[Titer of anti-P24 and anti-GP41 antibodies as a diagnostic parameter in patients with asymptomatic and symptomatic HIV infections].

Anti-p24 and anti-gp41 antibody titers were determined in sera from 20 asymptomatic HIV carriers and 15 AIDS patients. Anti-p24 titer was found to be significantly lower in AIDS patients than in asymptomatic HIV carriers and anti-gp41 titer was similar in both investigated groups. A correlation was found between T4/T8 lymphocyte ratio and anti-p24 antibody titer in patients with AIDS.

[Delta virus infection among drug addicts].

Altogether 240 unselected intravenous drug addicts were tested for the presence of infection with delta virus (HDV). Anti-delta were found in 16 (16%) out of 100 drug addicts tested in the years 1988-1989 and in only one drug addict (0.7%) out of 140 tested in the years 1985-1986. It seems that delta virus has been introduced to Warsaw drug community in the mid-eighties and has spread enormously since that time.

Affinity of anti-HIV antibodies in patients with asymptomatic and symptomatic HIV infection.

A novel method based on the dose-response curve of antibodies was used for the assessment of the affinity of anti-HIV antibodies in 15 males with asymptomatic or symptomatic HIV infection. The subjects were followed up for a period of 1 to 5 years. No significant correlation between antibody affinity and the clinical stage of infection was observed, however, the computed affinity values increased slightly in most of the asymptomatic HIV carriers and remained relatively constant in AIDS patients. A distinct decrease of anti-HIV affinity was observed in 2 patients with advanced AIDS.

[Application of DNA molecular hybridization for detection of hepatitis b virus in diagnosis of the infection].

The principles of new method of detection of hepatitis B virus DNA in serum and liver tissue from infected patients, the molecular hybridization test, are presented in this paper. It also contains data concerning comparison of this method with other serological markers in patients with acute of chronic viral hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatoma, or asymptomatic carriers of HBV.

[Serological markers of hepatitis b and hepatitis d among individuals with symptomatic and asymptomatic HIV infection].

Serological markers of present or past HBV infection were looked for in 69 persons infected with HIV. 40 out of them were clinically asymptomatic, while 29 showed evidence of clinically overt disease related to HIV infection. Most of them were homo- or bisexual men, prostitutes or intravenous drug abusers. Control group consisted of 247 anti-HIV negative persons with the same behavioural patterns. Serological markers compatible with present or past HBV infection were found in 18 out of 40 (45%) asymptomatic HIV carriers, in 23 out of 29 (79.3%) patients with clinically overt HIV infection, and in 82 out of 247 (33.2%) anti-HIV negative persons from the control group. Presented data show that HIV-infected clinically overt individuals have a higher prevalence of HBV markers than asymptomatic carriers of HIV or persons without anti-HIV belonging to risk groups. Therefore, HBV could be a factor influencing outcome of HIV infection.

[Beta-2 microglobulin as a non-specific marker of immunodeficiency in individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)].

Beta-2-microglobulin (beta 2m) is a polypeptide composing HLA antigens on the surface of nucleated cells. Its serum concentration is increased mainly in patients with lymphoproliferative disorders and during viral infections, and reflects probably accelerated activation and turnover of T cells. In this paper we report on abnormalities of beta 2m serum levels in HIV-infected patients. 17 asymptomatic HIV-carriers and 16 persons with clinically overt disease were examined and compared with 20 healthy controls. Patients with confirmed AIDS or ARC were found to have significantly raised beta 2m levels. We found elevated values of beta 2m in asymptomatic HIV-carriers even with normal T4/T8 lymphocytes ratio. There were statistically significant differences in mean beta 2m values between these groups and healthy individuals. beta 2m can be considered as an early, non-specific marker of HIV infection, even in the absence of clinical manifestations of AIDS.

Medulloblastomas in childhood: postsurgical evaluation with myelography and cerebrospinal fluid cytology.

Thirty-one children with medulloblastoma treated at the Children's Memorial Hospital have been evaluated with both postoperative myelography and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytological studies. Computed tomography of the spine following myelography was used in an attempt to increase sensitivity. Each study was done 30 days after radical resection of the posterior fossa tumor, and just prior to the spinal irradiation. Only 3 (9.6%) showed positive results for spinal subarachnoid seeding by both myelography and CSF cytology. In 2 of these patients, preoperative head CT showed evidence of intracranial subarachnoid seedings. The incidence of positive myelographic finding in our series is lower than reported ones, and neoplastic cells are detected in the CSF only when the myelography shows visible disease.

Vasopressin-induced changes in permeability of peritoneal mesothelium for urea "in vitro".

Vasopressin (ADH) acts in humans mainly upon renal collecting tubules. By changing their water permeability it plays a key role in regulation of renal water excretion. Acting upon vascular smooth muscle cells, it causes vasoconstriction and raised arterial blood pressure. This hormone was also proven to cause constriction of cultured mesangial cels, it causes vasoconstriction and raised arterial blood pressure. This urea (Seldin, Giebisch 1985), to release the natriuretic hormone as well as to stimulate hepatic glycogenolysis (Abramov et al. 1987). The influence of vasopressin upon peritoneal transport of solutes was studied, too. ADH influenced the passage of phosphate and rubidium through the isolated rabbit mesentery (Berndt, Gosselin 1961) as well as sodium flux through isolated rabbit omentum (Shear et al. 1966). It caused the drop in urea dialysance in dogs subjected to peritoneal dialysis (Henderson et al. 1971). The subject of our study was the assessment of the action of the antidiuretic hormone under "in vitro" conditions upon the peritoneal transfer of urea, the solute present in human body fluids and removable by peritoneal dialysis.

Introduction of hepatitis delta virus into Polish drug community.

The prevalence of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection was studied in 140 unselected intravenous drug addicts whose sera were drawn between 1985 and 1986 and in 100 addicts from whom sera were obtained between 1988 and 1989. It was observed that 1.8% of those positive for hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers from the earlier period and 23.2% of those from the later period had detectable anti-delta antibodies. Among drug addicts referred with acute or chronic HBV infection, the first evidence of HDV infection was found in 1986. We conclude that HDV infection was introduced into the Warsaw drug community in the mid 1980s.

Hepatitis G virus coinfection in chronic hepatitis B and C patients in Poland.

This study evaluated the epidemiology and impact of hepatitis G virus (HGV) infection in patients with chronic hepatitis B and C. Serum samples were obtained from 128 consecutive untreated patients with chronic hepatitis B (72 cases) or C (56 cases). The presence of HGV RNA was determined by PCR amplification of the 5'untranslated region; the sensitivity of the assays was ten template copy equivalents. The prevalence of HGV RNA in hepatitis B and C was found to be 25% and 34%, respectively. HGV-positive and HGV-negative patients did not differ with respect to risk factors for infection, age, sex, or alanine aminotransferase activity. Similarly, there was no difference in the severity of liver disease, as assessed with HAI score. In conclusion, we found a very high prevalence of HGV infection in chronic hepatitis B and C patients in Poland. Nevertheless, no evidence was found that HGV coinfection has any impact on the severity of the underlying disease.

[Prevalence of HIV antigens in cerebrospinal fluid and in serum of patients with both asymptomatic and symptomatic HIV infection].

Prevalence of HIV-Ag in both serum and CSF has been determined in 19 HIV infected patients, including 7 patients without any symptoms or only generalized lymphadenopathy, 5 patients with ARC and 7 patients with AIDS. The results have been correlated with clinically evident neurological disorders. HIV-Ag have been detected in 9 out of 12 patients with ARC (AIDS Related Complex) and AIDS. In 8 of them neurological disorders have been present. Out of the remaining 7 patients in only one HIV-Ag has been detected in CSF (p < 025). No correlation between the presence of HIV antigen in CSF and serum has been noted.

[Quantitative assay of CD8+ (cytotoxic and suppressor) lymphocytes in patients with both asymptomatic and symptomatic HIV infection].

Lymphocytes CD8+ have been assayed prospectively in 245 individuals infected with HIV. Percentage and number of CD8+ have been nearly two-fold higher in asymptomatic patients or patients with lymphadenopathy than those in the control group. The number of CD8+ lymphocytes has been rapidly decreasing parallel to the progression of HIV (ARC and AIDS), while their percentage has increased--however insignificantly. There has been a positive correlation between the number of CD4+ and CD8+ cells and all clinical stages of HIV infection.

[Hepatitis B among drug addicts].

In the years 1980-1988 twenty five drug addicts were identified among 1841 patients hospitalized for acute hepatitis in the Dep. of Hepatology at the Institute of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases in Warsaw. 15 drug addicts had hepatitis B and 10 had hepatitis A. It was found, that the course of acute type B hepatitis was milder in drug addicts, than among control group consisting of non-addicts.

Affinity and concentration of anti-HIV antibodies in asymptomatic and symptomatic HIV infection.

A novel method based on dose-response curve of antibodies and employing a hyperbolic function for its description was used for the assessment of the affinity and concentration of anti-HIV antibodies in eighteen anti-HIV positive males. The patients were followed up for a period of 8 months to 5 years and affinity and concentration of antibodies were measured at least twice, at the beginning and at the end of the observation period. No correlation between antibodies affinity and the clinical stage of infection was observed, however, concentration of antibodies decreased rapidly in AIDS.
