[Morphological changes in the internal organs in experimental staphylococcal sepsis].

In 200 albino rats pathomorphological changes of different organs were studied during experimental staphylococcal sepsis (from 3 to 45 days of the disease), caused by intramuscular injection of 0.15-0.20 ml suspension of microbes (10(15) per ml) in 10% CaCl2 solution. Local piemic focus occurred first, followed by bacteremia and generalized sepsis manifest with secondary piemic foci in the viscera. In the cytologic imprints early stages of piemic metastatic focus formation in liver, kidneys and other organs were demonstrated. Microcirculatory, dystrophic changes, as well as lymphoid system suppression were revealed. The authors come to the conclusion that all the signs are similar to general morphologic criteria of sepsis in humans.

[Inhibition of platelet aggregation by dinitrosyl iron complexes with low molecular weight ligands].

The dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNIC) with thiosulphate, cysteine or phosphate were shown to inhibit in vitro (in citrate plasma) the human platelet aggregation induced by ADP, collagen or adrenaline. This effect cannot be explained by the toxic action of DNIC on the platelet membrane, since DNIC-pretreated platelets are capable of aggregating under the action of 10(-8) M/ml of phorbol ester, which is known to cause direct activation of protein kinase C. The antiaggregatory activity of DNIC exceeds that of Na-nitroprusside and seems to be due to nitric oxide capable to activate guanylate cyclase of platelets. Using the EPR method, it was shown that addition of DNIC to platelet-enriched plasma results in a rapid transfer of Fe(NO)2 groups to the coupled RS(-)-groups proteins of plasma and, apparently, of platelet membrane proteins. These protein DNIC seem to be the source of NO which inhibits human platelet aggregation.

[Experimental staphylococcal sepsis].

Experimental staphylococcal sepsis has been examined in the model suggested by the authors. Staphylococcus aureus culture in a 10% CaCl2 solution was injected intramuscularly to 230 adult albino rats. Fundamental signs of sepsis have been revealed: increased mortality (up to 28% in rats weighing 120-140 g) from day 1 to day 45 after infection, development of local infectious foci, bacteremia, septicemia and septicopyemia. The authors describe severe dystrophic changes in septic emboli and bacterial colonies in different organs.

[Diagnostic role of the determination of the plasma fatty acid spectrum in patients with suppurative surgical infection].

The determination of spectrum of blood plasma fatty acids was performed in patients with purulent surgical infection. The surgical infection was shown to bring about changes in the content of free fatty acids (FFA) in blood plasma. In patients with sepsis undulatory changes in the content of FFA of blood plasma were typical. Sharp and stable decrease of FFA content was observed in patients with critical development of sepsis and lethal outcome. The increased content of FFA was established in patients with septic shock.

[Internal topography of the greater duodenal papilla in cholecystitis and pancreatitis].

Comparative examination of the material obtained from 133 cadavers of patients dying after operations for chronic pancreatitis, pancreonecrosis, and cholecystitis as well as dying suddenly with other diseases (control) was carried out. Stereoscopic microscopy was used to study the internal relief of the mucous membrane of the ampulla and ducts of the major duodenal papilla (MDP), and their step-wise histological examination was performed. From 1 to 10 valves were found in 98% of the control cases. Inflammatory diseases of the gall bladder and pancreas were found to be accompanied by morphological changes in the valve apparatus of MDP. In acute cholecystitis and pancreatitis, edema of the valves and their inflammatory infiltration developed. Courvoisier's gallbladder and chronic recurrent pancreatitis with the duration of the disease up to 3 years resulted in hypertrophic changes in the valves. A disease of longer duration (from 3 to 7 years) was accompanied by deforming changes in the valves with possible subsequent complete atrophy of the valvular apparatus.

[Morphological and cytological characteristics of the burn healing process by various treatment methods].

Morphological and cytological methods were used to study the healing of a burn wound in local isolation wards (an open treatment method) and under ointment bandages (a closed treatment method). Biopsy specimens and imprints from the burn wound surface were taken from 40 patients. During treatment in an abacterial medium, burn wound was rapidly decontaminated, which was a consequence of the appearance in wound exudate of segmented neutrophils with marked neutrophilic granularity. Granulation tissue was formed in the wound cavity at the 5th-7th day after the treatment commencement. During treatment under bandages wound decontamination was extremely slow. For a long time wound exudate shows the predominance of dystrophically changed neutrophils, while granulation tissue in the wound cavity if formed only at the 21st-24th day after the treatment commencement.
