[A new early symptom of maculopathy in juvenile diabetes?].

This report presents results of fluorescein angiography performed in 37 patients aged from five to 25 years and treated for diabetes for periods varying from two months to 17 years. Symptoms of microangiopathy were found in eight patients; in 18 others, functional disturbances of the macular pigment epithelium appeared in the form of "window defects." The authors stress the possibility of the occurrence of these initial signs of maculopathy even in the first years following onset of diabetes.

Experimental studies on the pathogenesis of retinopathy of prematurity.

The angiogenic activity of various parts of the retina in kittens with oxygen-induced retinopathy has been studied by the use of a corneal micropocket technique and chorioallantoic assay. The results indicate that in retinopathy of prematurity the most important role in the pathogenesis of fibrovascular proliferation is played by the so-called primary avascular retina, that is, that part of the retina which has not yet been vascularised during ontogenesis.

Cavernous hemangioma of the iris.

A case of cavernous hemangioma of the iris is reported which could be diagnosed without histopathological examination on the basis of clinical observations, particularly of the characteristic changes occurring in fluorescein angiography. The importance of fluorescein angiography in the differential diagnosis of angioma of the iris is stressed.

Arteriovenous communication of the iris.

A case of arteriovenous communication of the iris in the left eye of a 45-year-old man is reported. The haemodynamic changes and differential diagnosis of this kind of communication are briefly discussed.
