A fully automatic instrument for the determination of electrophoretic mobility of colloidal particles was applied to human platelets. A significant increase in platelet electrophoretic mobility was observed one day after a laparotomy. This suggests that a selective consumption of platelets with smaller surface negative charge may occur during postoperative hemostatic plug formation or under surgical stress. In addition, the difference in electrophoretic mobility observed between males and females suggests an effect of estrogen on platelets.
Bioglass, which has a composition of sodium carbonate, calcium carbonate, phosphorous pentoxide and silica, has been shown to bond to living bone. This ability is dependent on controlled surface reactions. Investigators with 45S5 bioglass have demonstrated that the formation of a SiO2-rich layer and a calcium phosphate film on its surface in an aqueous environment is associated with the film bonding the bioglass to bone. The objects of this research were: 1. To study SiO2 dependence on the formation of a silica-rich layer and calcium phosphate films on a bioglass surface in a simulated physiological solution, and 2. To establish a correlation between in vitro surface reactions and in vivo bonding ability. It was discovered that three types of reactions occur in a simulated physiological solution depending on bioglass composition: 1. A calcium phosphate film and SiO2-rich layer form simultaneously and the reaction rate is fast for bioglasses which have a lower content of SiO2 (approximately 46 mol% SiO2). 2. A SiO2-rich layer forms first and a calcium phosphate film develops later between the aqueous environment and the SiO2-rich layer for bioglasses whose SiO2 content is between 46--55 mol %. 3. A calcium phosphate film does not form for glasses whose SiO2 content is more than 60 mol %.

PCB levels were determined with maternal and cord blood sampled at the time of delivery. All of the twentyfour mothers selected for this experiment are residents to Tokyo Metropolitan area. Gaschromatographic patterns of PCBs in cord blood closely resembled those of mothers. The cord blood in general showed lower PCB levels on both whole and fat basis than those in the maternal blood. No correlation was noticeable on statistical basis as regards the concentrations of PCBs between the cord blood and maternal blood. Our data suggests that the passage of PCBs through the placenta follows general patterns observed in other organochlorine insecticides.

After hepatectomy, purine and pyrimidine metabolism is a key process in the synthesis of DNA and RNA and maintaining cellular energy metabolism. The purpose of this study is to evaluate changes in blood purine and pyrimidine levels after partial hepatectomy and the effect of purine and pyrimidine nucleoside solution injection on hepatic regeneration under the hypothesis that the rat after partial hepatectomy requires substrates for salvage nucleotide synthesis and changes blood nucleoside and nucleobase levels. Blood levels of nucleotides, nucleosides, and nucleobase by high-performance liquid chromatography method and liver ATP level by enzymatic analysis, and the effect of preoperative injection of nucleoside solution (OG-VI) on hepatic regeneration ratio and hepatocytes DNA synthesis, were assessed in rats after 70% partial hepatectomy. Decreased liver adenosine triphosphate and increased plasma xanthine and hypoxanthine after partial hepatectomy indicated an increase in catabolism of purine nucleotides in regenerating liver. Plasma thymidine and cytidine levels increased, then returned to the prevalue, suggesting that the thymidine and cytidine pool was enlarged. OG-VI increased labeling indices of hepatocytes at postoperative d 1 (POD) and hepatic regeneration ratio at POD 14. Blood purine nucleobase and pyrimidine nucleoside levels change after partial hepatectomy and preoperative supply of nucleoside solution is effective for increasing hepatocytes DNA synthesis and hepatic regeneration after partial hepatectomy.
