[Lymphostasis of the lower extremities following the radiation or combined treatment of malignant tumors].

The authors analysed the results of a lymphatic and phlebographic study of 76 patients with lymphostasis of the lower limbs, I-IV degree, developing at varying time after combined modality (50 patients) or radiation therapy (26 patients) of malignant tumors, mainly pelvic and peritoneal. Lymphostasis development was determined by injury to the lymphatic collectors only or their combination with injury to the major veins. Therapeutic tactics should be selected taking account of the nature to injury of the lymphatic and venous vessels, the state of the compensatory mechanisms and the degree of compensation of the lymph- and blood outflow.

[Elephantiasis of the genitalia and its treatment].

Under analysis were results of the surgical treatment of 24 patients with lymphostasis of genitalia (27 operations). The method of choice for the 1st stage of edema (lymphedema) is considered to be lympho-venous shunting. In cases with fibredema (elephantiasis) the authors prefered radical excisions of edematous tissues of genitalia.

[Secondary (radiation) edemas of the extremities].

The results of clinical examinations and treatment of 96 patients with secondary (radiation) edemas of the extremities developing in late terms after radiation therapy of malignant tumors are discussed. The edema genesis is associated both with immediate radiation damage of lymph and blood vessels (veins), and with fibrous alterations of tissues in the radiation zone.

[Late radiation injuries of the skin and underlying tissues in the treatment of oncological patients].

Based on 3594 case reports of patients, who received radiotherapy for malignant tumors 5 years or more ago, there was determined the incidence rate of different forms of late skin radiation injuries amounting to 41.5%. A considerable number of patients with late radiation injuries and the enhanced intensity of pathological changes in the irradiation zone with the lapse of time enabled raising a question on the organization of preventive therapy in the country. It is considered necessary to provide the dispensary control of all patients, subjected to radiotherapy, and to keep records of this complication.
