Experimental production of bladder calculi in rats by ureaplasma injection.

Certain infection stones are thought to be linked to urease-possessing bacteria such as Proteus sp. Since ureaplasma also contain urease and are predominantly located in the urogenital tract, their possible role in the formation of infection stones was studied in the rat model described by Friedlander and Braude [2]. Infection stones were produced in Sprague-Dawley and Wistar male rats after injection of ureaplasmas into the renal medulla. In Sprague-Dawley rats, six different ureaplasma strains (serotypes 3 and 5 clinical isolates) were able to produce bladder stones. Acetohydroxamic acid, a urease inhibitor, prevented the formation of the stones. There was no difference in urinary pH or the presence of leukocytes, crystals and ureaplasmas in the urine between rats which presented stones and those which did not. Ureaplasmas could be cultivated only very rarely from rat stones. Similarly, no ureaplasmas could be obtained from human stones.

Relationship between dietary retinol and alpha-tocopherol and lipid peroxidation in rat liver cytosol.

The effects of retinol and alpha-tocopherol-deficient and supplemented diets on the cytosolic concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in rat liver have been studied. Physiological lipoperoxidation (LPO) was observed in liver cytosol of control rats (TBARS = 0.315 +/- 0.034 nmol of MDA equivalents/mg of liver cytosolic proteins). In retinol-deficient diets there was a decrease in retinolaemia and the absence of retinol in liver cytosol while cytosolic TBARS increased significantly (P less than 0.001). Vitamin E was not found in cytosolic fractions, except in alpha-tocopherol-supplemented diet rats. alpha-Tocopherol-deficient diets induced an absence of vitamin E in the serum and cytosolic TBARS were increased compared to controls (P less than 0.001). Supplementation of the diet with retinol and alpha-tocopherol or both in combination induced a significant decrease in liver cytosolic TBARS (P less than 0.001). Finally the combination of low dietary supplementation with retinol and alpha-tocopherol (ten times the normal diet each) induced the maximum anti-LPO effect.

[Study on correlations between certain biological parameters and the Achillean reflexogram in a homogeneous African population (author's transl)].

Study of a homogenous population comprising 25 male Africans. The following parameters have been measured: proteinemia, hematocrit, natremia, calcemia, globular and plasmatic magnesemia, duration of the achillean reflexogram. Hyperproteidemia and hypomagnesemia, which are usually observed in African people, were found. A negative linear relationship significant at the 10 0/0 threshhold has been demonstrated between the reflexogram and the P.B.I. value.

[Human malaria: dysglobulinemia-hypocholesterolemia syndrome].

Comparative study of protein and lipid parameters within a homogenous sample of 144 non-immune subjects having stayed for four months in Central Africa, suggests a dysglobulinemia more significant in the infected group. This dysglobulinemia affects in particular the IgM which are negatively correlated with cholesterol, positively with apoproteins A2 and H.D.L. Such a peculiar profiling involving immunoglobulins, apoproteins and cholesterol is rapidly regressive after stopping exposure to parasitic risk. It appears as an adaptation syndrome--or resistance--to tropical environment.

[Localization by paper blotting technique of electrophoretic fractions on starch gel. Application to alpha 1 - antitrypsin (author's transl)].

The authors describe a paper blotting technique to reveal starch electrophoresis. After 3 minutes of contact between the paper band and the starch gel the former can be either dried during 5' at 90 degrees C then stained with nigrosine or sliced and revealed by an immunserum. This quick technique has been successfully applied to alpha-1-antitrypsin; on the one side phenotypes can be identified 24 hours earlier than with staining method using amido black 10 B and on the other side quality control of the fractionning can be done before the second stage of the Laurell type two-dimension separation.

[Biological health check-up for woodworkers in Ivory Coast: first results (author's transl)].

A random sample of 125 woodworkers in Ivory Coast was subjected to a biological health check-up. Being relatively simple this check-up has allowed us however to reveal the following pathological states for subjects not complaining of any illness: 2 anemia, 25 haemoglobinopathies, I monoclonal dysglobulinemia, I massive dysglobulinemia with splenomegaly, 8 massive hypergammaglobulinemia. Otherwise the following frequent values gave been determined according to RICHTERICH's statistical approach: age, height, weight, hematocrite haemoglobinemia, haemoglobin type, proteinemia, lipidemia, cholesterolemia, triglyceridemia, alpha-lipoproteinemia, A. M. G. immunoglobulinemia.
