Dactylogyrids on the gills of roach in central Finland: features of infection and species composition.

Monogenean parasites were examined from the gills of 660 roach (Rutilus rutilus) in four interconnected lakes in Central Finland between February and November 1986 and in three of the same lakes between February and December 1988. One of the lakes is eutrophic and polluted due to a paper and pulp mill, one is oligotrophic and in a natural state, and the other two lakes are eutrophic. The prevalence of Dactylogyrus infection was always high. Differences between the lakes and the years were observed in the intensity of infection, which was significantly higher in the polluted lake. The intensity was also higher in older fish. Nine Dactylogyrus species were found, and of these D. crucifer and D. nanus were numerically dominant in all of the lakes studied, especially in the oligotrophic lake. In 1986 D. fallax, D. similis and D. suecicus constituted significant proportions of the fauna in the polluted lake. D. micracanthus was most common in the eutrophic lakes. In 1988 the species composition in the polluted lake was most similar to that in the eutrophic lake.

[Studies of the changes in crystalline lens transparency in rabbits with experimental cataract].

Changes of the transparency of lenses were checked by means of in vivo spectrophotometry of the eye ball and by light transmission through extracted lenses in the course of experimental early cataract in rabbits caused by naphthalen. The results of investigations show that changes of lens transparency evaluated by means of in vivo spectrophotometry of the eye appear earlier than the clinically seen opacity. It speaks for the advisability of undertaking of further studies on the possibility of utilizing this method for detection of precataractous conditions in humans.

[Studies of the changes in crystalline lens transparency in subjects at risk of developing cataract].

The aim of the survey was a comparison of transparency of the lenses examined by means of in vivo spectrophotometry of the eye in metalurgists threatened by development of cataract--with the results obtained in persons not engaged in metalurgy and selected by chance from the population. The investigations showed that the transparency of the lenses was lower in the group of the metalurgists than in the control group in spite of the fact that the ophthalmological examination did not detect any lens changes. The results of this study show that the in vivo spectrophotometry may find some employment for detection of changes in the lens which may occur in persons threatened by development of cataract.

[Diagnosis of disturbances in pre-ocular tear film].

Presented are the actual possibilities of diagnosis of the disturbances of stability of the tear fluid. In spite of the existence of quite numerous clinical and laboratory diagnostic tests it is necessary to elaborate new, simple and safe methods of examination which may be applied in the clinical practice.

[Treatment of disturbances in the stability of pre-ocular tear film].

Discussed are the methods of treatment of the disturbances of stability of the pre-ocular tear film and the compounds which are used. In spite of introduction of a considerable amount of new pharmaceutics in the last period the treatment of disturbances of this kind needs a large amount of patience as well from the side of the patient as from the ophthalmic specialist.

Experimental studies on the angiogenic activity of the detached retina.

Angiogenic activity of the retina in experimentally induced retinal detachment in cats was examined using the corneal micropocket technique and chorioallantoic membrane assay. The results of these studies indicate that the detached retina possesses higher angiogenic activity than the normal, attached retina. This suggests that disturbances in the nourishment by the choroid of outer retinal layers may play a role in the pathogenesis of ocular neovascularization.

Seasonality of two gill monogeneans from two freshwater fish from an oligotrophic lake in northeast Finland.

The seasonal occurrence of Dactylogyrus amphibothrium and Discocotyle sagittata from the gills of ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus) and whitefish (Coregonus acronius), respectively was studied in Lake Yli-Kitka, a large oligotrophic lake in Northeast Finland. The lake, located near the Arctic Circle, is ice-covered for 7-8 months of the year. The prevalence of D. amphibothrium infection was 70.7% and remained high throughout all size-classes of fish. The length distribution and developmental stages of the worms indicated two generations per year. The overwintering generation produces a summer generation which lives for only a few weeks and matures in July. Discocotyle sagittata has only one generation yearly. Its worms mature and produce eggs in July-August and recruitment of the new generation starts in the autumn. The prevalence of D. sagittata infection varied between 40% (in January) and 6.7% (in September); smaller fish were more heavily infected than larger fish.

[Physiology and function of pre-ocular tear film].

Discussed are in detail the genesis and physiology of the lacrimal film and the role played by its separate layers in securing a normal functioning of the cornea, conjunctiva and the lids. Described are also the defensive mechanisms of the eye in which the lacrimal film takes also part and the role of the lids in the process of its regeneration.

Long-term observations of patients with acute retinal pigment epitheliitis.

Because of some authors presumptions that acute retinal pigment epitheliitis is not a distinct clinical entity but the early stage of other fundus diseases, the results of long-term observations of 5 patients with this disease are reported. The results of 6- to 7-year observations of these patients have shown that in none of them the fundus lesions developed into other retinal diseases. This indicates that acute retinal pigment epitheliitis is a distinct clinical entity.

[Results of trabeculectomy combined with intrascleral iridencleisis in the treatment of glaucoma].

Surgical technique and clinical results of a new antiglaucomatous operation--so called trabeculectomy connected with an intraseleral iridencleisis are presented. The lowering of the intraocular pressure after the operation was obtained in 96% of the operated patients, in 88% of them without any additional pharmacological treatment. The complications rate was comparable with those which are occuring after trabeculectomy or iridencleisis. The obtained results indicate that trabeculectomy with iridencleisis should be an effective antiglaucomatous procedure.

[New data on some parasitic invasions in fish].

The author gives a review of new literature data from the 80-ties. The following problems are considered: etiology of swim bladder inflammation in carp (SBI), development of parasites of the class Myxosporea, overgrowth of parasitic kidney disease (PKD) in salmonid fishes, details of development of Myxobolus cerebralis and Ichthyophtirius multifiliis, and the new systematics of the Diplozoidae.

[Formation and structure of lacrimal film on the ocular surface].

Formation, structure and composition of the preocular fluid and its distribution at the surface of the eye ball are discussed in detail. Mechanisms enabling the moistening of the cornea by the lacrimal fluid and formation of a stabile preocular lacrimal film are also presented.

Choroidal neovascularization in tilted disc syndrome.

In the paper the authors describe two cases of tilted disc syndrome associated with choroidal neovascularization. The presumed causes of development of this neovascularization and factors that can influence the location of neovascular membrane are discussed.
