The detection and prevalence of reactive and physiologic sclerotic dentin, reparative dentin and dead tracts beneath various types of dental lesions according to tooth surface and age.

The pulpo-dentinal complex responds to external injuries with dentin sclerosis (DS), dead tracts (DT), or reparative dentin (RD). This investigation correlates the prevalence of these responses with age, sex, type and surface location of tooth lesions (caries, restorations, attrition, abrasion and erosion) utilizing ground sections, microradiographs and decalcified paraffin-embedded tooth sections treated with the Pollak trichrome stains (270 teeth from 113 patients). The main response to caries, restorations and erosion was DS, followed by RD and DT. DS, RD and DT occurred equally in any tooth, on any tooth surface and even beneath the same lesion. DS did not necessarily prevent RD. Root and furcation DS and RD in the floor of the pulp chamber and root canals were unrelated to particular lesions but did relate to increasing age. Root DS extended from apical to cervical area with increasing age. Beneath caries and restorations DS and RD were more prevalent in males, but DT was more prevalent in females. Pollak staining of decalcified paraffin sections for DS was approximately 80% as accurate as ground sections and microradiography. In pulp studies, where the result is contrary to previous experience, the Pollak stains reveal whether DS has decreased dentin permeability.

[Regenerative behavior of the human digestive tract under different pathologic conditions. In vitro autoradiographic study].

Tissue samples were obtained by operation on 23 patients with gastric and colonic carcinomas as well as gastric ulcers and polyps in the gastro-intestinal tract. The samples were taken from the pathological area and the "healthy" mucosa, respectively, 2 cm as the standardized distance from the respective place of finding. They were examined by means of in vitro-autoradiography with 3H-thymidine. The marking indiced obtained for benign, and malignant, tumours exceed distinctly the corrected labelled indiced of the normal mucous membrane. The marking values of the mucosa in the histologically inconspicuous vicinity of the carcinoma equal the carcinoma values. In correspondence to autoradiographic investigations by other authors and appropriate biopsy examinations in the neighbouring tumour regions, the in vitro-autoradiography is suggested to have some importance for the diagnosis of tumours.

[Primary sarcoma of the spleen].

Four cases of sarcoma of the spleen, two fibrosarcomas and two malignant haemangioendotheliomas (mHE), are described. They correspond to an frequency of 0.08% of the post-mortem material. Malignant non-Hodgkin lymphomas of the spleen have not been considered. There are distinct differences between fibrosarcomas and mHE with respect to macroscopic appearance, behavior and formation of metastases. Differential diagnostic problems in the histologic assessment of mHE are discussed.

Production, characterization and application of protein isolates from shark. Part 3. Characterization of protein isolates.

The functional and nutritional characterization of two isolates elaborated through cleaning-extraction processes, as well as that of a third isolate obtained by means of a chemical modification (alkaline heat treatment) from one of the former, was carried out. The first two isolates exhibit in general similar properties, are nutritionally comparable with casein and show a fairly high water absorption, having a potentially great value for instance in bakery and meat products and pastes. The modified isolate is essentially different from the isolate used as raw material in many of the characterized parameters, having a high nitrogen solubility index (NSI) by pH 3.5 and 7.0 and thus offering its possible use in such food systems as soft drinks where a high solubility is desired.

[Malformed child following failed termination of pregnancy].

Reported in this paper are findings recorded from a male infant who died eight days from birth, after an attempt of pregnancy termination had failed earlier. Included in these findings were malformation of the vertebral column and bony thorax as well as dorsal meningomyelocele. Intra-uterine manipulation in early pregnancy does not necessarily lead to injury of the foetus and to abortion. Hence, intra-uterine foetal damage should be ruled out by methods of prenatal diagnosis in all cases of continued pregnancy.

Miami TLSO in the management of scoliosis: preliminary results in 100 cases.

A custom fabricated polypropylene thoraco-lumbo-sacral orthosis (TLSO) for the treatment of scoliotic curves with an apical vertebrae of T7 or below is described, and the results in 100 patients treated over a 5 year period are reported. The average follow-up for all cases was 13 months, the longest being 59 months. Average initial correction in brace for thoracic curves was 36%, for thoraco-lumbar curves 56%, and for lumbar curves 63%. Double major curves averaged 38% initial correction for the upper curves and 37% for the lower curves. Twenty cases had completed brace treatment with an average follow-up of 8 months out of brace. Of the 30 curves in the 20 patients, 11 were improved more than 5 degrees, 19 remained unchanged (+5 degrees), and none had progressed more than 5 degrees. Twenty-three percent of the patients required a second orthosis and complications occurred in only two patients. The primary advantages of this TLSO include improved cosmesis, minimal discomfort, excellent provision for heat exchange, minimal confinement of the thoracic cage, and maximum retention of spinal mobility.

Endocrine parameters and alpha-tocopherol therapy of patients with mammary dysplasia.

Patients with mammary dysplasia (17 patients) and controls (6 patients) were treated in a double-blind study with alpha-tocopherol acetate (600 units/day). Determination of serum alpha-tocopherol, estradiol, estriol., and progesterone were made from blood samples collected on Day 21 of the menstrual cycle before and during therapy. Eight-eight % of patients showed clinical response to therapy. Serum alpha-tocopherol concentrations rose after therapy in patients and controls. Serum estradiol and progesterone concentration were not statistically different in patients or controls after therapy, although patients showed a trend toward increased serum progesterone concentration. However, the ratio of progesterone to estradiol, which is abnormal in mammary dysplasia patients, rose from 30 +/- 7 (S.E.) to 53 +/- 11 in patients after alpha-tocopherol therapy (p less than 0.05). Control patients showed no significant change in progesterone/estradiol ratio. Results of this study indicate that alpha-tocopherol therapy may correct an abnormal progesterone/estradiol ratio in patients with mammary dysplasia, with implications on reducing future risk for malignant breast disease.

Acquisition of susceptibility to coxsackievirus A2 by the rat L8 cell line during myogenic differentiation.

Coxsackievirus A2 was propagated to high titres in the established rat L8 myogenic cell line during the stage of differentiation characterized by fusion of myoblasts into multinucleated myotubes (192 h post-plating cultures). In contrast, pre-fusion mononucleated L8 cultured infected 24 h after plating were refractory to Coxsackievirus A2 infection, as was a non-fusing clonal variant of the L8 line (L8CL3-U) regardless of the age of the latter cultures. The development of virus susceptibility in the older L8 cultures correlated with a marked virus-specific c.p.e. as evidenced by vacuolated degenerating myotubes with disrupted cytoplasm, whereas no c.p.e. was seen following infection of the young L8 or variant L8CL3-U cultures. The restriction of Coxsackievirus A2 replication in young L8 and L8CL3-U cultures occurred after virus attachment.
