Critical care nurses' role with families: a descriptive study.

The purpose of this descriptive study was to explore the topic of families of critically ill patients from the critical care nurse's perspective. Two hundred twenty-six critical care nurses from one Midwest and three New England hospitals participated in the study. Critical care nurses' responses to questions about family visiting demonstrated variation in their interpretation and enforcement of visiting policies within units and among hospitals. There was overall consensus that family members should play a supportive, although nonparticipative role in the provision of care of their sick family member. More than 75% of the critical care nurses became involved with families in need of emotional support although more than one third of the respondents did not believe they had the requisite knowledge to meet families' psychosocial needs. Among the factors that most influenced critical care nurses' involvement with families were situations relating to the patient's actual or impending death and the nurses' subjective feelings (likes or dislikes) for the patient and family.

[Therapeutic family counseling of schizophrenic patients: rational aspects, concept and practical guidelines].

This paper outlines the controlling principles of practice when working with groups of relatives and/or family members to help schizophrenics to master their lives and to assist in preventing relapses. Emphasis is on the importance of giving valuable assistance to the relatives in their therapeutic role. Questions regarding the conceptual basis, the formation and management and the transfer to the care of self-help groups are dealt with. Finally, the article reviews previous studies on the therapeutic efficiency of self-help and family groups.

Reading disability: a hemispheric asymmetry--information processing approach.

A visual half-field task using a Sperling partial-report paradigm was presented to 10 reading disabled and 10 control subjects (7 to 14 yr. old). The design was very similar to that described in 1977 by Morrison, Giordani, and Nagy, examining performance of letters placed in a circular array at both the perceptual and short-term memory stage. The reading-disabled subjects performed significantly lower on letter-recognition during both the perceptual and short-term memory processing stages. A hemi-field analysis showed a left visual-field performance decrement for the reading-disabled group during the short-term memory stage. Contrary to previous findings which discount a perceptual deficit, this study indicates that such a deficit may exist and is further accentuated during the short-term memory stage by a decrement in right-hemisphere performance.

[Testosterone levels of the plasma of bulls in relation to growth, breed, semen quality and sexual activity].

Using Anderson's method for estimation of testosterone level by competitive protein binding, the authors determined plasma testosterone level in young bulls of three breeds: black and white, and red and white lowland. It was found that in bulls of black and white and red and white lowland breed the testosterone level showed great fluctuations without growing tendency. In charolais bulls, in pubescence, testosterone level was low and did not exceed 1 ng/1 ml, but it systematically increased beginning from the 14th month of life. No correlation of testosterone level with protein and energy intake or with sexual activity was observed in adult bulls (breeders) of black and white lowland breed during 12 months of examination.

Hemispheric asymmetries in children.

A sample of 48 boys was divided into four separate age groups and then presented with a variety of hemispheric specialization tasks. Asymmetries were demonstrated on manual, visual, and auditory tasks, however, the degree of these asymmetries did not change across age groups. The findings suggest that hemispheric specialization as measured by dichotic listening and visual half-field tasks is not likely to change significantly with increased age. In addition, there appears to be a dissociation between visual and auditory perceptual asymmetries.

Twin relationships and depression.

The authors investigated closeness and other variables measuring depression in 22 identical and 13 fraternal twin pairs. Each twin rated him/herself on a two-part questionnaire; part 1 included questions on demographic characteristics and the twin relationship, and part 2, the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, measured depressive symptoms. There was a high degree of agreement across all variables for the total sample, and degrees of depression were comparable to that in the general population. Closeness was found to be inversely correlated with depression. The authors suggest that future studies include other groups (siblings, spouses, etc.) and follow-up data.
