Embryo-derived teratocarcinoma. II. Teratocarcinogenesis depends on the type of embryonic graft.

Early post-implantation mouse embryos or their embryonic and extraembryonic portions were transplanted under the kidney capsule of adult isogenic recipients in order to test the tumor-producing potential of various grafts and to establish the optimal conditions for teratocarcinoma production. The highest yield of malignant tumors was obtained from 7-day embryos transplanted in toto. Severing the extraembryonic portion of 7-day egg cylinders prior to transplantation of the embryonic part reduced the number of teratocarcinomas to values comparable with those obtained from transplanted 6-day embryos. The extraembryonic portion of 7-day embryos produced no tumors. These data suggest that extraembryonic portions of the 7-day egg cylinder do not have tumorigenic potential alone, but may increase the yield of teratocarcinomas from the embryonic portion of the egg cylinder.

Embryo-derived teratocarcinoma: I. The role of strain and gender in the control of teratocarcinogenesis.

The role of gender and genetic (strain-specific) factors in the regulation of teratocarcinogenesis was studied by monitoring the outgrowth of benign and malignant embryo-derived teratoid tumors, i.e., teratomas and teratocarconomas in several mouse strains. Teratocarcinomas were produced in all mouse strains tested, but the ratio of teratoma to teratocarcinoma varied from one strain to another. A high yield of teratocarcinomas was obtained in A/J, BALB/cJ, DBA/2J, CBA/J and C3H/J mice, irrespective of the sex of the recipient. A low yield of teratocarcinomas was obtained in both male and female C57BL/6J and AKR/J recipients, and in 129/J female recipients. For all strains but 129/J and eventually AKR/J the sex of the recipients did not significantly affect the outgrowth of embryo-derived tumors. These data suggest the existence of mouse strains with high and low permissiveness for embryo-derived teratocarcinogenesis. The sex of the recipients may influence the yield of embryo-derived teratocarcinomas in some mouse strains but is of no consequence in others.

[Correlation of gastroscopic, pathohistologic, cytologic and cytochemical analysis of ulcer lesions and other pathologic changes in the gastric mucosa. Preliminary study].

This paper concerns our first experience of correlation analysis between the gastroscopic, pathohystologic, cytologic and cytochemical findings of different organic gastric lesion on gastroscopy. The authors' experience is based on 78 patients in whom 450 biopsies were performed. For an adequate analysis, 135 samples of pathohystologic anc cytological examinations were useful and only 80 samples for cytochemical analysis. From these examinations it is possible to conclude that the cytochemical reactions of the group of patients with inflammatory lesions and intestinal metaplasia showed changes in the level of enzyme aminopolypeptidase together with the presence of acid mucopolysacharides. In the group of patients with lesions showing an ulcer, carcinoma or suspect malignancies, the changes occured in the composition of enzymes such as acid phosphatase, DNP Diaphoresis and nonspecific esterases. With such combined examinations the percentage of correct diagnoses was increased in comparison with conventional method of gastroscopy and biopsy.

Histologic and cytologic liver changes in 120 patients with malignant lymphomas.

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of liver involvement in malignant lymphomas. Non-specific liver changes were also registered. Percutaneous liver biopsy was performed on 120 patients with untreated malignant lymphomas. There were 38 patients with Hodgkin's disease, 42 with histiocytic and 40 with lymphocytic lymphomas. All the biopsy specimens were histologically and cytologically analyzed. Positive liver findings (lymphomatous infiltration) were observed in 27.5% of patients with lymphocytic, 23.8% with histiocytic lymphomas, and 7.8% with Hodgkin's disease. Liver involvement in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas was significantly higher (P less than 0.025) than in Hodgkin's disease. In the whole group of patients, there were non-specific liver changes: 23 chronic persistent hepatitis, 5 aggressive hepatitis, 9 liver steatosis and 4 liver hemosiderosis. Based on these results, it can be concluded that liver involvement with lymphomatous tissue is more common in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Knowledge of this is relevant for clinical staging and the treatment program. These findings also confirm that percutaneous liver biopsy is a valuable diagnostic procedure in the staging of malignant lymphomas.

The diagnostic value of percutaneus liver biopsy in patients with non Hodgkin's lymphoma - a preliminary report.

Since the presence of the pathological liver process definitely changes the approach in determining clinical staging and therapy of patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the authors carried out percutaneous liver biopsies in 33 untreated patients with this diseases. The liver biopsies were performed with Menghini's needle and the material was histologically and cytologically examined. Liver involvement was found in 9 (27%) patients. Based on the analyzed biopsies, the authors concluded that percutaneous liver biopsies represent a significant diagnostic approach in clinical staging and therapy of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The authors further compared the bioptical findings with physical examinations, biochemical blood tests and liver scintigraphy.

Cystic cholangiofibrosis of the liver.

We have studied with electron microscope the cysts formed in the liver of rats fed acetylaminofluorene in order to further characterize the lesion and its histogenesis. The cysts were lined by cuboidal and flattened epithelium or both and resembled bile ductular cells. Most of the flattened cells showed adaptive and degenerative changes indicative of pressure atrophy. The cuboidal cells lining the smaller ducts showed ultrastructural signs of activity. Similar "active" cells were seen in the outpouchings of the larger cysts. Our data indicate that the cysts are of cholangiocellular origin. Ultrastructurally the cells forming the cysts showed no signs of anaplasia and represent more likely the end point of bile ductular proliferation than a stage in development of biliary neoplasia.

[Malignant tumor (sarcoma) on a fetal neck, diagnosed during pregnancy by means of ultrasonics].

Authors present a case of congenital sarcoma discovered by ultrasound at 30 weeks of pregnancy. The tumour was shown projecting from the anterior neck, well limited and measured 12 X 12 X 8 cm associated with maternal hydramnios. Pregnancy was terminated. Patho-histological finding was a spindle cell sarcoma of the neck and mandibular region. Discussion is about clinical, ultrasound-diagnostic and morphological aspect of this rare entity.
