[Color doppler ultrasonography in diagnosis of ocular and orbital tumor in children].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of USG-CD in the assessment of ocular and orbital tumors in children. METHODS: 24 children with focal changes in eyeballs and orbita were examined. The results of USG-CD were compared with those of computer tomography and angiography. Diagnosis was confirmed during surgery or by biopsy. RESULTS: Typical USG-CD pictures of haemangioma, melanoma, retinoblastoma and also pseudotumors caused by haematoma and inflammation were described. The sonographic examination enabled to determine the placement and extent of the lesions, the Doppler option allowed to evaluate their blood-supply and in some cases, e.g. in haemangioma, to state a diagnosis.

Angiography↗

[Doppler color ultrasonography in the evaluation of orbital and eyeball vessels].

31 persons without any changes in visual system and 16 patients with vascular lesions were examined using Doppler colour ultrasonography. This method allowed to identify and evaluate the blood flow in central retinal artery, ophthalmic artery and in ciliary arteries. The authors described a typical picture of normal eyeball and orbita as well as the blood flow observed with Doppler pulsation wave. It was found that normal orbital veins were difficult to observe. The pathological changes of the blood flow in carotid artery occlusion, in arterial-cavernous shunt and in retrobulbar neuritis were also described. The authors indicate a great diagnostic usefulness of the method.

Adolescent↗

[Lowe's syndrome].

The authors described symptoms of oculocerebral Lowe's syndrome and presented a case of this disease. It concerned a 3-week old baby with congenital cataract, hyperaminoaciduria and increasing mental and psychomotor retardation. During 16-month observation, local and general symptoms typical of Lowe's syndrome appeared.

Humans↗

[Ocular system in Down's syndrome].

The authors presents results of ophthalmological examination of 150 patients with cytogenetically diagnosed Down's syndrome. Refractive errors, requiring correction with glasses, were found in 45.3% of patients. Other ocular changes among which some were qualified for treatment, were observed in 72.7% of cases.

Adolescent↗

[Changes in the visual system in low birth weight children].

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the visual system, especially refraction, in children with low birth weight under observation between 1990-1992. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 248 children with birth weight 600-2500 g and gestational age 26-37 weeks underwent ophthalmological examination including USG, ERG and VER. The children were first examined between 3-4 weeks of life, then at 8 and 12 weeks and 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. RESULTS: Refractive errors were found in 216 of patients, in 85.2% hypermetropia. ROP occurred in 7 children with birth weight below 1500 g and gestational age 27-32 weeks. Other ocular changes were observed in 19 (7.6%) of the examined children.
