Lipocortin inhibition of extracellular and intracellular phospholipases A2 is substrate concentration dependent.

Hydrolysis of Escherichia coli membrane phospholipids by pancreatic phospholipase A2 was inhibited by lipocortin from human monocytes in a substrate dependent manner. Inhibition was completely overcome at substrate concentrations above 250 microM. Lipocortin also inhibited partially purified preparations of two intracellular phospholipases A2 isolated from rat liver mitochondria and rat platelets when these enzymes were assayed at low micromolar concentrations of phosphatidylethanolamine. Inhibition gradually decreased with increasing substrate concentrations both for pancreatic and platelet phospholipase A2 and became completely abolished above 15 and 50 microM phosphatidylethanolamine, respectively.

Modified latissimus dorsi and teres major transfer for external rotation deficit of the shoulder.

Variable impairment occurs following birth associated brachial plexus injury. Muscle transpositions have evolved in response to patient need for functional reconstruction. Loss of external rotation limits the ability to perform activities with the arm in an overhead position. A modification of the combined latissimus dorsi and teres major transfer is described by means of which increased excursion of the transfer may be achieved.

Reversal of cholera toxin-induced secretion in rat ileum by luminal berberine.

The effect of luminal berberine hydrochloride concentration on cholera toxin-induced water and electrolyte secretion and on normal water and electrolyte transport was determined in vivo in the cannulated, perfused rat ileum using [14C]polyethylene glycol as a nonabsorbable marker. Berberine reduced the cholera toxin-induced secretion of water, Na, Cl, and calculated residual ion (primarily HCO3) in a concentration-dependent manner. The effect of berberine on cholera toxin-induced ileal secretion was evident 60-80 min after exposure and was reversed 60-80 min after removal of berberine from the perfusate. Mild changes in mucosal histology (villous tip edema) due to cholera toxin were also reversed by berberine. Berberine did not significantly alter normal ileal water and electrolyte transport.

MMPI profiles and code types of responsible and non-responsible criminal defendants.

Compared MMPI profiles and two-point code types of criminal defendants (N = 50) who were pleading a defense of "not responsible due to mental disease or defect." In examining the mean, non-K corrected raw scores, no significant differences were found between those defendants determined responsible and those determined non-responsible on individual MMPI scales. A sign test was computed, treating the clinical scales as matched pairs, and a significant difference was found; the non-responsible group profile was more elevated. Two-point codes were determined for each group member, and the percentages of individuals within each group who had the same two-point codes were calculated. A chi-square test was significant, which indicates that there is an association between the classification of an individual and the two-point code produced. The 8-7 code type was modal for the responsible group, while the 8-6 code type was modal for the non-responsible group. These findings are discussed, and future research directions in this area are suggested.

Complementation of adeno-associated satellite virus (AAV) by temperature-sensitive mutants of adenovirus type 31.

Temperature-sensitive (ts) matants of human adenovirus type 31 were able to complement adeno-associated satellite virus (AAV) antigen production in both HEK and KB cells at both permissive and non-permissive temperatures. However, mutant ts 94, an adenovirus 31 mutant which produces apparently normal amounts of structural protein and DNA but is defective in maturation, was significantly inhibited in its ability to potentiate AAV infectivity at the non-permissive temperature. Normal AAV DNA and adenovirus DNA were isolated from co-infections with AAV and mutant ts 94 at the non-permissive temperature. We suggest that an adenovirus-coded maturation function common to both adenovirus and AAV maturation is defective in the ts 94 system.
