Serum levels of gastrointestinal cancer antigen (GICA) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were determined in 167 patients with colorectal carcinoma. Eighty-eight patients were studied preoperatively, and 79 postoperatively, before, at the time of, and after the diagnosis of relapse. The authors aimed to assess how often the GICA test failed, i.e., was false-negative in patients in whom the CEA test was true-positive and, more importantly, whether it could give diagnostic information in patients in whom the CEA test failed. Before surgery, serum GICA gave similar information to serum CEA in 56 percent of the patients: true-positive in 18 percent and false-negative in 38 percent; less information in 42 percent; and more information in only 2 percent. During the postoperative follow-up, serum GICA gave similar information to serum CEA in 55 percent of the patients: true-positive (i.e., rising persistently from a postoperative nadir) in 27 percent and false-negative in 28 percent; less information in 44 percent; and more information in only 1 percent. Therefore, this test in its present version, where both the catcher and the tracer antibody are the same, NS 19-9, is redundant.
In 50 patients with seminoma and in 50 with nonseminomatous germ cell tumors of the testis, serum levels of conventional markers (CEA, AFP, hCG) and ferritin were measured at the time of admission and during management. The conventional markers behaved as reported previously. After orchiectomy, elevated levels of ferritin were found in the presence as well as in the absence of tumor; the extent of these elevations was highly variable. Serial determinations of serum ferritin showed two patterns of variation. First, in patients treated with retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, irradiation, and chemotherapy regimens without platinum, decreasing levels of the conventional markers and serum ferritin were associated with response to therapy and increasing levels with relapse of tumor. Second, in patients treated with chemotherapy regimens containing cis-diamminedichloroplatinum, the conventional markers returned to normal values while the ferritin level doubled or tripled and returned to pretreatment or normal values only several weeks after therapy. Thus, it appears that hyperferritinemia was a sensitive index of platinum toxicity. We conclude that the serum ferritin level has no value in staging after orchiectomy but is a useful index of response to therapy during treatment with retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, irradiation or chemotherapy without platinum or relapse of tumor. During treatment with platinum, elevated levels might be explained as a possible toxic side effect of this drug.

The influence of ISO, the antiviral drug of immunomodulating activity, on the course of experimental influenza infections and mixed, viral-bacterial infections was studied. Spleen leukocytes migration inhibition test, performed in vitro in the presence of specific antigens stimulating influence of the drug administered to the infected animals was observed.
The influence of ISO on some stages of the phagocytosis was examined. Namely, the capacity for absorbing and intracellular killing of bacteria in animals infected with influenza viruses and with mixed, viral-bacterial infections was considered. The stimulative influence of the drug was observed. It was particularly visible with the viruses adapted to mice. The influence of the drug is probably in some way specific.

Phagocytic and bactericidal activities of neutrophils relative to Staphylococcus aureus 209 P strain were studied in 16 duodenal ulcer patients who were intravenously administered cimetidine in doses of 4 X 200 mg for 8 days and in a group of untreated healthy subjects. The investigations were made before the treatment on the last day of cimetidine administration, and one week after drug withdrawal. The bactericidal activity of neutrophils was found to be higher in duodenal ulcer patients than in the healthy controls. Cimetidine does not have a significant effect on the phagocytic activity of neutrophils and it has a moderately inhibitory effect (p less than 0.05) on the bactericidal activity relative to the ingested intracellular bacteria. This shows that cimetidine may modify some of the neutrophil functions in duodenal ulcer patients.

The aim of this work was to study the relationship between the state of saturation of the organism with vitamin E and vitamin C and the serum level of lipid peroxides in elderly people. The determinations were carried out in 100 subjects, mainly women, aged 60-100 years living in old people's homes, who were given daily vitamin E, 200 mg, or vitamin C, 400 mg, or both vitamins during 1 year. A correlation was found between the degree of saturation of the organism with vitamin E and the level of lipid peroxides. The daily intake of vitamin E for 4 months decreased the serum peroxide level by a mean value of 14%; a similar intake of vitamin C decreased it by 8%, and both vitamins decreased it by 20% compared with the initial level. After 1 year, these levels were decreased by 26% (vitamin E), 13% (vitamin C) and 25% (both vitamins).

Phagocytic and bactericidal activity of granulocytes were estimated in granulocytes of normal and diabetic children. The influence of candidal, tuberculin antigens, and staphylococcal antitoxin on these parameters was also tested. Thirty diabetic and forty healthy children made up the study group. Their ages were 6-18 yr. The disease duration was from 1 to 12 yr. Granulocytes from diabetic children demonstrated a normal ability to absorb staphylococcus. On the other hand, the capacity for intercellular killing of bacteria by granulocytes of diabetic children was decreased.
Complex evaluations of the function of peripheral blood granulocytes in the Phenol Plant workers were made. Only precise examinations of the bactericidal and ingestive functions as well as the metabolism of those cells may lead to the discovery of a clinically unnoticeable insufficiency of the system as has been confirmed by other authors and by our own previous studies. Routine methods of separating granulocytes of heparinized peripheral blood were used. Phagocytic activity of cells after contact with three antigens was studied. Bactericidal activity of granulocytes in the presence of Staph. aureus and antibactericidal activity of lysosomal proteins of granulocytes were evaluated. According to the general assessment, no permanent disturbances of the granulocyte function were observed in the phenol plant workers. However, disturbances of the phagocytic and bactericidal abilities were detected in some individual cases. In general evaluation no disturbances of function of granulocytes concerning all some cases phagocytary and bactericidal abilities did not occur simultaneously.
