Sweet syndrome with involvement of the female genital tract.

Acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis, otherwise known as Sweet syndrome, usually occurs in women after prior respiratory infections. The first case of Sweet syndrome with involvement of the female genital tract is reported here. The woman recovered completely, and no evidence of other underlying disease has appeared.

Role of gastrin in vagally-stimulated pancreatic secretion.

In an attempt to clarify the contribution of antral gastrin to the vaginal stimulation of pancreatic secretion, we have measured the effect of total excision of the antral mucosa on pancreatic secretion induced by electrical vagal stimulation in eight anesthetized dogs. Stimulation was done before excision of the mucosa, and after excision, with and without a gastrin background. Mucosal excision reduced pancreatic volume response to 25% and pancreatic protein response to 32% of the respective responses obtained before excision; gastrin release in response to vagal stimulation was completely abolished. With a gastrin background (0.5 microgram/kg-hr of synthetic human gastrin-17-I), which resulted in serum gastrin concentrations higher than those obtained by vagal stimulation before excision of antral mucosa, the pancreatic volume and protein response showed only partial restoration. These studies provide evidence that vagal pancreatic secretion is only partially gastrin-dependent, and that other antral factors, probably vagally modulated intramural cholinergic pathways, are involved.

Indium 111 autologous tagged leukocytes in the diagnosis of intraperitoneal sepsis.

We report the results of a new test, indium oxine in 111 scanning, in the diagnosis of postoperative infection. Indium 111 was used to label autologous polymorphonuclear leukocytes, which when reinjected migrate to sites of infection, inflammation, or both. Standard scintigraphy localizes the labeled inflammatory cells at these sites. Sixty-six scans were performed in 43 surgical patients. Thirty-seven scans were categorized as true-positive; 19 scans were categorized as true-negative. Therefore, the accuracy rate was 85%. Two scans (3%) in one patient represented false-positive results. Two scans (3%) were positive for inflammation but there was no infection present; this group was denoted as equivocal. Six scans (9%) were false-negative; false-negative scans are more likely in old lesions with poor blood supply and in areas that overlap regions of normal uptake. The noninvasive nature of the test, high accuracy rate, and ease of administration make it a potentially useful tool in the diagnosis of postoperative infection.

Pheochromocytoma and fibromuscular hyperplasia.

We have described a case which documents two possible surgical correctable causes for hypertension in a 55-year-old white man. Preoperative renal arteriograms and renal vein renin determinations suggested the possibility of renal artery stenosis due to fibromuscular hyperplasia. At operation, a pheochromocytoma was found in the left suprarenal area. The presence of two unusual causes for hypertension in a single patient suggests that more than one remediable cause of hypertension should at least be considered in a given hypertensive patient.

The electric image in Gnathonemus petersii.

We review modelling and experimental work dealing with the mechanisms of generation of electric image. We discuss: (1) the concept of electric image in the context of the reafference principle; (2) how waveform codes an impedance related qualia of the object image, referred to as "electric colour"; (3) that some characteristics of the spatial profiles generated by pre-receptor mechanisms are suitable for edge detection; (4) which parameters of the spatial profiles provide information for distance discrimination; (5) that electric images are distributed representations of the scene.

An efficient procedure for traceless solid-phase synthesis of N,N'-substituted thioureas by thermolytic cleavage of resin-bound dithiocarbamates.

A novel and efficient procedure which is compatible with high-throughput process for the traceless solid-phase synthesis of thioureas is described. In the presence of carbon disulfide, Merrifield resin reacts with an amine to give a resin-bound dithiocarbamate moiety. Heating this supported dithiocarbamate in the presence of a second amine at 60 degrees C for 12 h led to the formation of the thiourea with the release of benzylthiol bound to the resin. This process allows the preparation of N,N'-di- and trisubstituted thioureas in good yields and with satisfactory purity. Furthermore, the mild reaction conditions involved are compatible with many functional groups.

[The development of the torsion angle of the tibia-fibula unit in various age groups].

We studied the torsion angle of the tibiofibular unit in both lower legs of 1588 schoolchildren of both sexes (998 girls and 590 boys), aged between 3 and 18 years divided into four age groups. The torsion angle of the tibio-fibular unit progressively increases with age. Stable values were measured only in the 11-15 years age group. Statistically significant differences of the torsion angle between one lower limb and the other were detected in the girls of the 6-10 and 11-15 age groups, and in the boys of the 6-10 age groups.

In vitro study of the response of rumen microorganisms to different doses of abierixin, a new antibiotic ionophore, according to the nature of nitrogen supplies.

An in vitro study on a "batch" type fermentation system was carried out in order to evaluate the effect of different doses of a new ionophore antibiotic, abierixin, on the rumen fermentation parameters. The reaction of microorganisms to the antibiotic were determined according to the nature of the nitrogen introduced into the fermenter: ammonium sulfate alone or complemented with protein nitrogen (peanut meal or a mixed pelleted feed). This molecule had a protective effect with respect to dietary protein degradation in the rumen, at the lowest dose tested (13.5 ppm). The dose (8 ppm) used with the pelleted feed led to a decrease in the protein degradability but the significant threshold was not reached. Abierixin failed to modify bacterial ammonia uptake with the nitrogen sources used in our experiment. In addition, it had no effect on rumen fermentations. It neither led to any alteration in the total VFA and gas productions during 6 hours of fermentation, nor on their molar composition, whatever the dose of antibiotic used and the nitrogen source considered.
