[Shy-Drager syndrome and megaesophagus (author's transl)].

Authors report the case of a Shy-Drager syndrome (idiopathic postural hypotension due to a central degenerative lesion) syndrome which evolution uncovered a megaesophagus. The knowledge of degenerative lesions of the vagus nerve in megaesophagus, the effectiveness of motory lesions of the esophagus in Parkinson's disease where lesions of the vagoglosso pharyngeal dorsal nucleus frequently occurs, allow to discuss the central nervous origin of the megaesophagus appeared in the reported case.

[Mesenteric clamp syndrome complicating pancreatic trauma (author's transl)].

Duodenal obstruction by the mesenteric artery has mostly been reported in profoundly denutrated patients. We here report one case after left spleno-pancreatectomy following pancreatic isthmus rhexis concerning a seventeen years old injured young boy, who was kept in supination position because of a backbone fracture. Vertebral osteo-synthesis allowed a quickly efficient postural treatment.

[Pulmonary wounds (author's transl)].

A study of 22 patients with pulmonary wounds has confirmed the advantages of the traditional therapeutic attitude adopted in the majority of cases, and the rare indications requiring urgent or early operation for pulmonary lesions. Hunting gun pulmonary wounds, in which there is predominant "contusion" require individual treatment, and in 2 of the 4 cases treated in this serie, secondary excision was necessary.

[The influence of thymus on mouse resistance against rabies before and after vaccination (author's transl)].

Thymus participation was investigated in a comparative study of natural resistance to rabies in Nude mice and normal litter mates. Such participation does not seem to happen during Challenge Virus Strain infection but might change the host cell-virus metabolism during street rabies infection by inhibition of Negri bodies genesis. However, this participation seems indispensable (except in few cases) to allow resistance after vaccination. For instance twice more antigen is necessary to immunize thymectomized than normal mice, and most of Nude mice can not stand intramuscular challenge nor produce antibodies, neither they are able to be protected by injection of antirabies antibodies.

[Pallido-dentate calcifications (apropos of 7 anatomo-clinical case reports)].

"Fahr's Disease" is characterized by bilateral and symmetrical calcifications of the Globus Pallidus (systematically extending to the Commisura Anterior and the Capsula Interna, and less commonly to the Putamen, the Centrum Semi-Ovale and the Cerebral Cortex), and of the Cerebellar Nucleus Dentalus (with spreading to the White Matter and the Cortical Lamellae). Lesions or absence of Parathyroids are frequently related, with subsequent metabolic disorders of Phosphorus and Calcium, but idiopathic cases without hypoparathyroid disturbances are also found. A Morgagni-Morel Hyperostosis Frontalis Interna is often associated with "Fahr's Disease", and there could be a relationship between these two affections. We found in three cases the association between "Fahr's Disease" and Morel's Nodular Dysgenesis of the Frontal Cortex. Most of the cases are sporadic, but observations with a clear familial incidence are also found. Clinically, various Neurological Disorders (cerebellar, extrapyramidal, pyramidal, dysarthria, epileptic seizures) are often but not always observed; the Psychiatric Disorders found in some cases could be fortuitious associations (psychoses), connected to hypothyroidism (oligophrenia), and in aged patients, to unrelated cerebral vascular or degenerative lesions; very seldom, a dementing state could be connected to the spreading of calcifications to the Cerebral Cortex.

[Production of a photo-sensitive lipid antibiotic by the marine diatom Chaetoceros lauderi (Ralfs) (author's transl)].

A lipid antibiotic was extracted from whole cells of the marine diatom Chaetoceros lauderi (Ralfs) and roughly identified as an unsaturated fatty acid by thin layer chromatography. A number of Gram-positive terrestrial bacteria and several Gram-negative marine bacilli were sensitive to this antibiotic, whereas Gram-negative enteric bacteria were resistant. Solar irradiation led to its partial disappearance and to the production of more polar antibiotics with a stronger antibacterial activity. This observation is compared to similar data culled from literature, and its significance in a natural environment is discussed.

[Demonstration of interactions between visual and splanchnic afferences at the level of the cerebral cortex in cats].

In the chloralose-anesthetized cats, evoked potentials (E.P) were recorded from cerebral cortex with the use of 1) macroelectrodes in two overlapping zones between splanchnic and visual areas : Medial Lateral and Anterior Suprasylvian (S II) gyri ; 2) microelectrodes in Medial Lateral gyrus. Our results show : 1) a strong increase of the primary visual E.P. in Medial Laternal gyrus by splanchnic stimulus ; 2) a strong inhibition of the primary splanchnic E.P. in S II by visual stimulus ; 3) an inhibition of some cortical neurons in Medial Lateral gyrus by splanchnic stimulus ; 4) an inhibition of associative visual E.P. in S II by splanchnic stimulus, and of associative splanchnic E.P. in Medial Lateral gyrus by visual stimulus. In the other hand splanchnic and visual E.P. were recorded from N. reticularis and Corpus Geniculatum Mediale with the use of concentric electrode. Some hypothesis concerning interrelations mechanisms are discussed.

Afferent Pathways↗

[Reticular activation by splanchnic afferents: its influence on visual projections at the level of the cerebral cortex in cats].

In an previous work, we have shown a strong increase of visual evoked potentials of the medial lateral gyrus by splanchnic stimulation. This present study demonstrates that this effect is due to the activation of the substantia reticularis. Actually, we observed: 1) an increase of the reticular visual potential by splanchnic stimulus in convergent zone; 2) an increase of the visual evoked potential in the primary cortical area by stimulation of this reticular formation. These results show the existence of a functional pathway including the splanchnic nerve, the reticular formation and the visual cortex.
