A sensitive and specific method for the determination of morphine and codeine is described. The drugs are adsorbed from urine on Amberlite XAD-2 resin at pH 8.5 and eluted from it with organic solvent. After a clean up the residue is separated by high-pressure-liquid-chromatography on reversed phase column using 0.1 M NaH2PO4 in 25% CH3CN/H2O as mobile phase. The eluted drugs are detected by uv-absorption at 230 nm. The method is sensitive, specific and precise.
Long-term exposure (2--9 years) to ozone levels exceeding the Czechoslovak value of mean maximum allowable concentration (0.1 mg . m-3) turned out to induce changes in the exposed persons which can be characterized as initial immune disorders. Higher levels of IgG, IgA, IgM, alpha-1-antitrypsin and transferrin detected in comparison to the reference value in the group of ozone-exposed persons and significantly increased alpha-1-antitrypsin and transferrin levels in comparison to the control group of ore miners can be interpreted as a result of changed adaptation mechanisms in the organism. Analysis of the distribution pattern of the frequency of IgA and IgG changes exceeding the standard deviation shows that the group of ozone-exposed subjects exhibits a higher frequency of these changes than the control group of ore miners. However, the concurrently compared relative numbers of increases and decreases in both groups seem to indicate a considerable interindividual variability in the indicators studied.

After a short comparison of the usual methods we present an own development for the stabilisation of cervical spine fractures. Principle and construction were described. The major part of the publication consists of static calculations concerning the stability of construction part and the interaction to the vertebral substance. We took away the mechanical characteristics from a hitherto unpublished advertisement about the load capacity of cervical vertebral bodies. Detailed calculations will be permitted to be claimed by the author.
The dithizone extraction method has been applied in the determination of lead content in human bones. The lead in 21 samples of fresh vertebrae and ribs from autopsies is compared with the lead content of historical bones of 17 skeletons from 600--800 A.D. The preparation and the direct mineralization of the bones are presented. The lead content detected in the ash of bones is to low compared with the value found by direct wet mineralization of the bones. During the dry ashing process with temperatures of 500 degrees C or higher lead may be lost. For the same person the lead content of rib is always lower than the value found in vertebra. The difference of the lead content of fresh bones and the historical bones is only small. In both groups the lead content in the bones increased with age. Compared with studies of other authors in the time of 1930--1970 the results would suggest that the present intake of lead in accidental selected bones among a population situated in an appointed area is not greater than in the past.
Results of an experimental study of the effect of quartz [DQ 12a1 administered intratracheally to Wistar line rats on the status of their immunological reactivity. The results obtained showed that a significant inhibition of antibody formation to human albumin took place in animals with experimental silicosis in comparison with control rats that were given physiological saline or corundum as established by passive haemagglutination reaction according to Boyden as well as enhancement of the intensity of the delayed-type hypersensitivity to tuberculin. That became manifest by stronger inhibition of macrophage migration from spleen fragments.

Apart from the usual hazards of local anesthesia (toxic reaction due to overdose or intravasal administration, allergic reaction, reaction to the vasoconstrictor), a further risk which should be borne in mind in local anesthesia of the neck region is inadvertent epidural or intrathecal administration of the local anesthetic agent. Depression of respiration or total respiratory failure may occur due to blockade of the superficially located medullary chemoreceptors in the form of a high or total spinal block. The pathogenesis of these incidents is investigated. Respiratory failure is usually reversible and requires immediate and effective therapy (artificial respiration, oxygen administration). The indications for neck anesthesia and their relativity within the entire therapeutic program should be given careful consideration. If (radicular) pain occurs during the injection, or if cerebrospinal fluid is aspirated, the procedure should be interrupted immediately and some time allowed to elapse. In fatal cases the injection channel must be dissected layer-wise in local anemia down to the dural sac. The possible pathway of toxic administration (epidural, subdural, intravasal) must be demonstrated chemically.
