[Deep lobe parotid tumors].

Tumours of the deep lobe, the section of the parotid located within the plane of the facial nerve, are not very frequent. Their diagnosis is difficult and seldom early, and their treatment involves complex technical problems. They evolve in one of two forms: as a tumour of the parapharyngeal space, or as a "dumb-bell" tumour with protrusion in the preauricular zone. Typical cases of both topographical possibilities are presented in this paper.

Adenoma, Pleomorphic↗

[Multiple primary tumors in head and neck oncology].

After establishing the conditions for considering tumours to be of the second primary type, these are classified into groups based on the chronological relation among the different lesions. According to placement, we differentiate some specific locations, which confer special characteristics to each case. The case histories of a series of patients, suffering from multiple primary tumours, are presented, covering each of the categories of the preceding classifications by typical clinical cases. Finally, a discussion is undertaken of the conceptual, diagnostic and therapeutic peculiarities which make these patients all too often difficult to interpret.

Aged↗

[Morphological evaluation of the organ of Corti of guinea pigs submitted to acoustic trauma. II. Correlations of depth and surface lesions].

Adult guinea pigs (250-500 g) were exposed to a chronic wide-band noise, at intensities ranging from 117 to 133 dB(A) at different times. While the first part of this paper concentrated on the surface study of the lesions produced by noise, this second part describes to correlating deep structural damage, based on the study of semi-thin and ultra-thin sections in the same specimen. Finally, a general discussion is presented with respect to the lesions described, both in so far as their specific characteristics as well as the possible mechanisms of damage which determine their formation.

[Study of relations between the peripheral organ of olfaction and the olfactory bulb using anterograde and retrograde axon transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP)].

Utilizing 26 Wistar albino rats, an anterograde and retrograde study has been performed on the connections between the first neuron of the olfactory pathway located in the olfactory epithelium and the second neuron in the glomeruli of the bulb. In the experiment we used horse radish peroxidase (HRP) in free form and combined with wheat lectin. In anterograde transport (epithelium-bulb), the HRP is deposited in preestablished sites in the olfactory epithelium of the nasal fossa. In retrograde transport (bulb-epithelium), HRP combined with wheat lectin is injected by means of a Hamilton microsyringe, glass micropipette and stereotaxic apparatus, in foreseen sites of the glomerular layer of the bulb.

[Surgical approach to the middle ear of the guinea pig].

A total of 40 guinea pigs have been used: in 5 a general anatomical dissection of the temporal bone was utilized; in another 5 guinea pigs a submandibular approach was performed; and in the remaining 30 a superior approach was employed. The submandibular approach begins with an incision of 30 mm inside of and parallel to the inferior border of the mandible , identifying the masseter muscle, the salivary gland, the thymus and posterior belly of the digastric muscle and, finally, the tympanic bulla. In the superior approach a horizontal supra-auricular incision of 15 mm is used which, after dissecting the temporal muscle, permits the access to the external wall of the epitympanum.

[Morphological evaluation of the organ of Corti in the guinea pig subjected to acoustic trauma. I. Surface preparation study].

Adult guinea pigs (250-500 g) were exposed to a chronic wide-band noise, at intensities ranging from 117 and 133 dB(A) at different times. The objective of this first part of the study is, after the lesions are established, to classify and put into order the structural damage produced by noise, using surface preparations observed with the light microscope and specimens prepared for scanning electron microscopy, from the organ of Corti.

[Aspergilloma of the ethmoid sinus].

We present an up-dating of the problem of naso-paranasal infection by different types of aspergillus fungi, attempting to establish clearly the various nosological entities produced by this infectious agent. The principal focus of this paper is the typical presentation of the pseudotumoral form of invasion, or aspergilloma of the ethmoid sinus, in which we studied the following: the vicissitudes involved in diagnosis, the clinical picture and the therapeutic possibilities.

Aspergillosis↗

[The Preyer reflex in the normally-hearing guinea pig].

Our purpose is to find the minimum auditory level for the Preyer reflex in normally-hearing guinea pigs, examining a range of frequencies between 125 and 8,000 Hz. Therefore, a sound source is used which emits pure tone at different frequencies at the intensities which are required and in an open field at the necessary distance. The Preyer reflex turns up in a reliable and constant way in those frequencies between 500 and 6,000 Hz. The most frequent verified auditory level comes to 65-75 dB.

Acoustic Stimulation↗

[Morphological and functional modifications of the acoustic system in golden hamsters with acoustic generalized epilepsy].

We studied the role of the neuronal circuit consisting of the superior olive-cochlear hair cells-auditory nerve complex in the pathophysiology of reflex audiogenic generalized epilepsy in the epileptic golden hamster. A direct role of the auditory function can be assumed from the genetic lesions found in these animals' acoustic system. These animals are a model of the anatomopathologic substrate of a type of hereditary neurosensorial hypoacusia.
