Mechanisms of transport of Na+ and Cl- in the lizard colon.

1. Ionic fluxes of sodium and chloride across lizard colon mucosa were measured and compared with the electrical characteristics of the tissue under voltage-clamped conditions. 2. In a Ringer-bicarbonate solution there was both a net sodium flux (JNanet) and a net chloride flux (JClnet) from mucosa to serosa. The net flux residual (JR) was near zero, indicating that net sodium and chloride transport is the result of an electrically neutral transport mechanism. 3. In the presence of sodium, the net chloride flux was abolished and the short-circuit current (Isc) and the electrical potential difference (PD) were unchanged. In the absence of chloride the net sodium flux was abolished and the short-circuit current and electrical potential difference were not modified. 4. From an analysis of the effects of the inhibitors, furosemide, amiloride and disulfonic stilbene (DIDS), a plausible model was developed to explain the characteristics of sodium and chloride absorption.

[Spontaneous peritonitis in the patient with cirrhosis, our experience].

Due to scarce printed information in our country, the incidence regarding spontaneous peritonitis observed during two years in 76 ascites episodes, found in 63 patients with hepatic cirrhosis, is analysed retrospectively. Thirteen patients (17%), showed spontaneous peritonitis and the relationship man-woman was 5 to 1; 70% of the germs found in the ascites fluid was of enteric origin, mainly Escherichia Coli. In three patients the diagnosis was made by both counting the leucocytes and the clinical symptoms, in spite of the negative culture. There were no significant differences in the presence of humoral complications or alterations when patients appeared with sterile ascites and spontaneous peritonitis, but there were differences with the death rate which was 7.9% (5/63), in the former and 38% (5/13), in infected ascites; 80% of the dead patients showed renal deficiency at the end of the evolution and a relationship with the use of aminoglucosides can not be discarded. The search for spontaneous peritonitis in the cirrhotic patient, as a routine, seems to have the same incidence among as, as the one described in the literature.

Familial inv(1) (p3500q21.3) associated with azoospermia.

An inv(1) (p3500q21.3) was found in an azoospermic man, his mother and two other maternal relatives. Although the mechanisms involved are still unclear, it is stressed that pericentric inversions of chromosome 1 in which the inverted chromosome becomes submetacentric (centromeric index less than or equal to 0.324) apparently impair spermatogenesis.

[Sclerosing treatment of esophageal varices].

Sixty-five patients with hepatic cirrhosis and esophageal varices were subjected to endoscopic sclerotherapy. Twelve patients were treated in the intervals between hemorrhages; 43 patients were treated after their first hemorrhage. The rate of survival in a 5 to 26 month period was 82%.

[Determination of cholic and sulfolithocholic acids in various hepatopathies].

The conjugated cholic acid (glycocholic acid) (GC) in the serum and the conjugated sulfolithocholic acid (sulfolithoglycocholic acid (SLGC) in 35 aggressive chronic hepatitis (HCA), 22 cirrhosis, 11 primary biliary cirrhosis (CBP), 11 pruritus of pregnancy and in 20 normal controls were determined. The control group revealed a mean value of GC of 21 micrograms % with a dispersion of +/- 14 micrograms % and for SLGC of 36 micrograms % with a dispersion of +/- 9 micrograms %. The frequency of the alteration of GC and SLGC in the cases of chronic hepatitis was low (14% and 9%) as well as in the cirrhosis (23% and 14%). In the pruritus of pregnancy the values reached 64% and 45%. On the other hand, the values were significantly elevated in CBP (100% and 90%) (p.001 and p.006). The absolute values in the various pathologies revealed mean values which were different but with a very wide dispersion that prevented us from seeing any relation between those absolute values and the different diseases. The alteration in the metabolism of biliary acids in the hepatic pathology was manifested by the postprandial determination of GC and SLGC in 20 HCA in whom the frequency of abnormal values rose from 14% and 9% on fasting to 60% and 45% prandially.

Meiotic arrest at first spermatocyte level: a new inherited infertility disorder.

Three 46,XY phenotypically male, azoospermic brothers out of thirteen sibs from a consanguineous marriage were studied and found to have a unique pattern of testicular histology with arrest of spermatogenesis at the pachytene stage of primary spermatocytes. Endocrinological evaluation showed elevated plasma luteinizing(LH) and normal to elevated follicle-stimulating (FSH) hormones, positive gonadotropin pituitary response to luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone, depletion of LH and FSH levels by exogenous testosterone (T) administration, normal levels of T and dihydrotestosterone hormones, and elevation of T after stimulation with human chorionic gonadotropin hormone. Electrophoretic assay of lactic dehydrogenase isozymes did not reveal band C4 in semen or testicular tissue. These traits seem to constitute a hitherto undescribed form of infertility in which spermatogenesis arrest at the first spermatocyte level is the main feature. The parental consanguinity suggests autosomal recessive inheritance.

alpha, 1-4 Glucosidase activity in human seminal plasma from normal, vasectomized, and subfertile men.

Neutral alpha, 1-4 glucosidase activity was assayed by a spectrophotometric method using p-nitro-phenyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside as the substrate in the seminal plasma of normal, vasectomized, and oligospermic men. The latter groups showed lower values than the controls. These results suggest that the main source of the alpha, 1-4 glucosidase activity is between the vasectomy site and the tubule, and that the enzyme is related to sperm density or to a spermatogenesis factor.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome with feminizing sertoli cell tumor.

A case involving a 6-year-old boy with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and an unilateral feminizing Sertoli cell tumor is described. Endocrinologic studies revealed consistently high plasma and urine levels of estrogens and normal levels of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. The increased levels of estrogens did not show changes that could be correlated with exogenous gonadotropin administration, thus indicating an autonomous nature. The histopathologic studies of nontumorous testicular tissue revealed changes in the seminiferous tubules which suggested that estrogens, directly or indirectly, may have had both stimulating and atrophying effects. It is concluded that gonadal tumors are in additional manifestation of the Peutz-Jeghers syndrome gene in both male and female patients.

Studies on benzene mutagenesis. I. The micronucleus test.

The mutagenic action of benzene was studied by means of the micronucleus test performed on mice. A linear dose effect relationship was found for the percentage of micronucleated erythrocytes, against the benzene-dose logarithms. A significant dose effect correlation was found either after the standard 30-h experiments or after a prolonged 54-h one. A higher effect was found in the prolonged experiments, suggesting the induction of a delay in the cell cycle by benzene.
