The effects of ethomersole (50 mg/kg orally during 10 days) on local cerebral blood flow and cerebral tissue impedance were investigated in rats after left carotid artery ligation and right carotid artery narrowing (blood flow was decreased to 50%). Under these conditions, ethomersole accelerated the blood flow recovery, levelled blood flow asymmetry between the hemispheres, decreased the development of brain edema. In in vitro experiments ethomersole demonstrated a pronounced limitation of cerebral lipid peroxidation.
Intravenous cerebrocrast, 1 g/kg/min, and nicardipine, 0.5 g/kg/min, given to cats during 60 min one day after cerebral hemorrhage were found to produce an improvement of cerebral blood supply and oxygen consumption along with a moderate fall of blood pressure. The favourable effect of cerebrocrast on brain oxygen and carbohydrate metabolism was mediated by increased brain blood supply. As compared to cerebrocrast, nicardipine induced a more prolonged antihypertensive response and more pronounced effects on cerebral tissue metabolism, by substantially decreasing brain lactate production.
Blood loss in 14 anesthetized cats was completely replaced either by polyglucin (control group) or polyglucin with addition of polyethylene oxide (mol. mass 6x10(6)). Blood of the cats contained 2.6-4.4 x 10(6) g/ml of polyethylene oxide. Its introduction promoted advanced recovery of hemodynamic indices and stimulated systemic oxygen transport.

The mechanism of the diuretic effect of the new drug polyosm, polyethylene oxide 400 solution, was studied in experiments on anesthetized cats. Intravenous polyosm infusion was attended with a marked diuretic and natriuretic effect developing due to reduced reabsorption of water and natrium and increased glomerular filtration.
For the selection of compounds affecting the hemorrheologic status a method for reproducing disorders of blood rheologic properties in vitro was developed. It consists in 60-min incubation of blood at 42 degrees C. The hemorrheologic effect of quercetin under such conditions was studied and a dependence of the effect of quercetin on blood viscosity and red cell aggregation on the drug concentration was revealed.
Experiments were conducted on Wistar rats to study the effect of intravenous infusion of polyosm (solution of polyethyleneoxide 400) on the parameters of brain tissue edema-swelling (according to impedancemetry findings) and the local cerebral blood flow on a model of acute hypertensive encephalopathy. Under such conditions the drug hastened involution of edema-swelling of the brain tissue and prevented a decrease in cerebral blood flow.
Experiments were conducted on cats to study the pharmacokinetics of polyosm possessing diuretic and antiedemic properties whose primary acting component is polyethyleneoxide 400. Biexponential dependence of the blood drug concentration on the time with T1/2 values of 41 min and 4.8 h was revealed. In the first 5 h after intravenous infusion of the drug 60.8% of the introduced dose of polyethyleneoxide 400 (1 g/kg) was excreted through the kidneys.
