[Morphologic, biochemical and functional properties of the mitochondria of the rabbit gastric mucosa].

Purified fractions of the rabbit gastric mucosa and liver mitochondria were isolated. Electrone microscopy and functional studies of mitochondria showed the most intact mitochondria of gastric mucosa to be localized in gradient fractions of p=1.16-1.18, and those of the liver in fractions with p=1.19-1.20. The gastric mitochondria differed from the liver mitochondria by specific localization in oxyntic cells, abundance of crists, small matrix volume, presence of high respiratory control at lesser values of pH, high respiratory activity, great amount of cytochromes of electron transport chain in inner mitochondria membrane, two-fold excess of cytochroma a in relation to b and c, absence of b5 and by presence of great amount of phosphathydilaethanolamine and unsaturated fatty acids.

[The effect of administration of beta-carotene in an oil solution on its blood serum level and antioxidant status of patients with duodenal ulcer and erosive gastritis].

Adequately good consumption of beta-carotene was observed in patients with duodenal ulcer and erosive gastritis after daily treatment with 18 mg of the carotinoid used as 0.1% oil solution: concentration of beta-carotene was increased approximately 3-fold in blood serum of these patients. Concentration of retinol was not increased in blood serum after treatment with beta-carotene, thus indicating that the drug treatment was not dangerous. Treatment with beta-carotene led to improvement in the state of the antioxidative system of these patients as resistance of erythrocytes to peroxide hydrolysis was increased while content of malonic dialdehyde was decreased in blood serum. The carotene treatment contributed to arresting pain syndrome in patients with ulcers, to cicatrization of ulcers and to disappearance of gastric mucosal membrane erosion.

[Xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes in rat liver and small intestinal mucosa with varying combinations of polyunsaturated omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in the diet].

Male Wistar rats were fed for 30 days semi-synthetic diets containing lard, corn oil or fish oil (ichthynic oil from herring muscles), differing in total content of saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), in the ratio omega 6/omega 3 PUFA and in content of vitamin E. The activity of xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes was similar in liver of rats fed diets with lard or corn oil, while activities of epoxide hydrolase and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase were significantly higher if fish oil was used. The type of fat affected also the benzyl-produced induction of the enzymes. Differences in the enzyme activities observed did not depend on content of vitamin E in dietary fats. Unlike liver tissue, activities of microsomal enzymes were not considerably altered in rat small intestine in various experimental groups. The microsomal lipids of liver tissue and small intestine mucosal membrane were similar in the total content of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in various animal groups but the level of omega 6 and omega 3 PUFA in the tissues depended on the ratio omega 6/omega 3 PUFA in diets.

[The characteristics of lipid ligand binding by serum albumin in athletes].

The ability of serum albumin to bind lipids, fatty acids and products of their peroxidation was studied in well trained sportsmen during a competitive period. Detected quantitative and qualitative alterations point to a protein involvement in metabolic changes in an adaptation to work loads.

[Lipid peroxidation upon the use of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the treatment of hypertension and ischemic heart disease].

Anti-atherosclerotic diet containing 10 or 20 g of ichthyenic oil, used for treatment of 29 patients with cardiovascular diseases, caused an increase in content of polyunsaturated omega 3 fatty acids species in the patients erythrocyte membranes; this pattern may be used as a sensitive criterion of evaluation of the diet fatty component effect. Despite an increase of oxidation potential substrates in tissues, elevation of malonyl dialdehyde in blood plasma and hemolysis of erythrocytes in presence of H2O2 were not observed. This suggests absence of lipid peroxidation induction in adequate consumption of antioxidants.

[The effect of diets containing omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on biochemical indicators and the fatty acid composition of the cell membranes in patients with ischemic heart disease and hereditary hyperlipidemia].

A decrease in content of total cholesterol, triglycerides, fibrinogen, and atherogeneity index as well as increase in fibrinolytic activity and prolongation of the hemorrhage time were observed in blood serum of 20 patients with ischemic heart disease and hyperlipidemia of the IIa and IIb types maintained on anti-atherosclerotic diet containing 20 g of ichthyenic oil within 4 weeks. Relative content of polyunsaturated fatty acids omega 6 was decreased while the content of omega 3 fatty acids was distinctly increased in erythrocytes and blood platelets membranes, thus demonstrating the high efficiency of ichthyenic oil.

[Effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the ration on the structure of peripheral lymphoid organs, immunological parameters and nonspecific resistance of rats].

It has been established that the fatty component of the ration, with the rest ingredients being unchanged, alters the immunologic status of the body. When fatty portion of the ration was substituted for sunflower oil (omega 6) active macrophage-plasmocytic reaction in the lymphoid organs, elevation of the humoral immunity parameters and suppression of the T-cell system were recorded. The reaction to immunization was less pronounced when equal ratios of sunflower and ichtyenic oils were used. When the fatty component of the ration was completely substituted for ichtyenic oil, a decrease in T-lymphocyte number and focal necrotic changes in the lymphoid organs were observed. The fatty component of the rations used produced no significant effect on the bactericidal activity of the blood serum.

[Effect of linseed oil on fatty acid composition of low- and very low density lipoproteins, cholesterol and its fractions in the blood serum of albino rats].

The authors studied the influence of linseed oil, and mixtures of linseed and sunflower oils, in varying ratios, on the levels of cholesterol, low- and very low-density lipoproteins, high-density cholesterol, free and esterified cholesterol, and on the fatty-acid composition of low- and very low-density lipoproteins. In experiments on Wistar white rats linseed oil decreased cholesterol concentration, and the levels of low- and very low-density lipoproteins, as well as affected the fatty-acid composition of lipoproteins.
