Unusual fermentative, gram-negative bacilli isolated from clinical specimens. I. Characterization of Erwinia strains of the "lathyri-herbicola group".

Five strains of gram-negative, yellow chromogenic bacilli were recovered from clinical specimens which fit the characteristics of the "lathyri-herbicola group" within the genus Erwinia. The strains were facultatively anaerobic, fermentative, anaerogenic bacilli with peritrichous flagella which grew at 37 C, reduced nitrate to nitrite, and failed to produce oxidase, pectinase, arginine dihydrolase, and decarboxylases for lysine and ornithine. Aggregations of bacteria (symplasmata) were observed in the syneresis water of slant cultures, and analogous granular aggregates and biconvex, spindle-shaped bodies developed in colonies on plate cultures. Awareness of these characteristics should result in more frequent identification of Erwinia species from human sources.

Unusual fermentative, gram-negative bacilli isolated from clinical specimens. II. Characterization of Aeromonas species.

Morphological and physiological characterization of 12 Aeromonas strains isolated from clinical specimens demonstrated several important diagnostic features. These included polar arrangement of the flagella; production of oxidase, deoxyribonuclease, amylase, gelatinase, and lipase; lack of ornithine decarboxylase; and sensitivity to polymyxin. Awareness of these features should result in more frequent differentiation of aeromonads from the physiologically similar members of the genus Plesiomonas and the late- or non-lactose-fermenting species of Enterobacteriaceae.

Education issues in disaster medicine: summary and action plan.

INTRODUCTION: Change must begin with education. Theme 8 explored issues that need attention in Disaster Medicine education. METHODS: Details of the methods used are provided in the introductory paper. The chairs moderated all presentations and produced a summary that was presented to an assembly of all of the delegates. The chairs then presided over a workshop that resulted in the generation of a set of action plans that then were reported to the collective group of all delegates. RESULTS: Main points developed during the presentations and discussion included: (1) formal education, (2) standardized definitions, (3) integration, (4) evaluation of programs and interventions, (5) international cooperation, (6) identifying the psychosocial consequences of disaster, (7) meaningful research, and (8) hazard, impact, risk and vulnerability analysis. DISCUSSION: Three main components of the action plans were identified as evaluation, research, and education. The action plans recommended that: (1) education on disasters should be formalized, (2) evaluation of education and interventions must be improved, and (3) meaningful research should be promulgated and published for use at multiple levels and that applied research techniques be the subject of future conferences. CONCLUSIONS: The one unanimous conclusion was that we need more and better education on the disaster phenomenon, both in its impacts and in our response to them. Such education must be increasingly evidence-based.

Amplification, expression and localization of the c-myc gene in BSp73 rat tumor cell lines.

Metastatic (ASML 14-1, ASmv) and non metastatic (AS17-4) cell lines of the rat BSp73 pancreatic adenocarcinoma were investigated for amplification and expression of oncogene DNA. The c-myc gene was amplified, but only in one metastatic variant, ASML. The degree of amplification (3.5-fold) increased after prolongued in vitro cultivation (17.5-fold). All three tumor cell lines expressed c-myc and ras mRNA. Ras expression was at the same level as in rat liver. C-myc expression was considerably above the level in rat liver, but also differed considerably between the metastatic variants. In the metastatic ASML cells the c-myc gene was localized by in situ hybridization on a marker chromosome derived from chromosome 7. The karyotypes of the metastatic variants are different and have no common marker chromosomes. Our results obtained with the BSp73 tumor model do not support a role of the c-myc gene in the metastatic process.

[Pregnancy in Takayasu arteritis].

We report the course of pregnancy in a patient with Takayasu's arteritis type I and describe the diagnostical and therapeutical management with repeated Doppler-sonography. Immunosuppressive therapy was reduced in pregnancy and could be maintained on a low level even after delivery. In the third trimester arterial blood pressure raised up to 190/60 mm Hg and was sufficiently lowered by prescription of verapamil. Repeated Doppler-sonographic investigation beginning with 20 weeks of gestation revealed indices in the normal range during the whole pregnancy. After 37 weeks of gestation a healthy infant was delivered vaginally. The post partum course was uneventful.
