of homes had cats, confirming previous reports that cat allergen is ubiquitous. Mold levels were seasonal, with the highest levels in the summer. Results from this study suggest that intervention programs should focus more on elimination of cockroaches than was previously appreciated, while minimizing the use of pesticides, and on identification of the sources of cat allergen. Structural and psychosocial issues in homes need to be addressed in future studies. This study has demonstrated the feasibility of delivering peer education in a inner-city population and highlighted the need for comprehensive intervention strategies addressing complex issues facing underserved neighborhoods.

Apoptosis and carcinogenesis.

Apoptosis has long been known to be effected through a common sequence of structural changes, despite the wide variety of initiating stimuli. These common structural events appear to depend upon activation of a set of enzymes (caspases) which direct a strongly conserved, terminal effector pathway. The regulation of this pathway, and in particular its coupling to DNA damage, appears to be critical in maintaining at low levels the number of mutated cells within tissues. The frequency with which tumours (experimental and human) bear deficiency in p53 or MSH-2 repair function may indicate the importance of these proteins in coupling DNA damage to apoptosis.

Evaluation of a statewide bicycle helmet law via multiple measures of helmet use.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate an Oregon law requiring bicyclists younger than 16 year to wear a helmet and to compare methods of measuring helmet use. DESIGN: Four prelaw and postlaw statewide helmet use surveys: (1) statewide observations, (2) middle school observations, (3) classroom self-report surveys, and (4) a statewide adult telephone survey. SETTING: Oregon. SUBJECTS: Statewide observations, 3313 child bicyclists at 13 sites; middle school observations, 995 child bicyclists at 33 randomly selected middle schools; classroom self-report surveys, fourth, sixth, and eighth graders in 448 classrooms (ie, 8955 students) before the law was effected and 456 classrooms (ie, 9811 students) after the law was effected in 66 randomly selected schools; and statewide telephone survey, 1219 randomly called parents of 1437 children younger than 16 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Prelaw and postlaw helmet use and ownership and knowledge and opinion about the law. RESULTS: Observed helmet use among youth was 24.5% before the law was effected and 49.3% after the law was effected. School-observed use increased from 20.4% to 56.1%. Classroom survey self-reported "always" use of helmets increased from 14.7% to 39.4%; reported use on the day of the survey increased from 25.8% to 76.0%. Telephone survey-reported "always" helmet use increased from 36.8% to 65.7%. Younger children and girls were more likely to use helmets. Most students (ie, 87.8%) and parents (ie, 95.4%) knew about the law; however, only 42.6% of children thought the law was a good idea. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that (1) the law increased helmet use; (2) although use estimates differ, all helmet surveys showed similar degrees of prelaw and postlaw change; and (3) half of child bicyclists are still not wearing helmets, indicating a need for additional promotion of helmet wearing. Laws seem to be an effective way to increase helmet use.

Relation between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and the production of nitric oxide (NO) in severe sepsis.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between the levels of pro-inflammatory [interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-8, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha)], anti-inflammatory cytokines [IL-10, soluble TNF receptor type I (TNFsrI), TNFsrII], and the production of nitric oxide (NO) during a 1-week period in 23 patients with severe sepsis. The highest levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and nitrate, the stable metabolite of NO, were found during the first day after inclusion and gradually declined thereafter. Detectable levels of IL-10, TNFsrI and TNFsrII were present in all patients at study entry but did not significantly change during the study period [analysis of variance (MANOVA); P > 0.05]. Serum nitrate levels correlated significantly with both pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha) as well as anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, TNFsrI, TNFsrII). Serum nitrate levels over time were higher in patients with positive blood cultures (n = 4) (MANOVA; P < 0.005), as compared to patients without proven bacteraemia. These data support the concept of an acute phase of sepsis that is characterized by an excess of pro-inflammatory cytokines, while anti-inflammatory cytokines are predominantly present during the secondary phase. The present findings indicate that pro-inflammatory cytokines are related to the induction of excessive NO production during the first phase of sepsis and that reduction of NO production occurs during the secondary phase. This may suggest that anti-inflammatory cytokines are able to diminish the production of NO in patients with severe sepsis.
