Sex-linked values of E-rosette forming lymphocytes in mother and newborn.

The T-cell marker of spontaneous rosettes with sheep erythrocytes was determined in 34 normal term-deliveries on the peripheral lymphocytes of the mother and the corresponding cord-blood lymphocytes of the newborn, immediately after delivery. A consistently lower level of E-rosette forming lymphocytes was observed in male as compared to female newborns in different parity groups and in twin deliveries. When the mean values were calculated for corresponding E-rosettes of maternal and newborn lymphocytes in each group (female and male group of offsprings) they were nearly identical.

Cellular and humoral immune aspects in mixed wife-husband leukocyte cultures in spontaneous abortions.

The possible role of feto--maternal cell--and humoral mediated immunological reactions, in mixed wife-husband one- and two-way stimulated leukocyte cultures (MWHLC) in autologous serum were investigated in a comparative study of 27 cases of normal and abnormal pregnancies (8 control and 19 cases of spontaneous abortions). Sera obtained from women after spontaneous abortions had a significantly higher stimulating effect on MWHLC than sera from women with normal pregnancies. In one-way stimulated MWHLC in cases of abortions, this effect was evident on maternal responding cells incubated with mitomycin treated paternal leukocytes.

Incontinentia pigmenti.

Four new cases of incontinentia pigmenti are presented, including chromosome studies of one family. An increased number of chromosome breakages was found in the blood of affected as well as unaffected members of this family.

Role of children's sex in mixed mother-child lymphocyte culture reactivity.

One-way mixed mother-child lymphocyte cultures (MMCLC) 4 to 20 years after the last delivery were studied with maternal responding and children's or fathers' stimulating cells (MMFLC) in 14 multiple child families with 18 sons and 20 daughters. HLA antigen typing locus A, B, DR was performed for all family members. As reported previously for newborn cells, a significantly increased maternal response could be observed in MMCLC with male as compared to female children's stimulating cells. Although the number of cases studied was small, it seems that the increased stimulating effect of male children's cells could also be observed when MMCLC values from children of different sex, and identical A,B,DR haplotypes were compared. In contrast to this, A,B,DR haploidentical children of the same sex seem to have a similar stimulating effect on the maternal response in MMCLC. The results suggest that male children's Y-chromosome-correlated minor histocompatibility antigens may additionally stimulate the maternal immune response in MMCLC.

Ovarian dysgerminoma, investigations on cell-and humoral-mediated immunologic reactions.

A 17-year-old girl with repeated ovarian dysgerminoma is described. Postoperative immunologic investigations prior to irradiation showed a transient increased cell--an humoral--mediated immunologic responsiveness of the patient for approximately 2 1/2 months. After irradiation, a markedly defective response to PHA was observed which improved when reexamined 11 months later. The patient is well 22 months after the second operation.
