To cope with its tasks more efficiently, the Public Health Office of the "Märkische Kreis" in 1985 installed an information system on the basis of electronic data processing, the so-called "hygiene inventory". Initially, the introduction of this system into the local Public Health Office is described. The structure and organization of the programme and its performance are then discussed and exemplified by the control of drinking water supply plants. The disadvantages of computer use are by no means overlooked. The latter include the necessity to initially put in a considerable number of data and to constantly store new results, initial acceptance problems and the poor autonomy of the system. The most important advantages of computer-aided processing are optimum evaluation possibilities, centralised scheduling, automated production of letters, efficient drafting of the annual health report and the possibility of exchanging data media.

Twenty-two species of Scophulariaceae have been found to accumulate flavonoid aglycones externally on their leaves and stems. They belong to the genera Anarrhinum, Antirrhinum, Asarina, Calceolaria, Mimulus, and Odontites. Most of the flavonoids are methylated flavones and flavonols, some with 6-O and/or 8-O-substitution. One of them is the natural isobutyryl ester of a rare flavone.
A new flavonoid, 2,3-trans-5,2'-dihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxy-dihydroflavonol-3-O-acetate, was isolated from the farinose coating on the lower leave surface of the fern, Notholaena sulphurea. The 2,3-cis diastereoisomer was isolated as a co-constituent. This novel acylated flavonoid is characteristic for the chemotype of N. sulphurea exhibiting yellow frond exudate. Its orrurrence underlines the affiliation of the species with the genus Notholaena.
For the coverage of specific epidemiological facts the Public Health offices have a considerable number of data available, i.e. the death certificates they have to check; until now, however, the problem-oriented evaluation of these data has been restricted because the conventional methods require a large staff and take up a lot of time. The "Märkische Kreis" Public Health office introduced a computer-based system to evaluate death certificates. The programme described here allows the use of descriptive statistical methods for the evaluation of individually selected mortality data. Compared to the official statistics on the causes of death the system described takes additional items into consideration, i.e. several diseases involved in the cause of death.
