Non-sliding pins in traction absorbing wiring of fractures: a modified technique.

By using a newly constructed pin instead of Kirschner wires in the traction absorbing wire (TAW) technique, the clinically observed sliding of the Kirschner wires and resulting skin problems are avoided. The pins and the internal fixation technique are described. In order to demonstrate the simplicity and reliability of the technique a follow-up study 7 years after performed surgery is presented. The late results are given of a series comprising the authors' first 10 consecutive cases of closed transverse olecranon fractures treated by this new technique of internal fixation.

Recovery of diaphyseal bone strength after rigid internal plate fixation. An experimental study in the rabbit.

The course of the recovery from the unfavourable effects of a rigid internal fixation plate on the strength of diaphyseal bone, measured as the maximum torque capacity, has been studied in rabbit tibiae. Due attention was paid to the screw holes. On removal of the plate, which had been applied for 12 weeks without prior osteotomy, the bone had decreased in strength by approximately 50 per cent. Following removal of the plate, the bone regained its normal strength after only 6 weeks. The regaining of strength proceeded in a significantly non-linear manner and in accordance with the logistic function: Formula: (See Text).

Material reaction of diaphyseal bone under torsion. An experimental study on dogs.

The formation of microcracks in entire canine diaphyseal bones under torsional loads was studied. The acoustic emission technique was used to register the stress waves which were generated in the bones by crack formation and/or growth. Acoustic emission signals, characteristic of crack formation and/or growth, were recorded exclusively during the non-linear deformation. This is a strong indication of the elastic behaviour of diaphyseal canine bone material.

Non-linear properties of diaphyseal bone. An experimental study on dogs.

The deformation of entire long bones from dogs has been studied in torsion. The load-deformation relationship is non-linear prior to ultimate failure and repeated successively increased loading and unloading in the non-linear range is found to reduce the stiffness of the bone. The non-linearity of the curve is assumed to be due to a change in the geometry of the bone originating from formation of small cracks in the cortex. The bone material of entire long bones from dogs seems to be linearly elastic for all torques.

Torsional strength and geometry of diaphyseal bone. An experimental study on dogs.

A previously presented method for measuring the torsional strength of diaphyseal bones has been used to study the effect of direction of twist upon the torsional strength and stiffness of diaphyseal canine bones. No significant effect of the direction of twist upon the studied properties has been found. The reason for the observed twist direction independence of the torsional strength and stiffness is assumed to be the adaptation of the diaphyseal bone architecture to functional demands.

Atrophy of cortical bone caused by rigid internal fixation plates. An experimental study in the dog.

The cortical atrophy induced by a rigid internal fixation plate on diaphyseal bone was studied on the femora of seven dogs. When the plate, which had been in position for 7 months without previous osteotomy, was removed, a pronounced reduction of the cortical bone was observed in the previously plated section of the diaphyseal bone. The atrophy took the form of loss of cortical bone mainly caused by endosteal resorption with enlargement of the medullary cavity. Neither periosteal resorption nor formation of woven bone under the site of the plate were observed. The process of adaption to the changed stress and strain conditions, caused by the mechanical joint, i.e., implants and bone, was studied by means of a histological technique, and was still in progress after a period of seven months.

Compression fixation of Bennett's fracture.

A procedure that ensures exact reduction and internal fixation of Bennett's fracture is presented. In cases with a large tubercular fragment, the internal fixation is performed with a lag-screw technique. If the fragment is small, a Kirschner wire is used as an implant. A special set of instruments that keeps the reduced fragment in position and guides the implant during the internal fixation process is also described.

Minor components of cannabis resin. VI. Mass spectrometric data and gas chromatographic retention times of components eluted after cannabinol.

Minor components of cannabis resin with longer retention times than that of cannabinol have been analyzed by use of a combined gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer-computer system. The presence of 30 such components has been detected. The data obtained indicate that some of the components are hydroxy derivatives of cannabinoids related to olivetol.

The influence of freezing on the maximum torque capacity of long bones. An experimental study on dogs.

The strength of bone has often been measured in previously frozen samples and the freezing and thawing effect on the strength properties has been considered negligible. By means of a specially constructed torsion machine and a new method for rixing the test bone into the machine, previously frozen bones have been compared to fresh controls. The previously frozen samples were significantly weaker, with an average difference of -- 4.6 per cent.
