[Anti-malaria chemical prophylaxis in Europeans and anti-Plasmodium fluorescence antibodies].

The authors recorded clinical histories and tested serum for the presence of malaria fluorescent antibodies in 160 healthy Europeans who had been living for more than 4 weeks in West or Central Africa. Malaria or fever of unknown origin occurred in 37 of 50 subjects who were careless about taking prophylactic drugs while abroad. Out of 110 people regularly taking suppressive amino-4-quinoline therapy, 21 had presented febrile attacks but serological tests were only positive in 8 cases. Positive serological reactions at low titers were obtained in 3 subjects with no history of past infection and who had faithfully taken suppressive medications. These results confirm the value of the malaria immunofluorescence test for the detection of occult malaria in blood donors outside endemic areas, and explain the necessity to consider previous regular, irregular or absent chemoprophylaxis before interpreting the serological results of a febrile patient returning from overseas.

[The teachings of the Center for Education and Research in Tropical Medicine and Health. Analysis and pedagogic developments].

Three different types of education and teaching are offered by the Education and Research Center in Tropical Health and Medicine: To 7th and 8th year students in medicine, given morning and afternoon over a period of 13 weeks, this type of education in tropical health and medicine requests a high degree of participation from the student; it is very well structured in its objectives and program with more than 50% of directed studies and guided training. Evaluation is carried out both in and at the end of sylabuses. To male and female nurses, teaching is given morning and afternoon over a period of 5 weeks. From year to year, the increased number of participants attests the success of such a teaching. To students at the end of their University programmes, whatever they may be. This multidisciplinary education is given over a period of two years, twice a month, late in the afternoon.

[Agents of mycetomas: a bacteriological and parasitological study (author's transl)].

Microscopic agents responsible of Mycetomas are reviewed. They may be bacteria belonging to the Actinomycetalae order (Nocardia, Actinomadura, Streptomyces) or very various fungi belonging to the classes of Adelomycetes or Ascomycetes (Madurella, Leptosphaeria, Neotestudina, etc.). Though the procedures for collecting and transporting samples are the same, direct microscopic examination gives possibility to choose among the selective culture media the most appropriate ones to isolate either fungi or Actinomycetalae. Technics of identification for the most important bacterial agents are given, but fungi can be identified in only very specialized laboratories. Immunological methods may bring valuable indications for helping diagnosis or treatment supervision.
