Functional anatomy of the medial collateral ligament of the ankle joint.

The calcaneotibial and posterior talotibial ligaments slacken and the naviculotibial ligament tightens as the ankle plantarflexes; the reverse occurs in ankle extension. The naviculotibial ligament increases its length and the posterior talotibial ligament relaxes in abduction. The cutting of the posterior talotibial ligament repercutes on other parts of the medial collateral ligament. The cutting of other parts of the medial collateral ligament produces very little change on the posterior talotibial ligament. When the whole medial collateral ligament is severed, there is a lateral displacement of the talus. This may be important in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a torn medial collateral ligament.

5,6 Dihydro-5'-azacytidine (DHAC) restores androgen responsiveness in androgen-insensitive prostate cancer cells.

INTRODUCTION: The androgen resistance of some prostate cancer patients may be due to transcriptional inactivation of the androgen receptor (AR) gene catalyzed by cytosine DNA methyltransferase. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To determine if an inhibitor of cytosine DNA methyltransferase, 5,6-dihydro-5'-azacytidine (DHAC), can restore the androgen sensitivity in androgen-insensitive human prostate carcinoma cell lines in vitro, we cultured androgen-insensitive (PC3, DU-145, and TSUPrl) and androgen-responsive (LNCaP) cells with subcytotoxic concentrations (< or = IC50) of DHAC for 14 days followed by exposure to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) or to hydroxyflutamide for 7 days. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Only DHAC-treated DU-145 cells showed growth stimulation by 10(-11) to 10(-9) M DHT and a partial inhibition by 10(-5) and 10(-6) M hydroxyflutamide. However, since DU-145 is the only cell line tested that is known to have a hypermethylated AR promoter, the observed effects may be due to a partial demethylation of the AR by DHAC. Our data provide an evidence that cytosine DNA methyltransferase inhibitors can restore androgen responsiveness in androgen-refractory tumor cells, which are then sensitive to growth inhibition by antiandrogens.

Primary immunodeficiencies in the USSR: update of a nine-year study.

During the period January 1982-January 1991, 372 patients with primary immunodeficiencies from all the regions of the USSR were detected in a specialized unit. Incidence of main clinical manifestations and death rates are reported. Differences with other national registries are discussed.

Two new isolants of infectious bronchitis virus with polyvalent immunogenicity.

The immunizing capacity of two new field isolants of avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) was tested in vivo. Chickens vaccinated with either isolant resisted challenge with 6 serotypes of IBV, including some of the types most commonly isolated from chickens. The two new isolants, identified herein as California "G" and California "S," appear to be immunologically different from each other and from the other 6 types tested. The polyvalent immunogenicity of both G and S is noteworthy, and potentially a very promising characteristic for the development of effective vaccines. The immunogenicity is slightly better for G than for S, but both are still pathogenic for chickens. Therefore, they should be attenuated before being used as vaccines.
