[The role of "valine substitution" in oncogene functioning (a hypothesis)].

A hypothesis presented in the paper discusses the role of valine substitution in p21 protein of H-ras, a product of ras family oncogene. The event was followed by a marked decrease in GTPase activity of the protein and alteration of its function in the cell. Recent results of X-ray structural analysis were compared with the model suggested by the authors earlier. The role of valine substitution in sickle-cell anemia held to be a genetic mechanism of protection against malaria is discussed. Based on similarity of valine substitution in p21 protein and hemoglobin, a relationship between certain forms of malignant transformation and malaria at molecular level is suggested.

[Evaluation of comatose states].

The most informative neurological symptoms allowing the differentiation of 7 phases of consciousness disorders have been identified on the basis of clinico-physiological correlations and mathematical processing. In the first phase of coma the patient cannot be waken up. Addition of muscle atonia characterizes the transfer to the second phase of coma and of bilateral mydriasis indicates the transfer to the third phase. Eye opening in response to sound or pain points to awakening and transfer to the phase of apallitic syndrome. The performance of simple instructions is characteristic of the phase of deep stupor. Responses to questions characterize stupor, and recovery of orientation in the environment indicates clear consciousness.

The prognosis of the outcome of comatose states.

Fifty different signs of coma are considered, and the twelve most important have been used to score the degree and progress of patients in coma, together with brain stem evoked responses. The inclusion of brain stem signs and symptoms is considered to be an important new element in this classification.

[Biotechnological approaches to the creation of antimalarial vaccines].

The authors analyze the latest data on antigen pattern of malaria Plasmodium at various stages of development and extraction of immunogenic determinants contributing to creation of malaria vaccine. Knowledge of the spectra of Plasmodium antigens and stimulants of humoral and cellular immune response in the body will simplify the search for effective biotechnological vaccines able to provide reliable protection against malaria.

[Valine substitution].

The review deals with analysis of the literature data concerning the importance of valine substitution in certain proteins, namely p21 ras and hemoglobin. A model of the active site of p21 protein is discussed in the light of GTPase activities alterations as a result of monoaminoacid substitution in conservative sites of p21 protein. The established relationship between some forms of transformation and Plasmodium falciparum malaria on the molecular level is shown in a new aspect. The widespread opinion that Hb S is valid as the means of malaria resistance is questioned in terms of new molecular data.

[Pharmacologic aspects of AIDS].

The recent findings of the research on the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are reviewed. They provide information about the epidemiological, genetical and morphological features of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and HIV-like viruses, in particular, HTLB-1. Special attention was paid to the pharmacological aspects of preventing AIDS and its spreading among the population. Some new concepts and approaches to the elaboration of therapeutic measures are discussed.

[Brain stem auditory evoked potentials in tumors of the posterior parts of the 3d ventricle and pineal gland].

Dynamic studies (one to six times) of stem generated potentials (SGP) to acoustic stimulation were conducted in 32 patients with tumors of the posterior parts of the third ventricle and the pineal gland. In tumors of this localization, the SGP underwent pathological changes in 90% of cases: the response latency increased, its amplitude reduced more or less coarsely (even to complete abaissement of the peaks), and the time intervals between the peaks increased. Dynamic studies of SGP to acoustic stimulation may help the surgeon in making the diagnosis and prove valuable in appraising the functional state of the stem structures in the postoperative period.
