[Contribution of the treatment of discoloured teeth].

New dental materials and their combinations increase the aesthetic and functional quality of treatment. A great improvement in the aesthetic treatment of discoloured teeth is the use of dental ceramic combined with composites.

[Antimicrobial action of a repin bandage in periodontology].

The paper deals with the antimicrobial activity of repin bandages used commonly in periodontology. The main criterium for evaluation was the number of bacteria in the wound beneath the bandage, ass ossessed by cultivation. The authors compared three types of bandages (Repin with Traumacel, Repin with Framykoin and Repin alone). Repin with Framykoin reduced most effectively the number of micro-organisms for the longest period of time. The results revealed that the amount of bacteriabacteria beneath the bandage is proportional to the period of time for which the bandage is left in the oral cavity. The optimal period is five days.

[Evaluation of work capacity in Menière's disease].

The authors submit their experience with assessment of work capacity in Ménière's disease. They mention in particular work incapacity, detection of simulation and aggravation and discuss also the enlistment of work of these patients. They pay special attention to patients who drive cars. There is a different approach to amateur and professional drivers. Special attention is also devoted to the problem of granting full or partial invalid pensions. Their experience is based on a group of 300 of their own patients with Ménière's disease.

[Treatment of tinnitus with gentamicin].

Tinnitus is a very serious problem in otolaryngology. The authors used for torpid cases the intratympanic administration of Gentamicin sulphate, administered twice a day. Nine patients with Ménière's disease were treated. The results were very favourable, deterioration of hearing did not occur and the tinnitus disappeared or improved markedly.

Laser fluorimetry for capillary column liquid chromatography: high-sensitivity detection of derivatized biological compounds.

A high-sensitivity, low-dead-volume laser-induced fluorescence detector has been designed for use in capillary column liquid chromatography. This detector exhibits femtogram detection limits and a linear dynamic range spanning five orders of magnitude. Derivatization schemes were utilized to add a fluorescent moiety to biologically important compounds such that their excitation maxima corresponded well with the output wavelength of the laser. Sample chromatograms are presented for picogram amounts of standard bile acid and steroid hormone derivatives. In addition, a high-efficiency separation of picogram amounts of the solvolyzable steroid hormones from human serum is illustrated.

Studies of hyperlipidemia in drug-induced diabetic rats by high-performance liquid chromatography.

A hyperlipidemic condition is often associated with diabetes. The possibility that specific serum lipids (i.e., individual triglycerides or cholesterol esters) may be altered in the diabetic state was investigated. Serum lipids from both controls and streptozotocin- and alloxan-treated rats were separated into approximately twenty chromtographic fractions by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography; a number of individual triglycerides and cholesterol esters were identified. The methodology described allowed subtle changes in individual lipid components to be detected. Only minor variations in the cholesterol and cholesterol ester fractions were observed between the control and diabetic samples. While not uniform throughout, elevations in the triglyceride fractions occurred in the diabetics. Also, differences in triglyceride content were found to exist between the groups of streptozotocin- and alloxan-treated animals.

Alloxan

Small-volume electrochemical detector for microcolumn liquid chromatography.

A submicroliter electrochemical detector for liquid chromatography has been designed, using pressure-annealed pyrolytic graphite technology. The analytical performance of this detector was studied in connection with a reversed-phase packed microcapillary column at very low flow-rates. Although the miniaturized version of the electrochemical detector is less sensitive, a direct analysis of a number of urinary metabolites in 0.1--1.0 microliters samples is feasible.

Application of pattern recognition and feature extraction techniques to volatile constituent metabolic profiles obtained by capillary gas chromatography.

The applicability of threshold logic units, a form of nonparametric pattern recognition, to the processing of metabolic profile data obtained by high-efficiency glass capillary column gas chromatography has been investigated. The test data included profiles of the volatile constituents of urine from normal individuals and from individuals with diabetes mellitus. A feature extraction algorithm allowed for dimensionality reduction and indicated the constituents most important in the normal versus pathological distinction. With an optimum number of dimensions, a normal versus pathological prediction rate of 93.75% was achieved. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was utilized to identify important profile constituents.
