Effect of feeding BHC on the biochemical parameters of blood in rabbits.

Studies were made by feeding 25 mg per kg body weight of BHC to rabbits daily for twelve weeks. BHC in the blood increased progressively without affecting blood pH. The levels of glucose, cholesterol, total proteins and creatinine increased while that of urea decreased in the blood of treated animals. The differences among the control and treated rabbits for these parameters were highly significant as every one microgram per ml accumulation of BHC in the blood, affected a corresponding increase of 1.82 mg/dl glucose, 2.618 mg/dl of cholesterol, 0.02 g/dl of total proteins and 0.13 mg/dl of creatinine, while a decrease of 0.105 mg/dl of urea was observed. The feeding of BHC, therefore, affected these vital biochemical parameters significantly.

Efficient synthesis of human type alpha transforming growth factor: its physical and biological characterization.

Human transforming growth factor type alpha (TGF-alpha) was synthesized by a stepwise solid-phase method with an overall yield of 26%. Synthetic TGF-alpha, consisting of 50 amino acid residues deduced from a cDNA precursor sequence, was purified in a single HPLC step. The homogeneity and primary structure were confirmed by several criteria including Edman degradation and mass spectrometry. Synthetic TGF-alpha was as active as murine epidermal growth factor in binding to the epidermal growth factor receptor and in stimulation of anchorage-dependent and of anchorage-independent growth of normal indicator cells in culture. Synthetic TGF-alpha stimulated plasminogen activator production in A 431 and HeLa cells; the stimulation was similar to that induced by epidermal growth factor. Furthermore, synthetic human TGF-alpha showed similar immunoreactivity when compared with rat TGF-alpha. Thus, the 50-amino acid TGF-alpha is likely to be the bioactive principle produced and secreted by tumor cell lines.

Traditional craniotomies of the Kisii tribe of Kenya.

Our research team has reviewed the practice of traditional craniotomy by the ababari emetwe (craniotomists) of the Kisii tribe of Kenya through interviews with a number of craniotomists and their patients over a period of several years, and through observation of a number of the operations. Cultural background, rationale and indications, techniques and instrumentation, complications, and medical implications of this practice are examined. Our findings are recorded to preserve the details of a cultural phenomenon which is probably destined to disappear within this generation.

Respiratory changes after fractures and surgical skeletal injury.

A study of respiratory function was conducted in a group of patients with fractures and in a group of those on whom total hip arthroplasty had been carried out. This study has particular relevance to 'fat embolism syndrome', the common occurrence of subclinical hypoxaemia after fractures and the symptom-free period of a day or two preceding the onset of the clinical effects of fat embolism. As far as is known, this important early period has not hitherto been studied with modern respiratory physiological methods.

Calcified right ventricular fibroma causing outflow obstruction. Report of a case with successful excision.

A 5-year-old boy with clinical findings of pulmonic stenosis was found to have a large calcified mass in the right ventricular outflow region and a gradient of 120 mm Hg between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. At surgery, an ovalshaped tumor attached to the interventricular septum and obstructing the right ventricular outflow tract was removed. The child survived and is doing well. Histologically, the tumor had the characteristics of fibroma. A hemodynamic study three months after surgery showed almost complete abolishment of the gradient. To our knowledge this is the fifth reported case of calcified right ventricular fibroma with successful operation. In childhood intracardiac calcifications, together with obstruction, are highly suggestive of this lesion.

Incidence of urinary tract infection during pregnancy.

Incidence of urinary tract infection (UTI) during pregnancy among Pakistani women was examined. Midstream urine was collected from 250 pregnant and 100 control women and streaked on blood agar and incubated. Growth was considered significant if > or = 10(5)/mL bacteria were present. Among the pregnant women, 28.5% had UTI; 30.0% of controls had UTI. Among the pregnant and control women, 24.4% and 20.0% respectively had UTI symptoms, such as incontinence, nocturia and urgency. Symptoms did not correlate with incidence. Socioeconomic status, personal hygiene, education level, pregnancy duration, postcoital washing, contraceptive use and use of underclothing had no significant association with UTI occurrence. A history of past urological problems was associated with an increased incidence of UTI in pregnancy.
